210: Musee Studio Borealopelta Scene Statue (2022) Review

  • Borealopelta is probably the best preserved and my favourite nododsaurid. Those haunting images in black and white of the Borealopelta fossil captivated me, and it’s probably one of the very few fossils I would travel to see in person.
    In spite of being so well-known, or perhaps perversely, because of it, very few models have emerged. We had the CollectA, and then PNSO, and now we have this bigger tribute from Musee Studios. At a whopping 1:13 scale, this statue literally leaves nothing to the imagination, and everything, especially the armour, is very well sculpted and represented.
    Together with a good paint application, this one makes my very first Musee Studio offering a truly happy one.
    Hopefully, someone will make a good representation of Zuul the well-preserved ankylosaurid one day!
    Also, you might want to check out Paleonerd’s Borealopelta review here. They are very thorough and dare I say, even more tight than I am when it comes to anatomy.

      It is an extremely awesome fossil for sure! I am sure if you live in the West, you're nearer to it than I am! 😁

    As great as dinosaurs are, I hope pnso also considers more none dinosaur prehistoric animals, given their talent I can imagine some amazing models they'd create depicting animals like giant sea scorpions, entelodonts, terror birds, sabre tooths ect

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  Рік тому +1

      That is absolutely for sure! There is a real dearth of non-dinosaurian prehistoric fauna that if given a good model, would stimulate so much interest. I personally didn't know anything about the rauisuchians or temnospondyls until I saw models or paintings of some. A giant sea scorpion, proboscidean and entelodont are just DYING to be made with PNSO's usual quality!

      It's really amazing. If only the paint application especially the rear half was a shade higher, it would be perfect!

    The most complete and well-detailed video I've ever seen on a figure (I think). And only you, my dear sir can top that with another video like this.😉 Wow. I'm intrigued and amazed at how much effort you put into making these videos. Hats off to you and much respect. I'm sorry it took me this long to watch and praise this, but you know how it is. Please keep up the excellent work my dear sir. Wish you all the best 🖤

      Canada must be closer to you than it is to Asia lol! This is truly an amazing find. Maybe someday someone will do a 3D scan and give us a nice manipulable model to play with!

      @@DinosDragons THAT is an awesome notion! I often play around with 3D T.rex skulls, but I guess B.markmitchelli just isn't as famous enough to warrant it yet. And such a shame, being one of the best preserved dinosaur fossils out there.
      Canada is closer to me - I'm from the UK - but I have the additional dynamic of being a family man with two girls in tow, so holidays (vacations, if you'd prefer) are generally where and what everyone else wants and I just have to roll with it, lol.
      That said, my eldest girl, 10yrs old, does have a great interest in dinosaurs and other prehistoric life. She and I have enjoyed our time visiting the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris, the National Museum of Ireland, Dublin, and of course London's Natural History Museum. We go around the exhibits with keen interest and she asks a LOT of pertinent questions, which is awesome, while my wife and younger daughter sit by glumly as we geek out :)
      Maybe I can convince them that Canada should be our next stop and try to arrange a visit to the Royal Tyrell Museum while we're there...

    DD you do the most amazing and detailed videos! I think some budding paleontologists might be tuning in for some tips! This model is very nice, and such a great review.

      Lol thank you but that is high praise I can't lay claim to! I'm really just a very serious amateur, though I've wanted to do a course for a while. Covid and the sad current world situation has put that out of sight for a few years at least. But thankfully, many of the course textbooks for paleontology are available to study, not to mention plenty of very detailed papers for anyone who loves anatomy, speculative physiology/ behaviour, and recently for me, phylogeny and relationships 😁 This wasn't the case 10-20 years ago, where everything was very hard to get.

    Ive also been thinking of getting this Boreaopelta model and it's very beautiful! Tho I personally Im gonna get MK Studio Rugops. An expensive model but one of those few expensive one of a time things. We all need a lottery win so we can get everything 😂

      True! In fact I feel that if we had the money to buy every single thing we ever wanted, then each is somewhat diminished. But having a few precious gems as cornerstones to a collection is really special!

    amazing figure, im surprised that we got so little accurate reconstructions of borealopelta since we pretty much know almost exactly what it looked like from outside

      I've always wondered... Either they feel it's so boring they can't exercise creativity in form and colour, or they feel it's too restrictive since we know so much? At any rate I'm happy PNSO has given us a good one!

    Splendid review of a most handsome model. Truly an excellent release. I only wish it were in a smaller scale and oddly, CollectA seems to be the sole manufacturer who included the long tail of a Nodosaur. In some animals the caudal vertebrae number in the forty range. Both this and the PNSO are notably conservative. The paint scheme is also particularly better than PNSO’s but, not so much as to compel a purchase.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  Рік тому +1

      You make a good point and indeed, I came to the same conclusion!
      I actually had to take out about 4min comparing this and the PNSO, because it would have made the video too long, and also I realised too few people would even be interested in this for it to be worth.
      But in that deleted segment, I said that unless you really love Borealopelta and want to have a large release to showcase it, given that this is so much bigger and takes up so much space, the colour especially the sacral area is too flat for my liking, and the fact that the PNSO is even more accurate in some respects, I think most people would be very happy with the PNSO. The money saved on this could be used to get the PNSO repainted and elevated to an even higher standard, so this statue isn't one I would really rave about as being in the must-have category.

      The good news is, I don't really think this is a must have unless you really love Borealopelta. There are many other good things you can buy for the money and the space saved for this statue. And as I said, the paint application isn't the most sterling example of what something like this could be! 😅

    The minor inaccuracies are hard to ignore for an expensive piece so I will pass on buying it. PNSO's current version is too small scaled and I hope they remake Borealopelta in the bigger scale.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  4 місяці тому

      I think it's not likely as PNSO seems to be fully focussed on 1:35 scale. I wonder if they will give us larger scale for small animals though. But they have lost interest in anything else it seems.
