  • Hey Guys, Ryan and Von here from our off-grid Homestead. One of the biggest challenges of living off-grid in Alaska is getting access to building materials. Most stores are hundreds of miles away and shipping costs are astronomical. Well, We're going to show you how we solved this problem with our own portable sawmill. We'll walk you through the whole process of using trees from our property to mill lumber and getting for a new construction project. This has saved us thousands and allowed us to build just about anything we need using our own local resources. Come check out our setup and let us know if you have any questions.

Great job guys, years ago we owned a Norwood mill, we used it to death. Many years later and retired, I was watch8ng your video and spotted your mill. Then I started researching it. A year later we bought one too…..along with three other people in our tiny community. Anyways looking forward to seeing your mill shed, as we are going to be building one too, we watched how Eric built theirs now to watch yours get done. Great video as usual. 🌷🇨🇦

I think (if you are comfortable sharing the information) that a video with a cost break down/cost per sqft would be very cool on your house because you used the sawmill for the vast majority or all of your lumber (besides the trusses and floor joists I believe). Much love from AZ as my wife and I plan our move back to AK and our own homestead, for now we live vicariously through you and other youtubers!

So happy you hired someone to do the mud and taping. It’s not as easy to do and you have some tall walls. Before you put your shower doors in I would test it. It looks narrow. Love the house so far!

Ryan, you've got the milling down to a 'T' ,(as they say). I know what you mean. There's nothing like milling your own lumber and saving lots of money while doing it. That saw mill shed will be a worth-while project, to say the least. Are you planning on pouring a concrete slab? Take care and all the best. p.s. you guys deserve that beautiful warm day after those -40+ degree days.😊😊

We’re not planning to put a slab. With our cost of concrete, it just doesn’t work out financially. I’m hoping we can make a nice level gravel floor for our needs.

Great saw, but you can make it easier for yourself. Using the jack as you do, take the first cut, turn the log 1/4 turn, take the next cut. Now you can lower the jack. and take the next 2 cuts. Here's how to save yourself some work. but same result.

Good thing you had a stockpile of logs cut from last year. With the amount of snow still on the ground it's hard to cut new trees. Good to see the mill back in operation making progress. Spring hasn't hit Vermont yet...17 degrees this morning and a Winter storm heading our way for tonight.

I know it’s a little concern. Seeing your blade up on that Ranger, those Polaris rangers have awful springs for sagging out.
