    I love this sound!! I remember that like the yesterday being in the student change in Finland at early of 90's. The father of the host family started 142H in the freezing Sunday evening. It was something -20 degrees and the sound of the engine was like the hammers hitting metal :) GREAT video, thanks!

    People, it has been mentioned earlier; Scania trucks do not have glow plugs. Neither does any other truck have any glowplugs. It's direct injection doesn't need them. The fuel burns intaniously when it's being injected. The very high pressure in the cilinder causes the air to heat up so the diesel ignites as soon as it reaces the air in the cilinder.
    This truck probably had an empty fuel tank.

    I can't believe people are worried about how much this thing pollutes.
    It's a Racing Truck!
    There's so few of those around, that they hardly make any environmental impact .. at all!
    Race cars / trucks will never be really green.
    A-to-B cars and ordinary delivery trucks/vans on the other hand, is where ecology should be aimed at.

    robby844, if you read the video titled "Scania V8 first start after winter "
    it means that the engine haven't been started all winter long, and it does not have glow plugs to preheat the cylinders before starting, it will smoke like that till it warms up, then it will stop smoking, i know that, cuz i have a diesel box van i drive for the company, and if i let it sit a long time in the cold without plugging in the blockheater, it will smoke like that till it warms up.

    A truck does not have any systems like all modern cars to get rid of the air in a fuel line when the tanks ran empty. After refueling you will need to pump the diesel manually with a pump mounted on the engine and untighten bolts (1 after another and not both together) so the air can escape the fuel line.

    @mrsexypizzaria its a diesel. it runs on high compression. compresson makes heat and enough to ignite diesel fuel. gasoline engines have about 120 psi avarage and diesels have about 500 psi

  • @vector6977
    @vector6977 14 років тому

    @mrsexypizzaria Diesel engine use glowplugs. Similar in size etc to a sparkplug but they use electric current to heat up red hot so they can ignite the fuel. After starting, a diesel uses heat an compression to fire the fuel.

    but, there are diesel engines with direct injection and come with glow plugs.. glow plugs heat up to help with fuel vaporization.. u need them in cold climates.. for easy starts.. i know they are mainly used on medium diesels.. not so in heavy trucks.. i will double check on that

    Starting Fluid is a STARTING AID for gasoline and diesel engine,
    diesel engines have 2 rules:
    1. you can use starting fluid in diesel engine that does not have glow plugs.
    2. you CANNOT use the starting fluid in diesel engine that has GLOW PLUGS.
    using a staring fluid in diesel engine with glow plugs when the intake valve opens up while the plug is glowing, and the pistion draws air WITH starting fluid and the glow plug ignites the fluid can result in an explosion. i know cuz i saw it happen

  • @skakamj0lk

    @djdjerojr Sorry, but the only reason they limit torque in the lower gears is to preserve the drive train, it simply can't handle the power.
    It's true though that the trucks are limited to 90 km/h to reduce emissions, but it also significantly improves safety. I never break the speed limit of 80 km/h (for trucks) here in Norway, even on the best of roads (horrible compared to other countries) and even if we have a limiter on 89 km/h, it's fast enough for 50 tonnes if you ask me...

  • @Righty736

    Done that in a truck before. But it was a freightliner with straightpipes.

  • @smirnofowner

    The smoke is unburned diesel, oil in the bore is not necesery. once its warmed up it will run OK

  • @mitsucanter247365
    @mitsucanter247365 15 років тому

    The smoke will be down to the oil which has weeped into the bores over the time its been stood still, the poor starting is more than likely down to the air locks in the fuel lines as the fuel has bled back over time.
    Its been stood over winter, i doubt it will start firts time on the key.

    Use some CRC Aerostart that does the trick for cold tractors!

  • @3DPeter
    @3DPeter 15 років тому

    i'll bet that that truck has more than a million miles on it, and then you can expect that the pistonrings are worn, but that doesn't matter because as soon the engine is on temperature, the pistons wil expand enough to run properly and smokefree. It may use some oil each 1000 miles or so, but this way it could do easely another couple of hundred thousant miles before the rest of the truck falls apart.

    every diesel engine which i know has glow plugs (at least car engines). direct injection engines like my 1.9jtd (turbocharged, common-rail engine) engine have them too. but my engine starts also at -5°C without glowing ;) a modern engine normally dont need the glow plugs above 5°C. but if needed they heat up very quickly so at most you can normally start like a gas engine.
    sry for my bad english ;)

    sorry for my bad english but glow plugs has every diesel in the whole planet...my dad's volvo f89 then F12 then FH12 after that we had a MAN...even JCB have glow plugs...new common rail engines need glow plugs cuz at cold they suck at starting up in cold mornings...but with them you don't have problems

  • @fontheking5
    @fontheking5 15 років тому

    Yes , that`s the problem whit diesel engines , they lose compression when they get older and can take forever to start if that happens . But Diesel engines use to be very hard to start if they sit for a long long time . That`s true .

  • @Cjaiceman
    @Cjaiceman 17 років тому

    Your not supposed to use ANY starting fluid on these types of diesel because it can damage the engine. I've seen it happen, it wasn't pretty.
    haydenelder - You have to keep them going, only doing 4-5 revs won't warm them enough to get them going, thats why you have to crank them for long periods.

  • @ZackMcLeish13

    Most "real" truck engines don't have glow plugs. With the rare exception of a few old Cat truck engines, glow plugs are for "four wheelers"!
