Yeah because there wasn’t some guy on set… ah no worries we’ll get it in post! Back then they had to know if it was achievable right there and then or the shot failed. I think this is why the prequels and now sequels of Star Wars sucked so bad, because there were no limits to what they could do… and sometimes obstacles and limitations force you to be at your highest level of creativity.

The original movies are almost entirely practical, and a significant amount of care was given to the productions.
Not only that, there was a consistent theme among them - the search for religious artifacts, which (while not actually possessing supernatural powers) are or were real at one time.
Crystal Skull had more CGI than the first three combined. It strayed from the theme, and had Indy chasing after a flimsy hoax. The story skipped over a significant part of the relationship between Indy and Marion that fans would've loved to see. And it was blatantly obvious that not as much care went into the finished product; it was only a cash grab off a popular but dormant franchise.

The force of impact is mitigated by the slope of the mountain. However, in this case the slope seems to be a 20 to 30 degree incline, meaning (using trigonometry and cosine) we get an impact force equivelent to about 85% to 90% of one landing on a flat surface from that height.
Even at a 45 degree incline you can expect to experience 70% of the impact.
