    Only thing I would add is don't try to hit a 9 O'clock swing a specific distance. Choke up and make a comfortable half swing with your arm parallel to the ground and still be a little aggressive and stable through the ball. Then see how far it goes. I use a shag bag and hit 30 or 40 balls with the same swing, then pace it off to where the balls were landing so you have a solid swing and carry distance in your mind. My yardage is 65 yards. 9 O'clock 60 wedge. 54 degree is a little over 80. 48 degree is 105. All the same swing with 3 clubs. Then make your back swing slightly bigger or shorter to take a little off or add a bit. Then work on 730 and 1030 swings to make 3 swings and 9 yardages with 3 different clubs. Don't force the yardages. Your swing will determine the distances and you'll be super confident hitting it the right yardage because you've done it so many times. I lay up to 65 when I can!

    Thanks Paul. I used my 54 degree SW in this video as I find that the extra bounce (12) helps me to shallow out the divot and gain extra control. But when the distance needs it I'd have no problem doing the same with my PW & LW. So we actually end up with 3 x 3, 3 wedges giving 3 landing distances per club, 9 distances total. Write these average distances out on a hard copy and check them regularly, thanks, Mark.

      Thanks for your positive input Logan. When doing you tube videos I am mindful that the content will be viewed by golfers of all ages and abilities, so I plan my video content accordingly as to alienate the least number of viewers possible. Even so I do still manage to attract my fair share of keyboard warriors. I am well versed in more advanced methods and factors that could be considered when playing a low flighted pitch shot such as launch angle, spin rates and D plane, but these may well be lost on most people.

    • @getgolfingmarkheinemannpga7161
      @getgolfingmarkheinemannpga7161  4 роки тому

      Thanks Robert. For me wrist action in a pitch shot shouldn't be a conscious action. If your grip pressure is light enough then the wrist will hinge automatically. My grip pressure would be around 4/10. I'd typically use a little more wrist if the lie was poor in order to steepen the angle of attack. But under normal circumstances I'm looking for a broad base to the swing and a shallow attack angle.

    Very nice, patient, respectful presentation Mark. Thanks. And if you want less spin and/or more height on a shot of this length?

    • @getgolfingmarkheinemannpga7161
      @getgolfingmarkheinemannpga7161  5 років тому

      Thanks Dan. When the shot requires a little less spin to maybe release up the green then I'd usually use less loft and a slower paced, longer / less aggressive swing.
      For more height without changing club then I'd look to release my right hand a little earlier towards impact. Other instructors may suggest moving the ball position forward but I find that can cause the strike to be a little too inconsistent, so the less things we change the better. Thanks, Mark.

    One thing is perfectly clear--each "expert" will tell us the exact way to hit this shot any none will tell us the same thing. The truth is that there are many different ways to make this shot. One will say "ball forward" and another will say "ball back." One will say "club face open" and another will say "club face closed." What they all fail to explain is how to find the way to hit this shot that works for you.

      Mickelson does not advocate putting the ball in the center. He says to place it forward of center for a high trajectory and back of center for a lower trajectory.
      Most teachers advocate a center position for simplicity reasons since most of their students are not tour players who like to control trajectory.
      No teacher worth his weight in salt would ever advocate a "closed" clubface for these shots. That totally negates the purpose of that huge margin of error called the ":bounce". Bounce allows you to hit as much as 2 inches behind the ball and still hit an acceptable shot. Hit 1/2 inch behind the ball with the clubface closed and the divot goes further than the ball. We have all been there and done that.

      Here in the American South, bent is giving way to one of the several new ultradwarf Bermuda varieties. They are much more heat tolerant and require a fraction of the water we have to put on bent. They roll very well, although I would never say anything is better than bent. But these new hybrid Bermuda varieties are the way to go in my part of the world.

    • @getgolfingmarkheinemannpga7161

      Hi Monteque, As a pitch shot is not a power shot there is no great need to shift your weight. So to ensure that the low point of your swing is striking the ground in the same place every time keep your weight slightly on your left foot throughout the shot so that your sternum stays in position.No shift = consistent strike. I notice using that grip for these shots, I struggle with distance control especially under 50 yards and tend to pull it as well. The weaker grip help solve the 35 yarders but was advise to maintain the same grip throughout each shot. The 40 yds and under get me as I just cant dial down the swing tempo. @getgolfingmarkheinemannpga7161  5 років тому +2

      Thanks Leo. For consistency throughout the bag I'd advise making the least amount of changes the better. Naturally a strong grip would usually have the effect of closing the clubface resulting in shots going left and a little longer than normal. For the shorter distance pitch shots especially I would recommend that you -1 - Maintain your normal grip, but choke down the handle.2 - Narrow your stance.3 - Maintain connection of the arms (triceps) and ribs so that you can control the shot distance with the amount of body turn.Thanks, Mark

      Thanks Peter.

      Hi 40yearoldgolfer, it sounds like you have a little bit of a flip at the low point of your swing. This is likely to be something that you do on all shots by the sounds of things. Remember to stand with an open toe line and keep turning your hips through impact to ensure that the arms don't out race the body. If the body stalls (hips get too square at impact) then you'll flip it with the wrists, working your bottom hand underneath too much.

    Nice and easy to follow instruction. Just one question, why open the toe line? I was thinking, that in this case, it is to encourage a more outside-in approach which adds backspin. Stunning golf course, by the way.

      Thanks Denis. By opening just the toe line it allows me to clear my lower body easier so that I don't flip the club and close the club face. I want the shoulders / chest to remain parallel to the target line otherwise the club path would get out to in, which isn't ideal. For the low flighted pitch shot we're actually looking for a slight in to out club path. Thank, Mark

    This is somewhat confusing? If the back edge (bounce) hits the ground first it literally bounces the front edge off the ground and skulls the ball. The front edge must make crisp ball contact the club then utilizes bounce to slide under as the ball is well on its way. At least for me this works better than a bounce first pass at the ball.

    I also think that the even, soft grass surfaces many of these lessons show are not what your usual public course players play on. I struggle to get that smooth bounce on lots of courses I play. Hard pan causes a ‚bounce‘ and topping the ball. Give us a lesson from a hard pan if you really want to improve the average players game.

      Thanks for your comments Brian. I'm not sure where exactly you are located but Co Kerry South West Ireland here happens to be one of the wettest places on the planet so trying to find hard pan is not easy. Methods of replicating hard pan that I have used successfully in the past have been hitting of a wooden plank, a concrete road and the actual putting green emphasising with each one the need for a very shallow angle of attack but with a square clubface to minimise the bounce.

    I wish you would watch your self in terms of the clock. With each pitch, you swing 1-2 hours further on your follow through than on the take away. But if someone new to pitching technique follows your word for word directions, they will struggle because they will have to decelerate to have even backswings and follow throughs. Why not say, 9 o'clock to 1 o'clock? or 9 o'clock stored energy and then release all the energy in the follow through. An 8 o'clock backswing and release in the the follow through. Naturally, in each case, the release will be different, but you won't be asking students to do something that is counterproductive.

      I love these shots. I usually take a divot tho unless on nice hard fairway. I also chopped my 60 down to a 12 year old length. Best way to get good at these (for me at least) is go to a practice hole on a course and hit ur most comfortable half swing or whatever you call it that shows the ball landing on the green a lot in the same spot, doesn’t matter where. Get the yardage, and would you look at that, You found ur 45 yard shot. Then go a bit harder same shot, that’s ur 60 yard shot. Then full swing, 75 yard shot. Lol. Idk it worked for Me. Then 56 degree same deal blah blah. For some odd reason tho cutting down my wedges significantly improved accuracy for me. I could still smack a 60 degree 85 -90 need being but not needed.

      Id say his distance really wont help anyone in particular. You have to go out and see what "your" distances are at different swing lengths. Practice and take note of each and when you get out on a course, you will already know what shot you will need at a particular distance. Thats why we always see guys pacing off the shot beforehand.
      .( But please dont do that if you have no clue to what you are doing! It just po's the group waiting behind you when they see the shot skulled over the green.LOL)
