A love triangle is only truly bad when one character is a better person than the other and you know who the main character is going to end up with. For example, in the Hunger Games, Gale had no chance because he was more angry than Peeta and wasn't as kind. However, Cassandra Clare's Clockwork Angel series had an amazing love triangle because both men were amazing people... (not saying names because spoilers, figure everyone knows everything about Hunger Games by now)
The 'All for the Game Series' is a great contender for the lonely character struggling to accept friendships category. It also falls into the found family trope. Actually, in hindsight, this fits most aspects that were mentioned in this video. The story does have a romance, but it develops really slowly and really only becomes a 'romantic' relationship much later. And the characters aren't the creativ-artsy type, anything but actually. And it's just overall a great story.
i so need more books with lonely characters who DONT end up with a huge group of friends too! not all of us want to see the "happy endings" that are just proving young readers that they need friends to be happy instead of they can make themselves happy too! people aren't for everyone and i wish that was shown in more books

And also finish throne of glass, there's only one book left (thought it is a little over 900 pages).
I pretty much agree with everything you’ve said. A lot of the turn off’s for me is the predictability when it comes to books wether it be the love triangle, war torn country, strong powerful character who loves the arts. Read it too many times.
I’m sure you’ve likely already read it, and it does revolve around war, but The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini focuses very heavily on dragons and the main character struggles with social interactions and the like 😌 There also isn’t a romance plot around the main characters! It’s so good.
When you brought up the lack of dragons within the YA world, I immediate thought that I would love to have more Middle Eastern to Asian region mythology. I do think there’s more of it within the YA world, but I would love a lot more! Happy Thanksgiving, Jesse! Stay safe and warm and also good luck with packing/moving!
Check out Eon: Dragoneye Reborn the first book of the Two Pearls of Wisdom duology, Its about Dragons and has a Chinese and Japanese type worldbuilding. Its amazing and dragged me out of a four month reading slump.
This got me thinking, I would love to see a video where you provide examples of books that do these tropes WELL. Like I always say The Infernal Devices did the love triangle trope so well no one else even needs to try, society can move past the need for love triangles. What are books/series that actually PULL OFF your most hated tropes?
Jesse! About the “why is there always a war brewing in fantasy?” I agree, I recommend looking into the “fellowship” stories, since they’re about a group of people traveling together. Like The Hobbit or Kings of the Wyld. I would say Lord of the Rings but there is a war in that series (though the focus is on traveling and the relationship of the fellowship, especially in the first book). I know you’re not a LOTR person though, but there’s a whole sub-genre of fellowship-type books which are just adventures in a fantasy world.
No offence but The Lord of the Rings series is kind of boring for me, obviously you have your own opinion. I had started to read it but didn't like it. Are the other books in the series good?
@@DAbibliophile It's definitely not for everyone. I personnally didn't know it was gonna be 70% of the characters just travelling, so I was a bit surprised. I still like it though. I think people should mention that it's a slow book when they talk about it, instead of just praising it.
for me, it’s hard to talk to people not because i think they don’t like me, but the opposite. i know that my parents and such love me so much and they would worry about me. i don’t like worrying or having people worry about me. it’s only been lately when i’ve even had the courage to say stuff to my parents and post things that i like doing (like singing) on my instagram. thanks for listening to my ted talk
I agree it’s the way a trope is written and not the trope itself. I absolutely love love triangles when they’re done well but majority of them are just super obvious who is end game.
“Where my Dragons at?” The people who’s favorite mythical animal is a Phoenix: First time? (Ps. If there are any good books with Phoenixes PLEASE tell me which ones!)
Totally agree with all of your points. This year I tried getting into YA books more, but I was getting frustrated seeing some of the things you mentioned. I hate the overuse of characters being into the arts and always having their "nose in a book". I understand that authors want to write an experience that may be similar to theirs, but I would love to see a character with different interests. A person can be just as deep and be into the math or science. I think its a missed opportunity to look over those different experiences.
I think when I first got into YA I loved seeing the book lover character type, but I can definitely see now that it's a bit overused. I still love it sometimes, but it just depends on how "in your face" it is about it.
Does anyone actually have any book recommendations about lonely characters? Main character preferably around 18 years old , not living at home? Feel like I could do with a book like this now

Lol same but for science
I agree, I need more slow burn romance books.
omg I agree on EVERYTHING! especially the thing about knowing exactly what characters will end up together right away. It drives me insane.
Me: has an exam tomorrow and should study
Jesse: posts a video
Me: whelp i wasnt doing anything anyway!
YASSSS sometimes slow paced books are the best you can really soak up the universe
Please you are so relatable😂😭😂😭
Totally with you about the dragons point! 🐉
i’m so glad you mentioned that comparisons hot take. when the gilded wolves came out everyone was comparing it to soc and i saw so many negative reviews saying how disappointed people were that they werent the exact same and it put me off reading it. well i read it this year, its one of my new favorite books, and while there are similarities to soc, that comparison really hurt the book i feel like
Excited for part 2!!
:D
Omg characters being alone is SO true. I'm 19 and dont have any friends, my one friend is busy all the time so we cant lean on each other right now. It's harder when you know people my age have lots of friends, in all the shows and books etc they have lots of friends OR they have a partner next door lmao
You giving Gibly movies as an example of fantasy stories without a war in it is so funny to me because I just saw "Howl's Moving Castle" today. It is based on a fantasy book without a war in it, but a Gibly added one in
The Last Namsara is a great series that has dragons!! I completely reccomend it and loved reading it :)
The first book *chefs kiss*
I totally agree with slow burning romance. I don't know why they rush it.
without romance how would readwithcindy have any books over 1 star all the stars come from the seggs scenes
Of course! Where are the damn dragons, lonely people and weaklings?!
My favorite book of all time is Be Not Far From Me by Mindy McGinnis. It's so beautifully done and has a great paise. We follow our main character Ashley as she is trying to find her way back, after getting lost and injured in the middle of the smokey mountains. As she is trying to find her way home struggling, we learn about her past. I highly recommend :)
I absolutely loved this! I couldn’t agree more with a lot of the points that were brought up.
I need more standalone YA fantasy!!!! Please!!! There are moments when I don't have the energy to read a series and I want a quick read.
HAHAHA I 100% relate on being stuck on TikTok until 2am.. and I totally agree with you on everything you said in this video!!!! And YAAASSSS TO MORE YA DRAGON BOOKS!!!!! And also yes to anxiety ridden leads!!!!!!!!!
Want a good YA book about dragons?
I got you.
Fireborn by Rosaria Munda.
The sequel will also be out soon!
Your last point resounded so much with me! Soooo many similar book titles. I honestly get confused about whether I read a book or not, bc they all sound alike...
