    The reason your gun didn’t go off the first time was because your bolt was up and not closed. The gun won’t fire with the bolt in the up position- definitely not a straight up misfire. Thankfully you got a second chance at him. Thanks for sharing this video as it’s a great video to share. Many people assume they miss if they cannot find blood and this is great proof that they don’t always bleed even with near perfect shots. Thankfully you had some snow and video to help confirm that you hit him. 100% certainty that he was hit with that reaction to the shot and how he was running off. Always put in the extra time to search. That happens more often than people think!! Congrats to you on a great buck!

    Real nice buck. I’ve shot 5 deer with my 30-06 in the last 2 years and only one of them had a blood trail. Shot a doe last day of season but couldn’t find her with out any blood. It’s not a problem when they drop in sight or close by but no luck on the last one. It is a bit frustrating but that is hunting. Really glad it all worked out for you. You earned that one 1!

    Congrats to you and Eric, 2 more nice bucks in Maine. Misfires happen at the most important time of the hunt, it just happens that way. By the way you don`t pass on a buck like that with just 2 days to hunt. Unless you want to eat a tag sandwich, we don`t want that. You caught all the deer action to perfection, great self filming. Wishing both of you continued luck the rest of the season.

    Great video. Thanks for sharing. If you watch the video on slow motion of the misfire you can see that the bolt of your rifle is not "in battery." It's not closed all the way. Hey, Crowley. Congratulations to you AND Eric for harvesting good bucks before time ran out on us here in Maine. I passed on a smallish six-pointer in my field, and nothing big ever showed up.
    Are you by any chance using the breed of rifle cartridges that have a plastic insert in the tip of the bullet? I've read the on-line entries of several hunters who have had expansion and blood-trail problems with such ammo (though plenty of other people think these bullets perform just fine). I just thought I'd mention it.
    Ditto your misfire problem. Many years ago, when I had this issue with my Remington 600 .308 carbine, I assumed it was the ammo. But just for the heck of it, I asked a gunsmith to check the firing pin. Sure enough, he said there was just enough wear to cause an occasional misfire. Stay warm this winter! Chris

    • @PineStateHunter
      @PineStateHunter  Рік тому

      Hey Chris thanks, Not using the plastic tips. The gun is a .243 and I just clipped the back of the shoulder. Took the top of the heart off but with no exit hole and a small entrance no blood. If you are still hunting I hope you find a good one.

Anyway we have a range at the camp and season just ended so I got another box of ammunition and fired 8 shells through without a problem. First time I’ve ever had a miss fire with rifle ammunition in 40 years. @PineStateHunter  Рік тому

      This year I planted a summer soil builder mix, (the sorghum was the only thing that survived the heavy browse pressure.) Also planted clover and rye which held up ok. The plot was all wooded. Cleared by hand with just hand tools. Lots of work but it was worth it. Happy holidays.

    • @nhmountains5683
      @nhmountains5683 Рік тому

      Sorghum or Japanese millet may work better if you could plant it separately on the side with less moisture. The deer will leave it alone until those seed heads ripen. If you can get it separately I’d try planting buckwheat along there after your last frost. Just top seed right before a rain. If that grows then spread your brassicas in it in mid late July and mow it. That’ll kill the buckwheat and give the brassicas moisture from the cuttings to get it started.
      know the hard work you’ve put in if you cleared and cut that by hand. I’ve been doing the same thing and it takes time to build the soil and get a good plot. Keep at it.

    Congratulations on your kill. I’m not wanting to critique your hunting skills but why was your gun mounted on your back when you went down to check to see if you got him. I did that once years ago as a young hunter and when I got close to the deer it jumped up and took off. I still think about that mistake on my part to this day.

    • @PineStateHunter
      @PineStateHunter  Рік тому +1

      You have a point David, I've seen deer get up and go after a hard hit. That's one of the draw backs to self filming. You just can't be 100% focused on the hunt and film too. Thank you for watching and the critique.

    That's why I always shoot the AR platform. It never fails, and I can field strip, trouble shoot, re-assemble, and function check it in the pitch black.
    Only accidental discharge I've ever had was a Remington 710 that would fire upon releasing the safety.
    I hunt deer with a .308 and a .300blk depending on terrain.

      @@PineStateHunter I determined, if safety was engaged and trigger was touched, even just from some brush...then switch the safety off and it fired. I quickly sold it to a gun dealer after telling him of it's fault. He said that was common with the 710. First and last Remington I ever bought.

    I had a misfire once on a buck that was charging me after using a grunt call. I’d seen the buck move into the swamp. I slipped on the snow and fell going down over the bank into the swamp and didn’t realize the bolt was jarred up when I hit. I grunted, waited a bit and grunted again waited and the third time I heard crashing to my left, turned to look and there he was running at me with his head down. I remember my jaw dropping open and then thinking I better shoot ! I took aim and “click”. Pulled the trigger again and “click” again. At that point he realized it was me and turned and ran about 70 yards away and stopped and all I could see was his neck. I chambered another shell and aimed at his neck, shot 3 times and missed before he ran off for good. I couldn’t believe what had happened. I decided I’d better check the scope before doing anymore hunting and sure enough it also had been knocked off when I fell. Now I look back on it and laugh and say “good for him !”

    I have shot a number of deer without leaving blood trails. Shooting center of the deer, as in height, all the blood stays inside. I shot a doe that ran 200 yards in an open field only to pile up at the edge. When dressed out, there were no lungs, only soup, and some clots.
