Hi! My name is Will and I love learning about rural Maine.
Bombers, Tankers, and the Crown of Maine
In 1947 construction began on a Strategic Air Command Base in far northern Maine, in a town called Limestone. It helped transform the area and its impact, as well as its shadow, are still felt today.

I was stationed at Loring from 1980 - 1983. Coldest I've ever been! The most snow I have ever seen! We had a tough mission keeping all those aircraft in the air. Something I will never forget...
Trump called veteran's "suckers and losers." I wonder if Mrs. Loring would have supported MAGA?
We’re is your Maine accent
you forgot to tell them that Maine towns are all freemason run, that tan building you showed in the last clip with Boulevard graphics, i live right across the street by the way, and well that is the Freemason lodge, almost every Maine town has one, and yes even the small Limestone Lodge still operates to this day and are the real people running Limestone, they still have a meeting list mailer that goes out, with all the members and and ranks, and still meet every month, my father in law was the president of the Houlton Maine Mason lodge in the 80's and 90's, these buildings are all across the country even, all same architecture too, and look almost identical, that could be an interesting video for you to do too. i guarantee you these guys have a say on what goes on at the Loring Authority.
After basic training I put in for a base in CA since my family was there. I was sent to Loring AFB. I think they looked at my birthplace (MA) and sent me to ME thinking that would put me closer to MA. I was stationed there from 10/68-6/69and was sent to Vietnam from there. I remember how cold it was and walking to different base facilities was via tunnels. We would pack into someone’s car and go to Canada for a night out, eat pizza and dance with the girls. I left in June ‘68 there were 7’snow drifts and it was 18 below 0. Ive never been back to that area.❤
Great, if not long, video. Great seeing the area again, if only in video. Couple of points though. At around 26:15 you say that Loring had shed its nuclear capabilities in the '80's. You might want to look into that a little further. Those B-52's were on Alert until the end of Alert. And while you allude to the end of the Cold War/Soviet Union you don't seem to fully comprehend how this specifically might have impacted Loring's future. Loring had previously survived a round of base closures due to the elected officials which you mentioned. But after the demise of the Soviet Union and Alert went away because of reduction of tensions, no amount of politicking could save Loring. You might have also given a bit more discussion to the airmen and their families who pumped all that money and energy into The County. Even given my critique I think you've done a fine job.
So sad..about the same story at Wurtsmith AFB in Oscoda,Mi. They Keep trying but it will never be the same!! :(
This is such an important video. It’s a shame to see the base go to waste.
A gem! Congrats to all involved in getting this story told. Several northern Maine towns have lost their major employer - my uncle taught school in Millinocket, and that town took a hard hit when the paper company closed. Appreciate the resilience and positive attitude from those making Limestone's future!
I would give anything to live in some quiet uncrowded town in Maine
Thank you very much for this. My father was stationed here from 1969 to the early 70s. I lived there from June 1970 to January 1972. I loved this local.
What a great video. I was a crew chief on tankers at loring. 1979-1983. Makes me very sad but very proud. Winters back then were brutal. We even had an earthquake my last year there. Good thing we were young. We had no idea how tense the Cold War was during that period. Alert, live aboards, elephant walks. Constant generations and ORIs. It wasn’t easy but we were all in it together. It’s all true 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Remember back in October of 1975 when the big orange UFO hovered over Loring AFB’s Nukes and proceeded to enable and disable them. Pepperidge Farms remembers.
My hometown is the best place in the whole world. The most natural and beautiful place. Wish I could afford to live there. They say they want young Maine kids to get an education and stay in Maine, I do! Just too many seasonal rentals to afford anything rent or buy. I grew up since 10 working in the tourism industry really puts a sour taste in your mouth for people who get to actually enjoy our good season and not break our backs every summer. I want to raise my family there with my whole heart. From a many generation lobstering and fishing family work at a Southern Maine nonprofit working on bridging the gap between environmental science and the fishing community to move forward together and maintain our working waterfront and sustain small fishing communities like the one I love so much. The accent alone is worth it, stay for the idioms.
I was stationed at Loring between 1980-1983, thank you for doing g this great video about the history of the area. My wife grew up up about 5 miles from the base.
I was stationed there from May '83 thru Sep. '84. I was assigned to the 2192nd Comm Sq. I worked off base at the main comm center and antenna field. Many good memories of my short time there.
Another winner. You have a great talent!
Very well done! Thanks
my house is on here, i bike around the base a lot
Great job, Will! We love land sailing at Loring. It's one of the best places in the world to sail and race, and the people in the area make it special. See you all at the Eastern Blokart Championships and Limestone Oktoberfest at Loring on October 12.
I will say one really fun thing to do at Loring Air Force Base in the winter is go 100 miles an hour on your snowmobile on the runway
My grandpa served in the US Air Force and was stationed in Loring Air Force Base. I now live just 20 miles away.
You did a wonderful job by making this video! I lived there from 60 - 65.
And phish.
The best video I've ever seen regarding Loring AFB and Aroostook County. Very factual and comprehensive. I am impressed, Will. Keep up the great work!
@william_mcdowell awesome documentary man. I'm a fellow Mainer, and learned a lot from this.
VERY WELL DONE!!! The best produced and written I have sseen.
Maine is a state where the wealthy are taking over. Been here 25 years. Only people iv seen raise the taxes are the left. Willard beach area. $800 a year in 2010. 2024 $3k a year.
Well done Will!
Kill the music 👎👎👎👎👎💩💩😬
Best video on the County I've seen. Well done guys.
My dad was at Dow AFB in bangor in 58'
Hats off to the people of limestone for trying to resurect loring AFB. We have seen many bases abandoned over the years. As an Air Force brat, child of a military parent as we were called, and veteran myself, I lived on those bases and have a soft spot in my heart for them. My memories are all that’s left. To see one gain new strength is fantastic. Best of luck going forward.
A great video I’ve lived in Maine most of my life. I’m in my 50s yet. This was very enlightening. Like many of us I’ve never been there. The perspective and work that I can tell you put into this.
I was station there and worked in the 42 FMS in the Jet Engine shop between the Arch and the DC Hangers.
Cool video dude, did you see any un vehicles there😮
Very well done video I am from Presque isle , I have a few on my channel showing old equipment in the dc hangar. If you ever find yourself interested in the toxic side of the base I would love too. Using a Geiger counter you can see how the EPA lied about safety. The north river depot is terrible, absolutely toxic.
This was honestly one of the best produced UA-cam videos I have ever seen. I’ve never known about that town or base, but I now feel connected to it on a new level. Keep it up man!!! Can’t wait to see what you do next!
You should do one on Plattsburgh AFB. PHISH played there.
Superb production, indeed. I hope you plan an occasional follow-up to update your viewers on the former base’s development.
I'm born and raised in the County and very proud of my heritage
Will...WOW, WOW, WOW ! ! ! What a fantastic video about Loring and Limestone ! ! ! My Dad was a WWII bomber pilot and was recalled to active duty during the Korean War. He was assigned to Loring and served there from 1953 to the end of 1958, flying B-36s and B-52s with the 69th Bomb Squadron.
I have been driving up to Loring for work (from Cumberland county) for years. I was aware of the crash resulting from the decommissioning of the base, but was not fully educated on the base's beginnings. Thank you for making this video. Local history is one of those things we never seem to know about as transplants (admittedly, of which I am, but 15 years and counting). You are providing a vital service to the people of the state who have always loved it, and those of us who moved here later in life. Liked and Subscribed. I look forward to your future videos.
That place is being saved... could be operational in no time...
Wow, very well done! I am impressed. The quality of the story, the images, the narration (the tonality), the interjection of humor, surprises, the relaxed pace, conclusion. Great story telling (beginning, middle, end). And best of all, I didn't know any of this (I'm 65yrs old, Texas home). Everyone (I assume) loves to hear something they didn't know, every day, about our world. I hope you can make a good living out of this, somehow, some way.
Can't praise you enough for what a good job you did--thorough, largely accurate, pleasant to the eyes and ears. Not being from Maine, but being a specialist in US-Canada relations & trade I was curious about the town's potential role in that regard. That one economic developer touched on the subject but it was not explored further, Keep up the good work!
Parallels the story of Rome, NY & Griffiss AFB.
I love it here in Van Buren. Great video. Question: On AI I learned that Aroostook is the LARGEST county not the 2nd largest. What sayeth you.?
Aroostook is the largest by land area, but St. Louis County in Minnesota is largest by total area, which includes water area such as its lakes. So really it could go either way. Thanks for watching!
@@William_McDowell thanks. You are right; I had heard that before.
Great job!!
Many people how live in small rural towns are friendly and they are welcoming as well, that's why i love small town with very view homes they are unci to America, I hate to see them die.
