  • Retracting Caster Wheel Workbench (Part 2)
    Burton Builds
    S03E13
In this episode I demonstrate how the retracting caster wheel mechanism on my workbench raises and lowers the table.
I was able to raise and lower 200kg (441 lbs) with this setup but your mileage may vary depending on design and material selection.

You’re incredibly talented brother. My hat goes off to you sir. I’d love to buy the plans for this build if you have them available

Hi Fernando, thanks for the compliment. Unfortunately I don't have any plans available, like most of my other builds, they are more of 'design as you go' style... It starts with a rough idea, then I look at what scrap i have laying around and start mixing and matching from there.
I must say that the separate rolling base was originally designed to be multi purpose... one for moving the workbench around and a second use as a flat rolling platform to move stuff around (of course the table would have to be tilted over so the rolling base could slide out... and there in lies the problem). The table is so heavy that it's not easy to tilt and roll the base out. Would have been better to come up with retractable / foldable side guides, so they could be folded away and the base rolled out from under the table easily.
Also, the side guides don't have to be bearings... they can be solid bars or pieces of tube and it will work just fine.
What might also be an idea is to have a cam lift design like this one but swap out the threaded rod and winding handle for a long lever arm that is pulled by hand through 90 degrees...

Justin Weyer Thanks dude. I used a product called Hardtop Flexi made by Jotun. It’s a two component chemically curing aliphatic acrylic polyurethane coating... supposed to be tough stuff. Was recommended by a good friend of mine. I think the finish would have been better if it was sprayed but I didn’t have a spray gun with a large enough nozzle so ended up brushing it on. Also painted a sample to test how tough it actually is, but haven’t put it through it’s paces yet.
