Sally Field has said in interviews that she was very bitter when they cancelled Gidget--during the original run of the series the ratings weren't great but when it was in reruns in the summer of 1966 (after it had already been cancelled)-the show made it consistently into the top 10. However the network still wouldn't renew it (apparently they didn't want to admit they made a mistake cancelling it)--although Ms. Fields went on to do "The Flying Nun" she said she didn't enjoy working on it and felt she performed better in Gidget
Yep, "The Flying Nun" was ABC's apology show to Sally Field for cancelling "Gidget" prematurely. She only did "The Flying Nun" because her uncle convinced her if she didn't, she'd likely never work in acting again.
Life is so hard for all of us, no matter who you are. I'm grateful that I watched Gidget back in the 80's when it was reruns. Good episodes of pre beatles pre alot of stuff before 64. I know now not to take anything for granted and glad i know the show like I do. life is what it is and it goes on. Lucky is lucky for those that know. Here's to Sally. She's an amazing woman. Cheers
@@anglobostonian I believe it was her stepfather (Jock Maloney) who told her to do Gidget or potentially she would fail in show business. Ms. Field has said that Maloney also sexually abused her growing up
@@bufnyfan1 and by "Gidget" you mean "The Flying Nun", don't you?
@@anglobostonian that's right--meant "the Flying Nun"
I was very upset that I didn't grow up to be Gidget :)
+Cindy D'Adamo Here is the story of the real Gidget. Her screenwriter father wrote the story.

She is very small. And so they nicknamed her Gidget for "girl midget".

you don't grow up to be Gidget!!! Gidget didn't grow up! She's girl/midget= Gidget. That's how she got the name!!!! Lol
Me too. And I'm a dude. Lol.
There is still time.
My cats name is Gidget. I too wanted to be Gidget. I came from a surfing family, but I got the name Lulu instead..
I used to love watching this show when I was a little girl :)
Love this great big-band chart of a TV theme. When I began taking voice lessons, I told my teacher I wanted to sing like this guy (Johnny Tillotson). He said that shouldn't be a problem. 🙂
Just hearing that voice makes this 54 year old girl........SWOOOOOOON!
Gidget is so beautiful. I lover her.
Always liked the song
Sally Field ❤
This show was soooo sweet!
1 season of bliss
Fun show and a swingin' theme. Very '60s.
i love this song.i wash it every saturday.i sing along to it.
The singer is Johnny Tillotson according to Wikipedia.
Loved this dvd set
The ending credits though remind me of the guy who did the music on The Muppet Show, and the electric guitar sounds like the guy who did the music for the DFE Pink Panther short cartoons.
Wow!!! This one really brings back the memories...
I love the theme to Gidget!
Yesterday on decades network they did an all fay marathon of The flying nun and now today for sure, decades network will be doing an all day marathon of gidget, which by the way is awesome and i'll be watching that. Sally Field has done an excellent job with her character both tv shows and she also did an outstanding job with her character as Aunt May when it came to the Spider-Man movies as well.
Howard Greenfield Lyrics! Love it!
Was he with the "Brill Building" group?
Yes! , he wrote " Passing Time for the Cookies " and of course , many of the Neil Sedaka hits as well!
In the unaired version of the pilot, the theme was sung by The Four Freshmen. The closing credits version of the theme [:48] was used in the unaired pilot as well (and slightly longer).
@Concha Robles aww me too!! Watching Gidget and The Flying Nun on Antenna Tv is the best part of my weekend. And I gotta point out that I'm SO proud out kiss Gidget, Sally field, is up for an Oscar this year. :)!!!
😊great 🎤
Don Porter. ❤
The song sounds like something Henry Mancini would have done, in a way it has that sort of British sound to it.
It was written by Jack Keller and Howard Greenfield who worked for Screengems after they bought the Aldon music publishing company. Keller also wrote the theme to Bewitched, and is listed as producer on the Monkees theme. Just reading about it now.

Sounds very American to me (and Mancini was American).
Well when I usually say Henry Mancini I think about his wonderful music from The Great Mouse Detective also I think of Joe Raposo from his music from Dr. Seuss and Muppet Caper film
Bears a striking resemblance to "My Kind of Girl" by Leslie Bricusse (a big hit for Matt Monro).
I see Leslie Bricusse being part of it since his music does have that Joe Raposo sound and British sound to it too.
How about that weird little early 60s blues rock guitar lick they threw in at the end there? Was that supposed to be a nod to the youth of that time? Like “Don’t mind the Sinatra vibe kids. That’s for mom and dad. This program is really just like Beach Blanket Bingo! Aw, come on. Have a watch. It’ll be swell!“
Hey this sounds like Johnny Tillotson singing
This doesn't sound like the singer's voice I remember. What I remember is a great voice, a little deeper and with no breathiness.
+goolash Nope, this is the original singer: Johnny Tillotson.
really pretty profile picture..thanks for sharing goolash
Thank you - want to chat?
Hi, can you tell me who I must have heard? That is the version I want to hear now. Thanks
Maybe you're thinking of James Darren? [by far the better voice]. Go to the Gidget movies.
Charming acress, cute tv show. My only reservation with it, and
with this period of television generally, is that it presented this
as "normal" and if your life didn't measure up to it, then there
was something the matter with you.
But we all knew better, didn't we?
Lol what??
*"Wait'll you fuk my Gidget..."*
If you're in doubt about angels being real.
I can arrange to change any doubts you feel.
Wait'll you see my Gidget!
You'll want her for your Valentine.
You're gonna say she's all that you adore
But stay away, Gidet is spoken for
You're gonna find that Gidget is mine!
James Darren from TJ Hooker for the ULTIMATE WIN!!!!
Certainly, some game show commemorates gidget; I only wonder which it could be.
Why can't they make wholesome & entertaining televison shows like this anymore? Unless the young female character is consistently fantasizing about sex, fighting for "womyn's rights" or bashing a guy(s) her character just wont sell nor appeal to the morally crass temperment of most teenagers today! What a shame!
@Aunicornjenn Johnny Tillotson
I really don't remember if we ever watched this show when it was on. We may have been watching "The Beverly Hillbillies" as we weren't big on "The Virginian". In any case, it is a cute 60s style family show that just didn't get an audience.
.....even tho it was a high quality program!!.....
It sounds like Frankie Avalon
James Darren?
@@michaelmcpherrin4696 Johnny Tillotson, according to another comment above.
Did Sinatra ever cover this one?
Who is the singer? This was one of the first shows I watched as a young boy.
johnny tillotson
