- Oh no SHEIN didn't!! The aftermath of The Cut's recent article, Shein Is Even Worse Than You Thought, has left the internet in shambles and Ben is offering some reflections. Many argue there is no conscious consumption under capitalism, but Ben thinks there's at least some better options than buying 41 items of clothing for 12$ at the detriment of exploited workers!

I am so glad that this is FINALLY being talked about because I feel like people knew but didn't realise how horrible it actually is.
i honestly didn't know, but this kinda helped me finally realize
ur at the top of the comment section congratulations
Well I've seen quite a few people talk about this however that was a while ago and I feel like now everyone has just left it and kind of ignored it, like climate change etc. I think people forget half the time about all these issues because everyone kind of talks about it once then never again.
(Sorry kinda went on a rant there)
Nike is probably the worst one, and the saddest part is that they are so popular, and it’s cool to wear Nike shoes, but they force children to make their shoes
NO BCZ FR
i really appreciate this bc i feel like whenever i criticize fast fashion, i feel like i’m classist. SHOP GOOD QUALITY. SHOP GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT. SHOP GOOD.
Goodwill was fire ngl 🔥 for the poor [which was me at the time 💀]
@harold bruse That's why I made it a duty give to away any clothes to the good will or thrift store that I'm not wearing anymore that are in good condition. Sorry if that sounded overdramatic.💀
once i have the money for that sure. but for now i’m gonna keep buying shein :)
@@josieandjimmy.1 genuine question, and im not some rich arse that’s trying to be classist, but why? it’s not financially responsible anyways, as the quality is poor (so the clothes aren’t good), and they won’t last you very long anyways. it’d be cheaper to have fewer clothes that are better in quality, but got a few dollars more. like idk.
@@cyrus2430 speaking as someone is is HELLA poor, I understand both takes honestly. BUT im also a 16 yr old girl and u don’t understand how upsetting it is having to watch my mom sacrifice food for a week and pay $50 for a crop top bc i wanna go to a party in something besides a tshirt. Thrift stores are the best, but I live in the south and its hard to find cute shit there. Ik its not responsible all the time, but every now and then I buy shit from shein so my parents dont have to make the decision between dinner for a week or my happiness.
I went to a thrift store last week and got 5 pieces for $5! It’s extremely affordable and they’re easy to access
Omg that’s super good!! You’re so lucky! I live super far from stores and transportation is expensive for me, and still at my thrift stores one item cost around 15 dollars (which is expensive for me).
@@sudssubs4053 oh man that sucks so hard 🙁 next time you’re on a road trip, I recommend running around some corner stores- the place I went was tiny and didn’t have many customers, so aim for places you haven’t heard of before. $15 dollars per piece is ridiculous in comparison! I wish you luck!
Ahh that's cool!!
U just reminded me- I went to a thrift store thats really far from the place I live at and I found a youtooz for FIVE DOLLARS and I bought it feeling guilty for some reason and then- I search the youtuber up um- and I found out they're not the best person um..-
They're name's miniladd or smthn
Hopefully I can find a way to trade it somehow yk- I might customize it if not-
@@brachess turn it into a peppa pig
@@brachess wow! That’s pretty insane, I’ve never seen a Youtooz in a thrift store before 😨 guess you now know why they got rid of it. Hopefully you can trade it or customise it soon!
i've told many people about how awful shein is. nobody listened. what a world we live in.
honestly, like trying to tell them and like all they say is "idc"
tried to tell my friend but she doesnt really take it seriously sadly
"The clothing is cute and cheap"
I’m not at all defending shein bc it is horrible and what they do, but like yk things like apple and Nike are sweatshops too
They always just straight up say no that’s a lie
as someone who goes to her local thrift shop regularly, if you care so much about clothes from shein and their "style" thrift stores HAVE shein items. my mom and i every single time we go thrifting, we play a game called "who can find stuff from shein first?" because you are guaranteed to find something from shein.
But you aren't directly buying from shein
@@loop5312 that's the whole point of the comment AND the video 💀💀
@@asht0nkai yeah?
@@loop5312 yeah.
@@KysEcstacy yeah
experiences ive had as a former consumer
-a hole in my pocket (which i didnt do)
-fabric thats thinner than school toilet paper
-elastic thats tight as heck (ill literally take off the thing and have it deeply printed in my skin)
-a ring breaking in half a day after getting it (was literally being gentle with it too)
-bows falling off socks just by washing them once
-plastic feeling print
-fraying ribbons
-choker poking at my neck
-ive seen photos that were directly stolen from other companies along with the designs
-seams sticking out and making things uncomfy
-green fingers
-broken zippers
i think theres more but i cant think
I see so many tiktokers do like $200 SHEIN hauls even tho they can obviously afford super expensive clothing, but they still continue to buy from sweatshops that don’t pay workers…
Yea and then they buy the most expensive stuff from shein too!
And the way shein clothes are flooding the damn thrift stores.. good lord
Ikr 😭 at least if you do accidentally end up buying it it'll at least go to something good
I love thrifting so much! I went to a thrift store last week and I got so many adorable clothes for only $20 dollars. I’m so glad you talked about this and I totally agree!
I’m so glad he’s brought this up. The last time I bought stuff off shein, I had this black shirt with skeleton hands on it and it went through the washer once and I never got it back since today. I’ve looked through every place it could be, and I’ve decided it most definitely disintegrated IN the washer, considering that same load of laundry it was in got weird black fuzz and a couple stains on some of the clothes. +, in that same order, I got black checkered jean shorts and every time they entered the laundry, they shrank. And I made sure to get a size up in case I grew into them. So, I’ve genuinely just stuck with Amazon, or actual stores you can go to in person like target, Michael’s, or even Walmart, because their starting to get on trend clothes that are reasonably expensive, and you can SEE what they actually look like. DONT TRUST THESE COMPANIES!! (Shein, romwe, etc.) believe me, you’ll get stuff off there and you’ll regret it once you receive it and it’s terrible quality.
Omg saame, i got a leather jacket from the thrift store goodwills and i washed it once with the others, sad to say my jacket got completedly torn up and bunch of black pieces were coming off everywhere. ☹️
TYSM. Like why is nobody talking about this?? Trying to inform other people and all they say is "idc". You guys don't care about the world we are living in. I am so glad that Ben is raising awareness. No one listens but this guy. I'm so glad we have Ben.
I am so glad you made this video. I feel like so many people dont actually know how bad this fast fashion is for our society and environment. I used to buy from shein all the time and am very aware now how bad it really is. I do like how the pieces look and still am sometimes temped to look deeper into some of these items, but then I think again at where it will end up within a few wares. Its really sad how big this company is and how much damage it is causing our world.
I RARELY get new clothes. I've been wearing pretty much the same shit for 3 years, not by choice. Mainly because of **inflation** and the **cost of living**. Yeah, I have been to charity shops, but absolutely none of the clothes fit me (really hard to find teen-sized clothes). Plus, there's none in my area. I will never buy from Shien or any of those other devilmade fast fashion websites. 😵 This is why I look forward to holidays like Christmas 👍 never know if you're gonna get clothes
i will admit, i shopped at shein for a while bc i was broke and needed clothes for cheap, then i realized that it’s cheap for a reason and that it is not good to support places like that.
this is so true I know so many people that buys from different online stores that’s very bad for the planet and I think more people should understand that even if it’s cheap it is still very bad to buy from there.
I never realized shein was bad until about a month ago and now I feel horrible for buying stuff from there 😭
It’s okay. You didn’t know. Don’t blame yourself. Just don’t do it. again :)
I genuinely had no idea about this! I took your advice and tried thrifting for the first time with my sister yesterday and all I can say is...I'm never buying new clothes again!!!
I think another important point that people often glaze over or just aren't aware of is the fact that just about every clothing brand is fast fashion. Obviously, brands like Shein, Yesstyle, and AliExpress are the worst of them and should be avoided at literally all costs but pretty much every clothing store in your local mall (glassons, cotton on, brandy melville, etc) is also guilty of fast fashion and sweatshop use, not to the same degree as shein but they're still exploiting workers are paying ridiculously low wages. Personally, a lot of clothes I find in my local thrift stores aren't really my style (I've found some gems tho so definitely still worth looking) but to avoid supporting fast fashion companies I buy a lot of my clothes on sites like depop and trade me so that i can still get clothes from fast fashion brands like the less bad (but still bad) ones i mentioned above but for way cheaper and without contributing to fast fashion
I bought a really nice handbag recently - it wasn't from a big designer brand, though it looks designer - and shien literally ripped them off and made the same thing but obv lower quality
just listening to the shit that happens is disgusting to me. Its rlly hard to avoid fast fashion nowadays because so many popular brands use sweatshops or unethical suppliers :((
I love your podcasts I listen to them on my bus everyday
That’s so cool lol cool routine
And then they are like: “well I don’t have that much money and I want cheap clothes”. Now this is a valid argument but there are many many thrift stores/ used clothes stores that sell better quality clothes, is better for the environment and it’s super cheap. They also often have really good bargains where they sell popular clothing brands for a fraction of the price.
I keep telling my friends about it and they keep saying “ I don’t care “ like tf?
The fact that under this video there's a shein ad😭
never bought or won a piece of fast fashion in my life im soo glad he talks about this im always telling my friends not to buy from store like shien due to child labour and low wadges but most of the time they dont shop there soo ty ben
I went thrifting the other day and i bought three things for 3$!
Not a shein ad being beneath this ☠️
The way my mom, who criticizes me for watching this podcast’s, hot take of the decade is that she hates shein.
Thrifting, Walmart, TJ maxx and Ross sales rack, buying cheap off season clothes for next year, there are certainly alternatives to fast fashion. Not to say that other places that produce cheap clothing aren’t necessarily problematic, but places like shein seem to be the worst option😅 and it’s a much bigger, deeper problem, like it’s hard to point fingers at shein when fast fashion brands here are so prevalent as well, but shein is doing this at an unprecedented rate. There’s also the social media/peer pressure aspect, the cult of overconsumption and materialism that make people think that they have to keep up with trends or that they can’t repeat outfits or whatever. It’s sad that we’ve gotten to this place, but we have to educate ourselves and do better. At least we have to try
god ben i appreciate this so so much. i cannot understand the people who blatantly ignore the absolute disgustingness of these brands (mainly SHEIN my goodness) after being completely educated on it. THANK YOU SO MUCH. like i really truly appreciate it. you're using your platform for such good. like i've been waiting for this to come to the surface for so long and oh my goooodness it feels so great for people to be aware and educate others.
this is exactly what i need after a break up i dont think u understand how many meme videos i tried finding on tiktok to get happier
I hope you’re doing a lot better now :D
my best friend is obsessed with ZARA, and her mom is too, right? so of course, they love shopping there together or even just online. so when i found out the horrific truth i immediately went to tell her. she was like "omg, i'll try shopping there a lot less." but it's been around a year since i've told her and she doesn't spend 50$ there's no way. she just always gets 1 or 2 pieces from there. the reason for this is bc here in Iraq, where im from and currently living for a while, it's hard to really find clothing that is like a FRESH style, idk how to explain it but if you didn't know, we don't have thrift stores or department stores like Macy's, TJ MAXX, Marshalls and Ross (great alternatives btw you should definitely try them out). Okay, we don't have it except if you go to the mall, there are two specific stores you can go to for GEN Z style clothes, Defacto and LC WAIKIKI. Both are European stores, BUT they're EXPENSIVE. So my friend sometimes goes there i do too if my dad gets his salary (when it was above 2k now it's like 250$ or something cause he had problems with his boss so he terminated him or smth he's a pilot btw) but it's not easy, except if you go on Instagram there are pages that have a really good deal on some cute things like each page has it's own aesthetic except like it's hard to find one with good quality. so i guess that's all i have to say thank you for reading all this and if you just scanned it that's fine too. bye!
yeh i wasn’t able to wear anything nike growing up because my dad is so against sweatshops. i’ve been thrifting since i was able to walk and i used to be embarrassed but adult me is grateful
So if we stop buying from places that have child workers those kids will have to work harder and more dangerous jobs like farming. This was actually proven when a politician banned a certain clothing company from import to the US or something to that extent I’ll add the specifics later. So yeah it’s worse to say the solution is to stop buying those products I’m not an economist or any professional but I’m sure we can help build better working conditions for those kids and employees by campaign or other political interventions
Nike does sweatshops too,so hard to find ethical brands I don’t even bother
It sucks that I do need to depend on companies like this to survive. I barely have an outfit a day because I’m in California, broke as hell, and it’s the only thing I can afford
Edit: this is why I feast off of Ross
Ben never fails to make me laugh and ben if ur reading this OMG
Yess I love ur username
Oh now I feel bad, I got a bag from shein, and my sister gets stuff from there. Thanks for making this video to educate people 👍
I got an advert to this and made me really sad. My mum doesn't let me bye from shien
No such thing as thrift shops in uk ‼️
Yes, charity shops!! ❤
There are! You’ve just got to look for them!
It makes since! But another thing to worry about is that you can find stuff like that at thrift shops. People need to be more educated about fast shops or it will still happen!
*sense
I am so happy this is finally being talk about
Last Year I Brought a shirt from Shein and I kid you not I washed It 2 times and there was lint, rips, and bits falling off all the time.
I’ve only ever gotten one pair of leggings from shein , and even that was from a thrift store so it wasn’t directly from shein. Before now the reason I didn’t buy from there because I’m not big on online shipping. Now I will definitely not be buying realizing what they put their workers through . I’m even considering throwing away my second hand shein leggings .
Ngl I completely agree but the fact that the shops like H&M and zara in malls still use sweatshops as well is just so bad and it seems like the only option like truly is thrifting especially in places with not many local clothing shops and even that is quite difficult bc ngl thrifting in the us seems so much more worth it compared to the uk where every charity shop is tiny and only has a limited supply of stuff that’s just not flattering most of the time
I legit love thrifting sm! im like comfortable and dont NEED super cheap clothes but thriftiness is fun cause as u said there is always different things no matter what. I honestly have so much cut shit from thrifts.
I’m guilty of shopping at shein, even if it was just a couple times. But now I’m done, I want to help the world not harm it.
I'm really happy that someone who isn't a fashion/clothing content creator talking about SHein and Fast Fashion, because of the audience possibly widening a lot. :]
not to mention that thrift stores are being filled with shit clothes like shein cause of micro trends. it is such bs
I was telling my mom about this and she told me about her coworker who buys from them because other brands don’t have many plus sized clothes for so cheap
Thank you so much for actually talking about this. People don’t realize how much shein hurts the environment. Also shein literally has LED. Led in there clothes and it doesn’t even last long.
That little giggle before stirring the pot 😂😂😂 6:09
I am so glad you brought light on this because someone in this world has died because of people wanting to save money by purchasing shitty clothes and it’s an actual issue
My only issue is that my area doesn't have many thrift shops and the ones they do have only have full on 50 year old mom clothes or baby clothes. And Im only 14, no car, my family has no money for gas, and I know maybe "I shouldn't worry about all that" but the little clothes have are hand me downs and have holes, my dad doesn't care what kind of clothes I want. I got new shoes for the first time in a couple years yesterday tho 😝😝😝
im so happy you made this a playlist i need this to do my homework play games and just listen to it :D
i had this old pair of levis jeans and last week they ripped on the ending part so i decided to not trhrow them and adjust them adding my touch
i shop at shein. i am very aware of everything going on. unfortunately sometimes it’s the only thing i can do. i shop in person at stores and go thrifting but im plus sized. often i can never find clothes my size or they are all “plus size fashion”. i am very confident in my body and plus size fashion isn’t my favorite. i go thrifting and its never my size. it’s my last resort sometimes. the only thing i buy from there is my swimsuit
I have Shein clothes, some of my favorite clothes are from Shein.
If I had my own free will with where I got clothes, I would almost only shop at thrift stores. But my mum shops at Shein every month or so and has me pick a few pieces of clothing to get
it's not great :/
Edit: no mum slander, shes a pretty cool person, she just shops fast fashon occasionally, and I spoke to her after writing this comment and she said she agreed with me about thrifting!!
(sorry for incorrect or bad english, it is not my first language)
Ever since I heard about the triangle shirt factory fire and what sweatshops are I dropped them. I only by mainly thrifted clothes because I hate how poorly the workers are treated plus it’s a lot more affordable for me.
i need ben to be a backyardigan for halloween. no additional comment.
also OMFGGG BEN CONGRATS ON 5MILLLL IVE BEEN SUBBED TO U FOR 3 YEARS AND I CANT BELIEVE HOW MUCH UR CHANNEL HAS GROWN!!!!
Yes we need this in our lives
Omg omg omg omg yes
There aren't thrift stores avaliable in my area 😕
amazin that someone with a big platform is speakin on this
ITS SO INSANE. And people either don’t know or don’t care because it doesn’t affect them like??????
I forgot not everyone knows about sweatshops cuz in my school in the uk one of the first things we learned in geography class in high school year 7 was sweatshops
I went to my local goodwill and got a pair of heels in NEW condition for only 7$. I bought a tank top from SheIn for 7$ years expecting good quality but it was stretched out and didn't last long. I don't buy from SheIn anymore for that reason
Ben after watching this I’ll no longer shop at shein ! Even though I never find anything at my goodwill I’ll keep digging until I find something :))
im so happy when you post somethinggg
i love ur podcasts sm
I love your podcasts ben💕
i totally agree, and guys if you want to learn a bit more about these topics and shein, a youtuber called Mina Le does a really good deep dive into these subjects and explains it alot more.
i agree but i am plus size & most thrift stores don’t even have clothes that fit me, AND the ones that do are from places like shein, romwe, and other places. so where do i get clothes that FIT and are cheap ? i have no where else to get clothes genuinely. a lot of skinnier ppl take clothes that would fit me normally and wear that as “oversized”.. soooooo yea really can’t win in this situation
I bought from shein once and I insanely regret it. I didn't make a big purchase but I've switched over to thrifting instead.
I totally agree with ben but i find it so hard to find a good thrift store near my house and they usually have like 0 walking space so i find it hard to feel comfortable in there and theres nothing id really wear tbh, but i really wanna get into thrifting as theres a new thrift store near my house that seems like its more spacious
I feel horrible, I’ve never bought anything from shein, but when it first became popular I considered it, and hearing the conditions these workers suffer in, I feel awful. My aunt gave me a sweater she bought off shein and I really like it, but I wouldn’t buy it myself
Yeah I kept telling my friend that, she said TikTok made it up
I only order accessories off of shein now. Because the clothes I ordered once the decal on the shirt started pealing in 2 weeks.
I work at a thrift shop and I can confirm that a lot of our prices are cheaper than shein. Even on our markup (designer) clothing
After shopping on SHEIN once, (for orders) and browsing on their site every now and then, I didn’t think anything of what they are doing but, I will still continue to shop from them. My experience has been great from them, I have- no money. I have tried thrifting, I don’t have opportunities to go thrifting all the time like every one else does, I also have problems finding things that, match my style, are comfy, and my size. SHEIN has been great for me. I can’t even shop on Amazon anymore. Everything on Amazon is $10. I would LOVE to try thrifting, but I don’t have ANY good places in my area.
I love thrifting it’s so cheap and you can find a shirt worth like 150$ for 20$ or once I found 300$ Jordan’s for 70$ so underrated. If you need places, Plato’s closet, or savers idk if they are global but they are usually stacked with good deals
What I do as I don't have many thrift stores in my area i wait until khols has there clean out sales where everything gets marked down to 90% off and then I'll get some clothes to wear for the upcoming seasons and put them away until it's that type of weather I get well made clothes for cheap and it's sustainable as I've turned 18 7 months ago I started trying to pay for my own clothes as much as I can to take that burden off my parents so I'll ask for gift cards to stores I like to shop at and I'll usually wait for sales unless I need something like right now for something. Like I just got my Easter dress, cardigan, tank top,and skirt for just under $45 which I had in store credit and gift cards.
I don’t go thrifting for my normal clothes so idk to much but I do thrift for costume(I do costumes for theater) and one of my favorite skirts came from it, people are sleeping on thrifting
I got an ad for shein under this!
I listen to yiu while doing homework and schoolwork
I totally agree with you! 💙 Thrift stores and consignment businesses are so much fun to shop. I think some people have an attitude of classism towards stores like that for being junkie/cheap/used/gross... which is just snobbish imo. Just wash them when you get home. duh. That's what I do. I also think some ppl find thrift stores a little intimidating because without being told what is currently trending they wouldn't know what to buy. Convenience and complacency over compassion and responsibility should not be the way we live... We would only be limiting ourselves and others. It really is modern day slavery. People should know what's going on. btw, love your sweater! And let me guess.. it doesn't pill when you wash it. 😂
Me and my family we love thrifting I own 2 pairs of pants and about 7 shirts from thrifting and probably more stuff
There are litteraly so many SHEIN and temu items in thrift stores. 😢
Growing up I was dirt poor, like super poor. But I went to school in the rich neighborhood cause that’s where my mom taught as a teacher. We would always hit up goodwill on the $1 days, and we dressed well. Like sure we didn’t look rich, but we found good clothes. I haven’t bought clothes, minus work pants when mine ripped, since high school. I actually do need to soon cause i don’t have the body or fashion taste of a teenager anymore, but definitely not touching shein or any fast fashion.
Thank you for talking about this so many people completely ignore the fact that shein uses child labor im glad ur using ur platform for this also the clothes ugly as hell
12:16 i went to a resellers store event day and a t-shirt was 2 euros, a sweater was 3 dollars and a vest was 5 dollars.
i agree, but for example i know people that don’t have money and can’t go trifting because the only trift shops are 40 minutes the way and the transportation is about 8 € on it’s own
Etsy. Depop. Small businesses.
tf, stop making excuses. such a small inconvenience makes you support fast fashion? and it's not even like you need new clothes every month, what exactly is the problem?
I hate shein but I understand why people buy from them because alt fashion is not normally sold at stores and if it is its 60+ dollars for a shirt or pants
i really wish the uk had places like thrift stores/shops, because all we have are charity shops
hiii i’m in the uk :)
i love charity shops, i’ve found some good clothes there!! keep looking :)) there are places that sell curated vintage/second hand clothes so maybe look at those? i find kilo sales are good.
Hey guys maybe shein isn’t good for humanity
Omg finally I always see this online shop called shein and some UA-camrs talk about it as a really good cheap clothing shop but what they don’t know is that they pay the people who make the clothes 3p (3 cence !!!!!!!!!)
In my town there are not many Options
Can someone give me advice where to shop except thrifting because there’s no thrift stores near me
Sometimes I feel like this generation will be the fall of humanity. I don’t know how to stop it but I wish I could, I wish people wouldn’t be so selfish and oblivious to the cruel world we live in. I think this comment will be pointless but I just hope that people will read it and think twice when making purchases. Thank you for reading my comment I hope you understand what I’m trying to say. We should all stick together as members of the human race.
i got a hair thing for like slicked back styles and now i regret it
I bought a pair of shoes for like 34$ and after like a week they started falling apart, I thought it was bc of rough play, but its just the quality
the intro is so true
