De danseres die op dit moment in Nederland rondtoert voor het Nationaal Ballet, vertelt in dit boek haar levensverhaal.
Michaela DePrince werd geboren in Sierra Leone en verloor haar ouders tijdens de burgeroorlog. Ze werd opgenomen in een weeshuis. Door een huidziekte werd DePrince beschouwd als een duivelskind en kreeg ze te maken met verwaarlozing en mishandeling.
Op vierjarige leeftijd werd ze geadopteerd door een Amerikaans echtpaar. DePrince ging op balletles en bleek een natuurtalent te zijn.
DePrince: ‘Toen ik nog maar net geadopteerd was, vertelde ik mijn adoptiemoeder het verhaal van mijn ervaringen in Sierra Leone. Ik wist toen nog niet dat deze biografie het eindresultaat van dat verhaal zou zijn. Deze schrijfervaring heeft me in staat gesteld om mijn verleden opnieuw te beleven, om te gaan met mijn huidige leven, en om doelen te blijven stellen voor mijn toekomst.
