Are you working on landing more sax gigs? Don’t get me wrong, I want to take the most ripping solos anytime I get the chance to. But, there’s so much more to developing a career on the saxophone than just being the best soloist on stage. In school, there was always so much emphasis on jazz scales, jazz harmony, what is the hardest jazz song to play, etc. And I wish there was a little more emphasis on career development for students. So I’ve put together 10 tips for success to help up-and-coming musicians in today’s world get their feet off the ground. They’re just a few things I’ve noticed over the years working as a professional saxophonist in NYC, and I hope they help!!

Good information. I think we spend much of our time emulating performers who make it all seem effortless - though we don't see the time they put in to get there. We're also conditioned to compare ourselves to other players, or our musical heroes, so we don't always believe people when they compliment us. As you advised, just say, "Thank you."

Man, thanks for the comment! I feel like it takes much more than just getting good at your horn... But that of course has to be there as well.

@@PaultheJones Yes, takes more than talent and ability. Self-promotion and simple social skills come in handy. Good to be close to places where there are many opportunities to sit in or you really need to be good at making your own opportunities. Sometimes a thick skin comes in handy along with the ability to take constructive criticism.
