It is underrated because back in 2008 everyone played CoD2 and CoD4. CoD2 players pretty much stick to cod2. About singleplayer- people were tired of ww2 games because there were too many of them. World At War 2 mission 1 - Invasion of Manchuria: Japanese private Sadou Mow has been deceived into thinking he will liberate fellow Asians from the white man, when infact he quickly learns it was an act of expansion. Next -missing- mission will take place with the invasion of Poland.
right like with blackout, everybody wanted a campaign but they went with battle royale because fortnite was doing it. call of duty is only call of duty with good campaign and good zombies. I mean every game has multiplayer, but very few games could pull off campaigns like in WaW and black ops 1 , now the game is starting to suck because they don't put much effort into campaign. and while the story zombies is cool I personally just like how it was with BO1, run around with good guns, find some rocks, and kill everything that moves until you get over run

As for cold war, I also didn't like the logical inconsistencies in cold war (some "black ops" missions in cold war would definitely escalate the cold war to an actual war), so it also felt disrespectful towards the conflict as well, but the story was again so captivating on its own. But in order to best enjoy those games, you need to appreciate the campaigns outside of the real world context in which they were produced

This was one of the best and last times a WW2 game was done right. The story, the music, the characters, etc. All of it done so well to encapsulate a doomed, gritty and bloody time in human history. There were some games that tried to get close like Battalion 1944's War-torn system. But in the end W@W just had it all combine. Call of Duty and Battlefield's return to WW2 today is a left down to what a masterpiece this game is.
I have been playing Cod for years. This was the first game I played at 5 years old on my ps3 and I literally get chills hearing this even more so now that I can look back and appreciate the efforts they put in and how detailed and utterly moving the story was. I’ve played every other game in the series from this game until now and all I can say is I wish I could’ve had the talent to maybe go pro then and not now

When I played this mission I couldn’t help but feel admiration for the last Germans who held the Reichstag to the bitter end. Obviously the Nazis were evil and had to be dealt with, but I admire the bravery of the German soldiers. They sure as hell didn’t go out with a whimper.

Still my favorite cod out of any of them. Close second is mw2. The campaign is S tier, online was great (like every cod before Bo2) and it’s where ZOMBIES started. It may not be best but it’s definitely a cornerstone in video game history
