  • The peer mediation process can be very complex and nuanced. In this video, students can learn about how peer mediators guide disputants through the 6 steps in the peer mediation process, and how to use effective communication skills to help guide the students every step of the way. It is important to note that peer mediation is voluntary, confidential, and that all parties must always remain respectful. At no time can the peer mediators insert their own ideas, opinions, or biases. Some of the active listening and communication skills used by mediators include reframing, reflecting, and summarizing. Mediators typically use open-ended questions and try to gather as much information and ideas from the disputants as possible. The peer mediators try to focus on what can be done to resolve the situation, rather than be bogged down by what happened in the past.
The Domestic Harmonizer Program (DHP) is created by The Whitaker Peace & Development Initiative (WPDI). Rooted in restorative practices the DHP works with students and teachers and parents to build a deep understanding of conflict resolution education (CRE). By helping to create peaceful opportunities for exchange and learning, schools can reduce incidents of destructive conflict on campus.
