HOW MUCH FIREWOOD DO I HAVE AND SELL?

- People want to know how much wood I have and how much do I sell each year! I get asked this by viewers of the channel in the comments and from my firewood customers ALL the time! Today I will explain this complex and difficult question in detail!
Never work a day in ya life if ya enjoy what ya doing . Like you I can’t wait to get to the Woodyard every morning and get after it .
And it's always more fun with friends.
I am the same way between Mazda's and Firewood 😉👍
Yup, very good point Mr. Phil!
Yup!
It is good for a person to have a purpose that you like!
Chris, I’m assuming your Tundra is a 2014 and probably paid 32-35K for it. Wait till you see the current prices: double that to 60-70K. Wait till 2025 model since the new V6 engines in 2023 - 2024 are blowing up and they have a safety recall to replace 100K engines. Or try to find a used 2020 or 2021 with low miles. They still that reliable V8 engine.
2015 253k miles paid $32k...it has been awesome but...I will not buy a new one..to many problems and not a v8....I will probably get a New Ford F250 OR A Chevy 2500???
Your secret ingredient is you have a real team player of a wife Chris. All these years watching you toil and I think she must really appreciate it and encourage you to reach your potential. A needy wife would have gotten in the way. You hit the lotto with her
You are right, she works as hard as I do in my other business. Yup, we are in year 40 ...wish we could do it all over again..time goes fast!
I really like hearing about your Firewood story from over all the years. I’m also very interested in the Firewood business. Everything from the Chainsaws to the log splitters and the trailers. Great videos I’ve been watching for a very long time. Keep up the hard work.
Thanks so much for watching!
This is the first day in some time that the humidity wasn't stifling. I have not hardly cut any wood in weeks. I feel better tonight than I have for weeks. I did a tote of pine and 2 totes of maple today. I had a new chain on my Echo 590 and it was fun. I love to cut and split wood. Tundra isn't even broken in yet. I have put 400,000 miles on five Toyota trucks and I give them away and the people drove it for 5-7 more years but I maintain them.
It's about 62 here. this evening we had a high of 67 today!!! ..nice
My body is shot from my career so now I just work slower on my property. You have to keep moving! Just got a new knee and I’m getting around pretty good now. Just in time for hunting season!
Yup, hard work and time can take its toll.
Hi Chris, Just an FYI, I've had to re subscribe for the third time today. Hope you're fantastic.
Welcome back! Sorry about that...I have no idea why youtube does that????
Great story Chris. When I was starting out it was similar. Coal/wood stove. Getting the fuel in for my mum when I was six or seven. Getting my first chainsaw at thirteen. Part timing firewood (while working 12hr shifts at a pulpmill /sawmill) found firewooding fitted in well with shift work. Ended up with good saws, good truck and payed for my own heating at home for forty yrs. Love watching your journey Chris. Great video. Cheers from HB NZ
Very cool story! Thanks!
Irene is proud of what you have accomplished. Congratulations on being successful 👍👍👍
Thanks!
I just don't get how you can work 30 hours a week as a photographer, then producing 200 full cords a year, then filming and editing the videos, then uploading 1 video per day (maybe you're not the one doing this?), then answering all comments in every video?
What in the actual f 🤣
That's the spirit Chris, just incredible!
I do not watch TV or any sports, or news.I hate sitting around doing nothing in particular, my kids are grown and gone....I love to work at all the things I do every day.
Hey Chris! Great visit to the channel today! I always enjoy the sit an chat videos with you and hearing your stories! I really appreciate the time you’ve taken over the years to share your knowledge with us, I know for a fact I have learned an absolute ton from your channel and I can’t wait to get started at my own woodyard someday in the future! It’s not in my cards yet.. but it will be 😊. Thanks again Chris! We’ll see you tomorrow! Andrew from NB :)
Awesome! Thank you! ....Today is all you have ...do it now....start.
Chris your work ethic is inspiring! Great video!!
Thanks for watching!
I just started. I have an 8-lb maul and a Husq 455 Rancher. Pretty much use a Honda Ridgeline(we have a Pilot). Hearing your story is inspiring. I am a BBQ guy and recently switched to all wood. Ordered some online and paid a fortune. Figured I might be able to start an operation. Had a great week oak, maple and black cherry. I know what I have to do. Keep cuttin!
AWESOME...get to it!
Thanks Chris great video, and yes I agree dry pine she be fine.lol
Thanks 👍
I am the same way with firewood.
I want to produce more, but with the time i have a year, i am maxed out. I still enjoy it too😉👍
Yup, do what you can!
Thanks for sharing your story in one video Chris! Love your work ethic and share your "addiction" to "keep cutting more wood". My wife has also asked me when enough is enough! 😂
Thanks for watching!
We are in an old stone farmhouse where i used to burn 6 full cords per year in a woodstove. A hundred years ago there were FIVE open fireplaces in the house. I could not imagine burning that much freakin' wood every year. Now they are mostly walled up. And now I'm an outdoor boiler user and love it. GNI, don't be a turd.
5 is a lot of fireplaces!
Hi Chris. How nice to see how your wood making has developed over the years. I have been following you since the beginning and when I see how the wood is being processed now, I sometimes think back to the Glacier with nostalgia. Such thoughts make it extra clear what a beautiful development has taken place in the Woodyard. Thank you for letting us experience that too.
Thanks so much for watching!

Thanks for watching.
Wow you have a great market. I am retired and have time to enjoy the firewood chore but doubt I could make much profit from it in SW Va. I used to work 80-100 hours a week raising a family but didn't enjoy as much as you do. You Tube seems like a good fit with your personality and talents.
You can do it if you want to...thanks for watching!
Great video Chris. Bert, Gavin, and Adam are a great group of guys as well and definitely have the same drive and work ethic. Keep up the great work and videos. GNI 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks!! Yes, they all are great guys!
Back from a quick vacation at Lake George in upstate NY. I haven’t been up that way since the kids were little. What a difference in terms of economic development and still very beautiful and peaceful at the lake resort. I enjoyed your “ pyro” story…. I’m sure dad took care of business 😂. Regards
Welcome back! Thanks for watching!
Love the talks! I feel the same I can't wait to get to the wood yard it's what I work so hard to get to! Don't know what I'm doing that day sometimes I just know I'm doing something!
You can do it! Just keep moving!
I love being active so doing firewood fits right into my enjoyment! Great stories Chris!! GNI
Same for me!
We had over four hundred full cords brought in last winter and we processed all that, now we had another four hundred brought in since the weight restrictions came off in may and most of that is dry enough so we’re working on that now and our contractors are starting to haul a couple truckloads a week to start building our inventory for next year. Our trucks here hold between 16-18 cords-legally! Lol! GNI
Nice work! That is a bunch of wood! Keep cuttin'!
That's awesome you're in Appleton, I'm in shawano and I grew up in Menasha. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! Will do!
It’s not work to me either! Cant wait to get home from work to do firewood! 😂 Good talk Chris. 👍🏻👍🏻GNI
Work is play!
If you have to ask then you can't afford it. Kenny from Western North Carolina
Some times yes.
Good Morning!
Hello Ron!
Hello!
G’morning Chris. Yikes, you need MOOOORRRRE !! Get contributing. GoodNightIrene
Whats the average cost of a truck load of logs of hardwood
It depends on the kind and size of the load but $1400-1600 is average.
My parents bout a house that was built in I think 1930. Nothing much to talk about a small 4 bedroom but it had a stone fireplace that most people loved when they came to our house. We went through maybe 25 full cords of wood a year. It was costly even though we was getting the wood for free and we did not use any power tools it was all done by hand with buck saws and axes. The cost was the time it was taking us because we had to cut all year long plus in the spring time work on our gardens.
With the Fireplace going I could take a glass of water and lay it by my bedroom window upstairs and by morning it was solid ice. Yes we were freezing using the fireplace. Then a man that knew my dad told him to hook up a wood-stove Well we did and OMG we could not believe the heat we were getting . There was times we had to open the door to let the heat out. There was times we even had to open the windows to let the heat out.
The wood-stove made a huge difference's in our lives. Not only did he have all the heat we needed but we was burning a lot less wood. We sold that house in 79 and by 1980 the house had a fire. I assume the owners never had the fireplace cleaned . Never thought I would say this but I do miss that house and the land it was sitting on.
Thanks for the nice story and for watching!!
@@InTheWoodyard anytime my friend.
I produce 20 cords of firewood per year harvesting the wood myself, and make hay off of a 20 acre field. The hay making is by far more stressful with the anxiety of rain. Both commodities need to be dry however the hay is much more perishable and needs to be sheltered. Making hay is of course done in sunny and hot conditions and not done at my convenience. Making fire wood is easier, less stressful, less machine maintenance/repair and selling firewood has a much larger market for customers. Over all I enjoy firewood more than hay.
Yup, you are one of a few viewers that has told me that...get cuttin'!
Nice video Chris. Firewood production is usually something that results in a peaceful sense of accomplishment where at the end of the day you can see the results of your hard, honest work and have a happy, tired body. GNI
Yes yes yes!
Great video!! Thanks for the insight to my favorite channel!! Stay Hydrated and Have a Safe Day
Thanks for watching!
Nice biography of your up-bringing Professor. Quite simular of mind. Must be why I really like your vids. Have lots of stories also to remember but care not to visualize. 9 outta 10 Professor. Wooda, dida, lovva. The End.😊
Thanks!
Watch your site on a daily schedule as I'm a retired person of 77 years.. I do have an issue with the gear you receive from manufacturers . Your becoming a sales person for these companies and I'm of the opinion that's not good for you channel. More interplay with your brother Ken doing wood related activities is always good for some laughs. I like the way he straight talks to issues no fuss. Your best move was actually your relocation of your woodyard, that was a smart move. so long from Canada, Nova Scotia on the far east Atlantic coast, just up the coast from Boston.
If you would pay me for the videos I would do exactly what you want... what you see is free...these companies give me tools in exchange for my time and efforts to try them out so that you know if they are good for you or not to purchase that is why many others watch....to hear the truth about products...it is the way that works better for everyone involved ...product makers, testers like me and consumers like you to know what products are good bad or ugly. I spend 4-8 hours a day EVERY day on making videos for everyone to watch for FREE and have for over 4 years now and if my getting a few products for other to see being used for producing firewood on a firewood channel does not work for some..I am sorry.
Great chat. 👍🏻👋
Thanks!
Good morning Chris!!😀😀
Hello Al!
Hi Chris nice video have a good day ( Ty Ron Hi Jean
Thanks!!!
The same as; Why you never ask a farmer how many cows are in his herd; as how much firewood is in your inventory; as; how much money is in your bank account. Good overview of the scaling up of business.
Man is made to do more.
Trees.... the greatest recycled, physical therapy, mental therapy product on this big ole round ball!!
So satisfying once you understand trees from sapling to ashes, birds, bugs, varmits, cover, leaf shed=dirt, wood used for many things and physical exercise to process , and mental therapy to sit and enjoy the crackling and smell.... heat... Good Stuff Chris!
Yup, wood is good!
I really enjoyed that video, thanks for sharing your life with us. Only problem is we're the same age and hearing what you do everyday i feel like a lazy slug lol.
Thanks for watching...just keep moving!
I think you need to add motivational speaker to the resume. I guarantee I’m not the only one that takes inspiration from you.
I have a hard time motivating myself!
If it wasn't for the processor, would you be starting to slow down on firewood production? A processor definitely extends the high volume firewood selling stage of life!
Maybe ...or I would work harder.
@InTheWoodyard or develop the brand into making bbq chips to sell across state lines via mail-order. Make a lot more $ per cord than firewood does. I'd buy "In The Woodyard" brand of smoker chips.
Never enuff wood! Always need and want more!,
Yup, more is the right number!
Chris,Benjamin’s are nice 👍 to have but extra bennys are much better 😮😊❤
Yes but...more time would be even better!
Hey Chris, question for you about your photography side of things. I'm mainly a wedding photographer, coming up on shooting my 40th wedding in a few weeks. How did you avoid burning out doing all the editing in a timely manner, post event while also doing firewood? I find myself, especially in the past few years wanting to spend more time outside doing my firewood, than I want to be in front of the computer, but I love doing the photography still. I've got so much wrapped up in photography equipment as I'm sure you know the cost of good glass comes at a premium, but I find myself wanting more and more to just sell off some of the extra gear and expand the firewood side of things.
I started full time professional photography in 1982 and I did over 500 weddings and yes it ain't easy! They where the first thing I quit doing and then specialized in only portrait work and contract work (schools/sports) in about 2012-ish I do not miss weddings...AT ALL!
Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing this video Chris always good information,, this Friday in the wood yard we are reaching 110 today,🔥🔥 have a great afternoon and weekend..
More!
Yup, my favorite number!
Good morning all!
Hello!
More😊
That is my favorite number.
That split alder should be getting dry by now. About the time its ready to burn, its just about starting to rot.
.
The others not so much.
Yup, all the wood is drying well this year again!
341,000 on my tundra, runs like new!
Nice! I am now at 254,000 I have a long way to go to catch you!
You split those first 13 cords by hand??
I’m thinking about getting into the business but I thought I would need to buy a splitter
I have a fiskars maul and a husky 545 rancher. I’ve split up maybe 4 cords in my life
Charlotte NC area
Yes. Thanks for watching!
ive been debating for a year now to just order a truck load of logs but around here they range from 850-1100.00 per truck and they all say its anywhere from 8-10 cords worth of wood but it is getting harder to find decent wood to go cut. Right now Im being fed from a guy who had over 600 trees taken and he brings the tops to a landing which is awesome but I have to cut and drag the limbs to a pile so it's exhausting and last time it took me about 3-4 hours to bring home about 2 cords (its 30 minutes away, each way). I also have a buddy who buys standing timber and he's got me on a 10-15 acre track with nothing but cherry and hard maple so Ill be cutting for probably 2 years but again its 45 minutes away and my 16ft dump trailer can only hold about 2 coords so is it even worth it.
It depends on what your market is and how much wood you can sell. I would and do both, buy wood and get free stuff too!
How much wood do you sell a year?
Enough...I hope!
Chris I been thinking 🤔, you will have to double your firewood 🪵 sale to buy a new TUNDRA truck come soon 🔜 😮. Lol . I had a good morning got to replace to front semi logging tire 🛞 my price $4455.73 set . Take two full load of firewood 🪵 just for 2 tires 🛞. Them big wide off road tire crazy now , Covid pricing still on the go up 🔝 here , got 35% off still a high price . Got to make money 💴 to spend money . Remember semi are like women always in want 😊sorry lady out there lol . 😢😢
Yup, prices always go up but not down...
Doesn't Matter it's not enough.
More is better.
When you retire from photography are you selling your business and building or just building?
Just the building, the business would be hard to sell without me and my wife.
Ive heard people on UA-cam say let oak dry up to 2 years but I split oak in March and I put a moisture meter on it last week and it was at 20%. What gives?
Lots of things are possible....Was it from a live (green) tree or a dead standing one? Was the bark off? How thin was it split, thinner dries faster. Has the sun been hitting THAT piece all the time with wind on it all the time. Was it from the inside or bottom of the pile/stack?? Did you use the meter on the outside or did you split it in half and test the INSIDE....Very interesting..let me know the specifics of the test piece...so I can tell others about it...Thanks!
69 and 70 I was in the US Marines in Viet Nam I am now well ahead of that time and have a couple of firewood bins built one full and one new one.
Nice...keep movin' and cuttin'!
🤘
Thanks!!!
Good Morning Woodhounds!!(--:
Hello!
You said you work 100 hours a week. You’re married. Has Mrs Woodward ever tell you that you work too many hours and she’d like you to spend more time at home? My wife would be after me to slow down and spend more time with her and at home.😁
Yup, but also I do not watch ANY TV sports or news ...she runs our main business, our kids are grown and gone... I can't sit around wasting time watching other people doing...I would rather be doing, she is the same....
Pyromania never goes away, firewood and burning firewood helps keep it under control..........extremely satisfying!!! BWAHAHAHA!!!!
Yup, sitting by our outdoor fire right now answering comments!
Great video Chris, thanks for sharing. Just think, you could have been a full time arsonist, if you had followed your childhood exploits; instead you are the master of entertainment, photography and wood
Very true! Thanks!
You have a lot of wood. To bring home the Benjamins.
Yup, it is a good start!
You seem like you like trapping too
Yes and hunting too!
That Toyota Tundra has served you well, and saved lots of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Have you seen what parts cost now or pickups???
Yup, I am not much of a parts guy, I will probably get a new truck this year...
@@InTheWoodyard Are ya gonna trade in the Tundra or sell it or just keep it around for a spare?
