This is great. I need one of these, but I think I will borrow a few ideas from others who used a paint can as the vessel. Love the soldering iron/ pickle jar/ clear tubing used in this model, but will switch to the compressor fittings and use of a compressor to provide the pressure. The guy who suggested using incense has a good point ; that would simplify it considerably. Thanks for spurring my imagination!
@@ashtonwoods Nonsense. You can hold your hand over burning incense and determine the inadequate amount of heat to ignite anything not in direct contact with it. The incense is not IN the gas vapors, rather upstream of them. Big difference. Merely running an engine, gas vapor contact with an engine intake valve, is far far more heat exposure than that. Plus, it all needs oxygen to burn. You could stick a lit match inside and it would self extinguish.
Thank you, I just made one myself. and I found the EVAP leak- check engine code P0455 from my lexus GX460, it's not the fuel cap. it's leaking from hose
Won't this create some kind of residue permutation that regular fog and smoke machines produce differently? This could create another problem inside the hoses and evap system leaving some kind of film inside it?? Just asking.
Is it safe to use since heat from heating babyoil will come in contact with Gas Vapors in Evap system which is closed system and may cause explosion of gas filled tank ? or do we need pass this smoke tube through Ice filled container. What do you think ?
There is a trivially small amount of heat in the smoke, which is nowhere near enough to ignite anything downstream of the soldering iron tip. However, it is warm enough to degrade some plastics so you have the sacrificial hose going from the pickle jar output nipple, to the evap entry point. You would not want to put the exhaust from this on the INTAKE of a pump, if you want the pump to have long life and it has (non-thermo-) plastic or rubber components.
@@JBlooey So you think burning baby oil which is not designed to "smoke" is a better choice than to use something that was only designed to literally smoke.
You should try using glycerol - might give you denser vape and might be better than baby oil though i don't know if baby oil smells bad when it's used as vape
Regarding the smoke coming from the cord outlet, how about this brilliant idea. Cut off the plug, then slide a piece of heat shrink tubing over the cord and body of the iron where the cord exits the body. Use a hair dryer to shrink. That will give an airtight seal around the cord and seal up the hole. Then attach a new plug to the cord.
Of course it needs to touch the sock. If it only needed to be dipped in the baby oil (which is another way to design it if you had a much hotter soldering iron, but with only a lowly 40W iron it would only heat the oil and it would cool from surface area before it reached the oxidation temperature) then there would be no need for the sock. What the sock or other cloth does is put in contact with the limited heat source, a smaller steady supply of oil wicked up it, so it can get hot enough to oxidize a small amount at a time.
You need an oil reservoir that the sock sits in, just enough that you don't run out of oil. It does not need to be any particular amount, just a tiny bit more than your wicking material holds by itself, with the area of focus being how far the distance is between the oil reservoir and the heat source, and how fast that material wicks. In other words, you only need a tiny bit of material and oil. The huge amount shown and used is quite overkill by 50X, except of course that this particular design depends on the length of a soldering iron with the handle flush with the lid, so it needs a far deeper pickle jar than you'd otherwise need to produce the desired result.
Just get a pressure regulator for 7 bucks at Harbor freight.. As long as it doesn't go over 2 psi.... You can also use a fish tank aquarium pump for a 10 gallon tank takes like 2 W of energy and blows very low psi
DANGER! Cheap soldering irons like yours typically have a heat coil running house current - 120 or 240 VAC - which extends almost to its tip. If water gets in there, trouble...
?? Cheap soldering irons use a nichrome wire wrapped on a length of mica board, each portion of the length representing only a small % of the total resistance of the element, so even if you were to submerge the end in water, it would make little difference unless you added salt to the water for higher conductivity, and yet it is submerged into non-conductive oil not water, so there really isn't any danger. Try it yourself from a safe distance, rig that up, fill the jar till the tip (only) is submerged, leave it at a distance while you flip the AC circuit breaker to turn it on and back off. I suspect that the most that will happen is if a bit more current runs through the nichrome wire, it could melt to an open circuit (disconnected, no current) state further up the iron where it is not cooled by the water. Realize what the real danger is with water and electricity. It is when YOU are submerged in the water, and a high voltage, not one limited by the resistance of a heating element, finds a path through you to earth ground. Where is the path with an iron in a glass jar and you outside the jar? By all means, do avoid or at least proceed with caution working with live mains voltage if you don't understand the issue(s), but please restrain from telling others, too, if you don't understand the issues. Thank you. Now on a related note, his project might have been more effective if he had just removed the heating element from the soldering iron and ran it bare instead the jar, or perhaps use a light bulb with the globe removed instead, and work out the immersion depth to directly smoke the oil without any cloth involved, OR just avoid mains AC entirely and use use a cotton shoelace in a jar with oil as an oil lamp to produce smoke... or imagine if you will, just using a real oil lamp.
U may not want to use baby oil since it may be diluted w water, any water vapors is big no for evap system, will cause more problem, may b ok for vaccum leak which is not that sensitive to water
A lot of work for the purpose of a simple task. Go to thrift store by a steamer for clothes etc. put baby oil in it. Wala! Let’s not re invent the wheel.
I just made one of these. Got a strange look from my wife when I dumped the pickles into a bowl and went to the garage with the jar! Works great!
Arby121 haha! I have the same bowl of pickles in my fridge !
Arby121 🤣🤣🤣the people in the dollar store thought i liked pickles i grab a few back ups i definetly will break at least one
Lmfao
Great job! It's exiting to see people getting use out of the smoke machine I built. Cheers!
"It's a little stinky."

Do not use flammable incense stick in highly flammable Gas Vapors, may catch fire and explode the whole gas tank, do it outside the house in open.

Damn it I made one but the pen wasn’t bic, gonna have to start over again
Can you still use the socks when you're done checking for vacuum leaks?
LOL
Haha he gets so excited when he sees the smoke come out
A most brilliant build sir.well done and very helpfull indeed, steve from the uk
Superb build sir. Steve from the uk
i did one like this in 20 minutes and works amazing
Looks like a good way to start a fire!
Tele on clean and neck pickup is very relaxing
That smoke looks very "light" for me so is it easy to spot all around dark places bellow intercooler and pipes?!
I just put a pressure regulator attached to my spare tire as an air supply as long as you don't go over 1.5 psi you're fine
does it have to be baby oil or can I use vegetable oil?
Can you connec the soldering iron to the 12v battery in your car?
Get a $15 inverter from Walmart that's 120 W you can connect it to your battery
At the rate that is producing smoke, the air flow would clear out the jar in no time.
Thank you, I just made one myself. and I found the EVAP leak- check engine code P0455 from my lexus GX460, it's not the fuel cap. it's leaking from hose
That’s awesome 👏

What is the safest way to store this when not in use? Especially since the rags are soaked in oil.
Unplug the iron and store as is

How much air pressure can a glass jar handle? Anyone know?
More than you need to put through your emissions system.
You can also use coal for smoke with bits of paper and get rid of the soldering iron and make it portable
What is the heat resistant of the pickle jar before it explodes?
YOU ARE AMAZING!!!! GOOD JOB😁
That is pretty cool.
Would a 12 vol5 power from battery work with the oil.
Just use an incense in the jar. works like a charm, smells good and no batteries, socks or bike pump required.
Are you sure it's a good idea to use incense? I can't imagine that kind of smoke being healthy for your EVAP system.

Wow! Theres enough smoke to fill a Disco tech.
Get a cheap aquarium pump for a 10 gallon tank... You can find one for 4.99 Safe to use in evap systems because it's very low pressure
does this actually work? is it enough power for fuel line stuff too? also do you use baby oil too?
I made one like that and the smoke comes up through the solder gun around the wires.
let the iron heat up and youll get much whiter smoke, pressure shouls only be like 2 psi.
Brilliant!
Wouldn't the air pressure coming from the bike pump damage the evap system?
No it works the same way the professional machines shops use except most of them use air compressors, or they are electric with built in air pumps.
Just get a pressure regulator for 7 bucks at Harbor freight.. As long as it doesn't go over 2 psi.... You can also use a fish tank aquarium pump for a 10 gallon tank takes like 2 W of energy and blows very low psi
Smoke can come out the wire end of the soldering iron. Need to block the bore of the pin holder w/ foil.
Weaknesses in the smoke
Put some oil at least one inch the you will be good

I made a smoking machine with my vape
what size vinyl tube?
if you click on the link in my description the guy that originally made one has a detailed list.
@@alfredlyon27 Not true. He just lists soldering iron, bike pump, and mineral oil in his description. Please state the size of the vinyl tubing.
Brian Kennedy I did what he said to do. Take the pen cap to the hardware store and find a tubing that fits. It’s under a 1/2” OD and over 3/8” ID
