This just made my day. I can now deal with every idiot life throws my way, because I have Miss Lola to inspire me. Now I really wanna dress up in drag.
Do. I was in the pit for this in High School a few years back. I wore a grey fedora, a pinstripe suit, a blue skirt and blazer over it, headphones around my neck, and a pair of bright red boots with heels. I'm Male, and my school isn't exactly normal, but it was great.
...No it's not. It's a simple pop song (a good one, mind you) with some good ensemble harmonies. If you look at what Pasek and Paul, the team behind Dogfight, the lyrics of La La Land, and Dear Evan Hansen, have to say about writing for musical theater, they will mention what one of their professors in college taught them: "pop songs are like adjectives, musical theater songs are like verbs." What they mean by this is that pop songs describe something, but don't really push it forward at all. Theater songs, when written properly, should describe a specific event, character, or plot point and move it forward. This song talks about how sexy high heels are, something which was already in the script. We don't find out anything new about Lola (in the lyrics, we find out that she designs shoes due to some good staging and some dialogue, but neither of those count), and the plot doesn't really move, except for that 30 second snippet of the older guy talking about how to modify shoes to fit men. I have a test to determine whether indiviual theater songs do their job well: does it advance the plot or the characters in the lyrics. If the answer is yes, then the song justifies its existence in the show. Kinky Boots fails this test many times. I realize I kind of just bashed the show, and I want to be clear: I saw it recently and had fun there. I thought Stark Sands and ESPECIALLY Billy Porter were fantastic, the script was good, and the direction and choreography was fantastic, but the songs were just fun pop songs.
David Fathom I think the original post was talking about the how energetic and funky the overall song is and not just the lyrics... And the comment was just another one of the 'this song is the best' post you see for every single decent song on youtube, so it's safe to not take it too seriously and take it as "this song is great" XD
I actually think of what you just said as being very accurate. So for me, the perfect MT song is defying gravity. Obvs, not just because it's beautiful, but because it helps the character move forward from being a victim, to being empowered, and we are also treated to the character taking action, opposing the wizard, and achieving the power to fly.
@@davidfathom3051 dude that's your opinion. Being negative online gets you nowhere. Everyone's opinion of what makes a good musical (And song in a musical) is subjective. Just because it advances the plot doesn't mean it is a good song or entertaining. And vice versa. Just enjoy the song.. No actual need for essays
This honestly is the BEST show on Broadway! Everything about it is simply divine!!!! I'd recommend this show to ANYONE and EVERYONE from my grandpa to my little sister! Seriously, go see this show!!!!
Im imaging Hamilton bursting into a cabinet meeting singing "THE SEX IS IN HEEL" and him 6 inch knee high heels and Jefferson joining him, Madison looking disappointed, and Washington cheering on his son >v
I've been extremely lucky to have seen this musical twice since it's been on Broadway, and it is certainly one of my favorites! Every time I listen to this song in particular, there's something about it that takes me back to those nights in the theatre. I close my eyes and the music takes over and it's like I can see the lights and everyone dancing onstage. Truly magical.
Frank TheMeme Hehe sure. It’s just a typical HS drama class, I imagine. Sadly, the teacher who took us retired this year :( Most people didn’t like him, but I did :D
I saw this show yesterday and while Brenden Urie was walking down the fashion runway in the heels, someone jumped up in their seat and screamed "WORK IT BEEBO!" and then everyone cheered. It was amazing.
+foreveryoung I was in the same case ! I was with my class for a school trip, we are french and we just over enjoyed these musicals that we don't have in France
Hi, I'm an Italian teacher of English .. I was in London just for two days without my class . I loved it!! That made me take a decision : every time i get to London I have to see a musical!! Byeeeee
Just the days before this musical we saw Mathilda which is a muscial and a theater performance "The curious incident of the dog in the nighttime" I hope one day, musical will be spread all around the world *-*
Here you can see some of them . I think in France , too. .. I saw Jesus Christ superstar with the original cast! Great!! And Notre dame ( Il gobbo di Notre Dame, in Italian), wonderful too but there's no such place like Broadway in the US or the West end in London, specialized in performinng musicals. Here in Italy you can find theaters spread all over the country with every kind of performances, from drama to comedy and so on . I think in France it's quite the same
Seen the show twice in London . gogogogo. talented cast beyond words. fast, pacy, sassy, funny, moving and very sexy. Matt Henry is a star of huge proportions
I just watched the musical yesterday here in toronto and it was a great experience! it was my first time watching a musical too! I say it should have at least 4 stars instead of 3😍😍😍
The music is great. the play is fun and J Harrison Ghee is out of this world. Loved every minute. It made me want to get up and dance, made me feel happy all over
I saw this at the Boston Opera House last night and it was AMAZING. Such a talented cast and the audience was pretty great too. haha I would love to see it again. I love the music. I love the dancing. I love the heels!
Can I just say, Steve Pateman, the real Charlie Price deserves way more credit??? Even though Broadway literally profited off his entire existence and story, he didn’t get a single penny from them. Sadly, unlike the musical, his shoe factory ended up going out of business so he works as a fireman now 😞 He’s a super nice guy too. Even when his factory ran out of business, he made sure his employees were able to find new jobs. However the Broadway musical doesn’t give him any credit or profits for using life his story as a stage show. The only thing they gave him (which they gave begrudgingly) was a Broadway ticket but he couldn’t even afford to go because he didn’t have enough money for a flight and hotel. They won’t let him sell his book at the theaters either nor do they really discuss or credit to the origin and backstory of him and the Northampton factory workers in the playbill. It’s awful that the Broadway musical doesn’t give him enough credit or money for even though they make thousands off his life story. After years of being unnoticed, he finally came out and wrote a book about his life story (and profits go towards firefighters too, he’s such a sweet guy), but he still deserves WAYYY more credit than Broadway gives him, Help this guy out and learn his real story here. JUSTICE FOR STEVE!!!!
