    "You have to pay to play" I watched this video and I still bought one! I've driven many cars and bang for buck its well worth it, especially if you know how to do your own maintenance. I would not change my mind at all for any other car within that price range. I picked mine up for $20,000. it needed tires and the passenger electric seat didn't work. best money I have ever spent! I have personally hit 170 on a open highway and it feels like your gliding. I have driven many quick cars including a C5, C6 Corvette, SRT 8 challenger, GT 500 mustang.....the list goes on. IT IS BY FAR THE BEST CAR I HAVE OWNED AND DRIVEN! If you like PORSCHE, drive one and decide for yourself! A simple K&N cold air intake makes a huge difference with these cars. the sound is excellent and you notice the power difference, you even hear when the variable valve timing hits. It's nice seeing the look on people's faces when a flat N/A 3.6L beats or keeps up with their V8's.

    I have a '99 with 170,000 miles on it and it has been one of the most reliable, trouble free cars I've ever owned! It's old, the paint is faded in spots, it has a couple of small dents.... I sure don't own or drive it to impress anyone. I just love how Porsches look and the razor sharp precise feel that you can't get from any other car! The issues in this video are extremely rare. Hardly more than the risks you encounter with any older car.

    ZentRose, I think you've based your claims on a low percentage of problems and a lot of retrofit IMS bearing sales hype. The guys selling the retrofit parts have flooded the internet with horror stories to hook people in. Porsche made over 175,000 996's from 1998-2005 and the majority of them are still running strong. I bought a 99' C2 with 76,000 miles 5 years ago and have had no problems. I did get sucked into the IMS fear and decided to have it and the RMS changed last year. When my mechanic took out the old IMS bearing it was like new, but I changed it for the stronger ceramic bearing anyway. Putting $1500 bucks into a $74,000 dollar car I think was a small price. I drive my car hard and do track days with it and it has been a dream to own and drive. It has been the most enjoyable car I have owned and I've owned some nice cars: RX7, Lotus Esprit, CLK 430 AMG, Porsche 944, Alfa Romeo Spider, Nissan 350z. Many market experts expect a rise in the market for these cars because with the upgrades readily available the bad stigma is wearing off.

      +kevstlou Yes, most bearings that come out are fine. I discussed the limited value of the retrofit in this video.

    I have had mustangs and a camaro, a S-2000 and two different trucks, they all squeak and rattle when they hit 50k-100k but my dads VW GTI has 150k and it doesn't have a single squeak or rattle, my grandfather had corvettes and he loved them BUT and it's a big full bodied BUT, they were complete garbage, my friend(mentor as well) has three Porsches two turbos and a Carrara 4s(996), one of them is a 996, the 996 is his daily, the car has 120k on it and it's built as good if not better then my dads GTI(mk10) no squeaks or rattles and no major mechanical problems with his 997, 996 or his 993, Porsches are actually very reliable if they are taken care of. After watching this, after I get my 996 turbo I'd like to roll by you in your Prius that is just a machine that has no emotional effect because that's what you like and just smile.

    Good review. The most important part of the review is his admission that he is not really into cars and looks at them as numbers. Porsche makes their cars, especially the 911, for driving. Anyone buying one for any other reason besides they just plain enjoy the act of driving and appreciate that a Porsche delivers this better than anything else, is buying for the wrong reasons. So he is right to advise people such as himself to avoid a 911 and its a good review. The question is why a guy who could care less about cars bothers to make a car review video- and why anyone who cares about driving would care what this disinterested numbers cruncher has to say about the worlds best and most iconic driver's car. I sure wish I hadn't wasted my time on it!

    First, the percent of cars affected by the IMS issue was less than 5%. Second, the failures occurred early, in both mileage and years. If they were gonna fail, they did it early. The ones that did are all repaired now or scrapped. The rest just aren't going to fail. Mine is an '01, with 50K. No leaks anywhere, Original brake pads, original exhaust. Had the air/oil separator and the radiator overflow replaced. Had the cam covers resealed once. That's it. In 15 years. I get it serviced by a Porsche dealer at every interval. If you want to know what real maintenance headaches are like, buy a Ferrari.

    I've owned a Corvette, 3000GT VR4, and this model Porsche. This is the funnest car I've ever driven, hands down. It's a great drive, and people absolutely love the car. When it comes to purchasing a sports car, the fact is that emotion is always involved. If it weren't you wouldn't buy a sports car to begin with because they are (in one way or another) a terrible investment. I considered both another Corvette and a Mustang. The Mustang by far the more rational of the two. But, living in Michigan, there are new Corvettes and Mustangs every few feet so it gets boring fast. However, this car has reached it's bottom line years ago, and that is one reason I purchased it. I HATED the bearing issue, and had mine immediately changed out as a type of insurance policy (the engine costs more than I paid for the car). However, most of the problems you mention rarely occur (as does the bearing issue in fact). The new DFI systems in Audi, and in my GMC don't work properly and my engine seized and destroyed the drive train after two years of highway driving. There are pros and cons to owning the car, but you don't seem detached or unemotional. In fact you title this as "...I thought about Porsches recently.... stay away from them. " You've taken a repairable problem on one engine and imposed judgement on an entire brand. You also made it sound as if the IMS is new to this Porsche, which is a little misleading. You didn't mention one of the biggest and most ridiculous reason that this car has a poor resale value. The "fried egg" headlights that are mistaken for the Boxster. Carrera owners absolutely hate them, but someone like me, who isn't a purest, can look past this at a great deal. Perhaps the biggest issue you ignore is the fact that this is the first water cooled engine, which again, set off the purists. You should have brought up these glaring "issues" that the purests, who drive the Porsche brand, hate. Which in turn controls the market price a great deal more than a Honda Civic. I agree with some of what you say, but if you want to sound impartial you might want to put a little more on the positive side of the ledger and lay off a little of the overkill nonsense.

    The IMS is not all that expensive to fix, and does not effect the Turbo or GT models of this car as you mentioned. If your primary concern is engine failure via the IMS, that fix will cost you about 2k through a dealer, and half of that if you do it on your own.
    You mention not being emotional, but your analysis winds up being, well... emotional. You're "afraid it'll happen to you". It's fine to be cautious, but you went through the whole list. The big ticket, catastrophic failures you mention in that list are somewhere on the order of 5k to prevent if you take it to a dealer.
    Other items you mention are thrown out there without mentioning the cost of repair, the probability of it occurring in the next 5k, 10k miles, and so on. You say you're not emotional, but you need to take each car on a case by case basis. If you find a 15k 996 in decent condition and you take the time to think about which repairs you require to feel comfortable with the risk of ownership and rationally assess the cost of those repairs against the base price on the vehicle, then what's the big deal?

      @bnr32jason 8 років тому +1

      Less than 2%? Yeah good job making up numbers. The simple fact is, with 996's now getting so cheap, they are falling into the hands of more enthusiasts who are willing to do their own work, even major stuff like an engine R&R. Hell, that sounds like a fun weekend with some good friends. There's a few 996's local to me for sale for around $12k, so even if it was $6k through a shop, you are looking at under $20k total for a pretty damn good car.

Oh yeah I can see a guy going out and buying the shop book and thinking oh yes I can pull this off not . Most used 911 I've seen are a least 17 to 20k a few with higher mileage for 15 17 but 12k haha hell no . I to wanted a 996 911 but after hearing all the horror stories decided to get a c5 corvette long storey short I can fix my vett right in my driveway love that

I've got two small kids and a wife, we love going on drives together, and everyone fits comfortably. On my local Craigslist there are three 996's for under $14k. But my area (Seattle) has a lot of 911's. Enjoy your Corvette, and stop talking shit about a car you were too scared to buy and have nothing to do with.

    If they're so bad why in 2016 there are so many for sale? If it was really that bad they'd all be in the scrap heap. 996's are NOT the only Porsches to have this issue. And many cars are way more expensive to maintain. Like every other German car company. And what can replace a 996? For you fools saying C5 corvette your crazy. That car is very dated, cheap plastic, not on Porsches level.

    The 996 car's Achilles' heel was a small but vital engine component called the IMS, or Intermediate Shaft bearing. Highly recommend to replace it as soon as possible by an upgrade aftermarket kit, LN engineering kit use ball bearings, they utilize ceramic and steel for their bearings, which have an increased load rating for more heavy duty use, the full cost for a kit and all required tools is a little less than $950.

    • @LesFieldPhotos

      +Stingercam21 In Europe, most people stick the standard bearing in with the dust covers removed. Gets sprayed by the chains constantly and works perfectly. $50 fix next time you're changing the clutch.

      LN kit is still not a magic bullet that you install and forget. It is recommended to change the LN with some frequency, too. Per LN's website: LN Engineering currently offers a Dual Row IMS Retrofit as well as the Single Row Pro IMS Retrofit, where the engine does not have to be disassembled to replace the factory sealed ball-bearing, both with a 6 year/75,000 mile service interval.

    As a 996 owner I can say that history is everything. A documented car certainly helps relieve much of the angst of ownership. However, anything mechanical is flawed immediately by the imperfect people who put it together. You can either accept that and enjoy what you have or hide in a corner wishing what you didn't.

    i Have a 996 and its a good car but you have to do the regular maintenance. Every two year or every 30000km it needs to go to the garage so do that and dont try to save mony by skiping one because you will pay double for it later. So if you cant afford to maintain a Porsche dont buy one. Oh and bring it to the Porsche dealer or a Porsche specialist. So all this guy is saying is bullshit because every performance car needs regular maintenance ! Drive a Suzuki Swift if you dont want that, it keeps on going....

    100% accurate review. I own a well maintained 02 996 with 53,000 miles and I paid 17,000 to get the engine fixed after the bearing failed. A new engine would have been 28,000. The AOS failed too but I was able to replace it myself. Saved me $1500. Generator failed too. Another $1200. Reliability wise this car is a POS but it drives great and it looks great. But this was my first and last Porsche.

    Problem is and always has been that the car was meant to be driven. High mileage 996s seem to hold up well. The garaged drive once every six months ones are blowing all to hell because the lack of use dries the IMS bearings graase up.

    For the low $20K range, you can find many 996's that are in good shape and have already had the IMS retrofit and the Rear Main Seal replaced. (Surprised this second item was not mentioned in the video.) With these two mods, you really just need to look at the same thing you do with other cars that old: how are the clutch, brakes, paint, seals, etc.
    With the current 996 pricing, you can find a good deal on a great car if you do your homework.

    Owned my 02 Carrera 4 996 cab since 2005 and paid 61k. It had 9k miles and supercharger. IMS went our at 32k. Currently have 100k on the reman engine. Runs perfect but I've spent a bundle maintaining it. 13k new engine, 2k to replace some,clutches ( supercharger tends to burn them) 2k tuneup and quite a few thousands more on upgrades. Refinanced and still owe,about 8k. When I think of selling I think how,could I even touch the performace and looks for the 15k or so I could get for it. My car originally cost over 90k when new as,optioned and it shows,in rhe quality of the interior and,driving. Porsches are always ahead of their time in enginnering and features. You just cant buy anything this quality and performance for 15k. I wish I hadn't sold the vortech when I replaced the,engine cause,I'd love to have it on now. (used to run mid 11s)May have to find a kit while they are,still available and if the IMS goes out again I'll get it rebuilt as a high performace 3.8 and put the supercharger on that. Its a Porsche, Its worth it and the fun never stops. The money I 've had to spend is,gone and my car,is,all the better for it so the only way I,could lose,is,to sell for,a,ridiculously low price. These are 70 to 100k cars that perform like no other. s2000 and other cars mentioned are not even in the same league. If you can find a nice example and can afford the maintenance buy one (you wont regret it and just replace the motor with an even hotter custom built 3.6 from a Porsche specialist. For 30k or 40k including the cost of a nice example you will have a badass daily driver or track car that will compete with much more expensive cars including newer porsches and look pretty damn good doing it if you get an 02 or later.

    • @kenshirk6993
      @kenshirk6993 8 років тому

      +Clesarie, Let me know which one's a good investment. To me, unless you can buy a rare Porsche, cheap, none provide investment opportunity. As an investor, wouldn't you buy at the bottom of the depreciation curve, or at least find something with some upside left? The 356, SC, Carrera, 964 and 993 seem to be at the top. How could they be a good investment? Which one is hanging around the bottom of the depreciation curve? ---the 996, especially the 996TT. I have a 996.2 and it has not lost a dime in 5 years. With the outrageous price increase in the air-cooled units can only mean the 996.2 can only hold or raise in value. The 9964S, the GT#, the TT, Silver Anniversary The 997 is vastly better? Jeramy Clarkson makes fun of the fact he can't tell the difference. How is it VASTLY different, (i'll give you the IMS issue in the 06 and up has been removed), But, are you prepared to pay 15K more for the 997-- fix the IMS in the 996 $1,700. I'm nearing a purchase of a 2009 -4S is it a good investment, hell no. But a lot of car for the money. Fun, hell yes. Will I sell the '02 996? Nope. Forget the cayman you'll only look at 911's and wish you had one.. Buy a 996.2 Carrera and if you can afford the 996TT get one they are a blast and then invest in health and science funds......I can't wait to see where these air cooled prices are in several years...I hope the values hold....I've owned them wish I hadn't sold. I'm not a buyer.

    • @matt2m
      @matt2m 8 років тому

      +Clesarie I think all porches are good investments when they hit the bottom of the deprecation curve. All the bad ones are dead or dying by then,then the market eats up the ones that are available when they become affordable. Then you are left with the low miles survivors and the one with everything fixed with records and appreciation because there are not many of them left. I remember when the early 90s ones were in the 20s. Someone close to my family told me there are 2 ways to drive a car for "free" meaning only gas and insurance. Buy a desirable car with unique options drive the shit out of it and sell it withing the first 3 years. The bmw 1m and the porshe gt4 come to mind limited run cars. You can find a 1m at msrp with 30k on the clock. The next way is buying a car at the bottom of the curve. He has a yellow 94 that he is very much above the break even point.

    Engine failure is one of those tales... Phase 1 997s also had problems...
    No, I just would not touch a 996 because it is simply, profoundly, irretrievably ugly. So non-911 looking that I hate it with a vengeance (I write these comments as I just bought my eleventh 911 -a Turbo S 991- which does NOT make me a hero, just a real Porsche addict.) By the way, the best condamnation of the 996 came from Porsche themselves... they put the usual "round eyes" look back on the 997, and ever since (well, a bit elongated on the 991, but nothing like the "melted cheese" look.

    For all of us concerned about the Porsche IMS Bearing issue - I found a very informative article from Autohaus Hamilton in Australia about the IMS. The article also lists all the models and engines (with engine numbers) that are affected. To read the article just type in “Autohaus Hamilton IMS” into google. The Porsche models that are prone to IMS failure and should be replaced are: - All 986 Boxster models. - 987 Cayman & Boxster models up to engine number 61504715 - All 996 models (not including: GT and Turbo models) - 997 3.6ltr with M96/05 up to engine number 6950745

    Just looking at it honestly, I've had 3 996's. A 2001 turbo, a '99 Carrera 4, and currently a 2002 turbo. I have owned one of these three over the last 6 years and only had one problem, the 2001 turbo alternator failed but I pulled it and had it repaired then replaced it for $28. You can change the oil, plugs and filters yourself. You can have it aligned at any top shelf tire place. You can upgrade the heck out of these cars, especially the turbo. This guy is just plain wrong. I could list potential problems for any car all day long but it doesn't mean it happens to many of them. Also, I paid $30,000 for my 2002 turbo, there aren't many options available at $30,000 that give you that kind of performance. This guy obviously didn't take that car around a a corner.

The cost of replacing the IMS is small for what you are getting. I remember replacing my catalytic converter on my Jeep and that cate allown was $2,000. Some repairs are just expensive and must be done. Your points are correct regarding the 1998 - 2008. All had an IMS.

  • @mkgplastering

    The 996 actually saved porsche from a financial meltdown in the late 90's. It seems there was next to no profit margin to be had in previous incarnations largely due to the over engineering that went into them during manufacturing.
    The 996 was a mass produced car where cost cutting was a prime concern. All the points this guy listed are indeed very real concerns with the m96 and to a lesser degree the m97 engine. He left out undersized big end bearings and conrods though. Do all cars fail eventually, no. But if you are honest are you really comfortable driving around in a 911 with an engine that is hugely questionable from an engineering standpoint.
    I'm a huge 911 fan dont get me wrong, i just have little faith in the m96/97 engines. Porsche never did own up to the short comings of these engines however the 997.2 moved to a totally new direct injection engine that has done away with all previous listed faults.

    I think 996s are a great buy for the money. I see them going for over $20k now so seems price is staying steady. I know full well that these are the hated 911s. Having said that, I'm sure there are some issues, but they mostly seem to stem from the IMS bearing - change that and you seem to be ok for about $1k.
    I actually like the fact that these are hated, makes them cheaper now and like many folks have said on the thread, these only have one place to go - up. I would buy if I had a chance. Oil change seems pretty easy to do.

    My main issue was always the front end and interior styling. After '02, all 996's shared the Turbo's headlamps and improved the build quality. I've luckily known no one with a 996 that has had IMS issues. I own a Cayman (bought new in '08). It has the M97 engine, which like the '06-08 997 models, has an improved IMS (unfortunately not replaceable if it goes, though the chances are far more remote) and is considered more reliable than the M96 motors of the 996 as well as the 1st gen (986) Boxster. I have 62k miles on my car, and no issues. I'm considering a 996 or 997 cabrio (C4S or Turbo) for my first 911, but I'm spoiled by the simple and vice-free ride/handling combination of the Cayman even though it lacks the power of the 911 (all relative, the Cayman still has more grip and power than I normally ever use). Used Type 987 Caymans and Boxsters are a relative bargain, similar in price to earlier 996 Carreras but newer, with better quality, and probably more reliable.

    Thank you for sharing your thoughts and comments about the 996. For most people usefull advice.Also for me: "where smoke is must be a fire" But clearly not for the Porsche-addicts or "investors" below. I own a black 996 mk1 C2, 1999, double IMSbearing, nearly 130k(km) on it.Bought it 3 weeks ago. Totally love it: the looks,smell,sound, drive, shifting. Most other cars of this age (nearly 17 years!) are already gone and some for a long time. Not my Porsche, its still standing strong and is a dream to ride and looks staggering. But due to all of these internet hoaxes I'm a bit concerned. Should I do the conversions or: "don't fix it if it's ain't broken?" After all it runs just fine the past 16 years. I think I just do routine maintenance and see what happens.And: Don't buy a Porsche or other high performance car if you want to have a cheap ride. It will always cost you.

    First I like you have the balls to enable comments, the IMS issue has been the execration of the 996 but that doesn't apply for all of them is a 1% probability with this issue, buying one for $15000 immediately will raise flags no one who has been diligent with maintenance will let it go for so low, also remember if you have a 99 is a 16 year old vehicle and been German will require money for maintenance but this cars well maintained can last you for a long time and for the money you pay no one will match this performance.

    • @ZentRose
      @ZentRose  9 років тому

      +Al Bundy There are no meaningful statistics available on engine failures for these cars. When I purchase a german car (Like my E90 M3). I set aside money for engine failures in a separate trading account called an "engine failure fund". It happens a lot and the porsche communities brush it off. When I blew up my last BMW I just sold it as is. It wasn't worth the headache.
      The thing about the base porsche owner is that most of them do not have money. One guy in a base porsche tried to buy my Viper and he got offended when I told him he couldn't afford it. These comments just highlight the porsche owner's insecurities. If you have cash, buy a 996 turbo. It's 50k and an incredible bargain.

      +ZentRose, thank you for your reply, about the statistics, this are based on the CEF, Porsche recolected during the warranty period from vehicles 99 to 04, Boxsters and 911's, also some 997's 05-08 have the same issue with the IMS causing CEF, if I was on my 20's, a college student or leaving pay check to pay check, I won't buy a 996 as my daily driver.
      Yes maintenance is expensive in this vehicles specially as they get older, mine I bought it as a weekend car, I spent, in the course of a little over a year around $6000, I didn't change the IMS and the RMS and water pump or clutch. Remember the base Porsche is the Boxster not the 911, no one with no money would there to touch a used Porsche but like always they are exemptions.
      About discriminating because some one came in a "Base Porsche", man, you have a lot to learn in life, even if I have someone in a Corolla stepping at my business is going to be treat as the one with the Bentley.

    Suprised you bought an E92 though, as it also suffers from catastrophic engine failure.

      Adrian A The M3 is worth the trouble. I put the E90 through it's paces while I owned it and didn't feel nervous about it. I also set up an account to fund it in case of engine failure. The car held up great and I had an absolute blast owning it and working on it.

    just get the IMS bearing replaced - do a new clutch and plate at the same time all in under $3K - just plan on it from the purchase - and you have a bullet proof daily driver with a new 60k mile clutch - or buy a Camrey.

      +Phillip Pugh You do know that C5 Corvettes are plagued by their own expensive gremlins, including major electrical problems, interior water leaks, constant ABS failures, bad valve springs and lifters, transmission issues galore. All high end sports cars have problems because they're test beds for technology and advancement. GM is having major issues out of the new Vettes as well. The most reliable sports car of the last 25 years or so is probably the Acura NSX and even they have some issues.

      The LN IMS kit, for example, is still not a magic bullet that you install and forget.
