    I agree, thanks for taking the time to make this and provide very interesting insights into an area my wife and I have been looking into. Would love to see more.

    My oldest brother moved to Stonington in the late 60’s early 70’s from Aroostook county to teach school. Married a local girl . Spent a lot of time there. A beautiful place.

    My hometown is the best place in the whole world. The most natural and beautiful place. Wish I could afford to live there. They say they want young Maine kids to get an education and stay in Maine, I do! Just too many seasonal rentals to afford anything rent or buy. I grew up since 10 working in the tourism industry really puts a sour taste in your mouth for people who get to actually enjoy our good season and not break our backs every summer. I want to raise my family there with my whole heart. From a many generation lobstering and fishing family work at a Southern Maine nonprofit working on bridging the gap between environmental science and the fishing community to move forward together and maintain our working waterfront and sustain small fishing communities like the one I love so much. The accent alone is worth it, stay for the idioms.

    Excellent documentary. It’s a beautiful area that I’ve visited several times. I was aware in general of the challenges faced by the local community and economy. It was good to hear their stories firsthand.

      Westbrook has gone to shit lol. Built a huge eye sore that nobody wanted. All the city workers have brand new trucks. While they continue to raise the property taxes every year.

    housing is a big problem in many many many many towns. too many houses are bought to become rented. They dont want you to own. they what you to pay and have nothing.

    guy on vinalhaven says the same thing that "they" ultimately want them to stop fishing. He says then if thats the case, there should be a buy-out program to relinquish the license.

    The housing crisis in downeast Maine creates barriers for new entrants/new family formation that are so significant that these communities simply cannot grow and are on trajectories of steep full time population decline. Look at school enrollments in nearly any of these communities to see clear evidence that these places are on trajectories to be unviable in terms of being functional places for year round residents to live.

    Sea Level in the gulf of Maine used to be 120 meters lower than it is now. I think we will be ok. Living on the coast not to far from here I do worry about the fisheries. Nice film thanks

    Sounds like Stonington needs government to do less *to* them more than do more for them.

    We have so many people seeking asylum, and so many will come due to climate change, maybe move them to these dying towns, revive the towns, give the people somewhere to live and bring their skills. Win win

      The issue is the lack of housing, not people who want to live in the area.

    • @melanielane
      @melanielane 5 місяців тому

      @@jordanadams2187 there are towns, including in this video, where there are towns that people leave due to lack of opportunity. They leave behind empty houses. Empty store fronts. And residents who don’t want to leave. We have more than one problem
