Besides Drake who only half counts anyway, Kendrick was the biggest star in rap for a long time. The south had more national artists than the west, but the biggest star has been Kendrick. Part of it is also because like Texas, you can be rich & successful without expanding out of California. but we also are sort of beyond the days of one region having the ball in their court, at least until regionality in music comes back.

I can definitely say that west coast hip hop has not resurrected. If anything, we have regressed back to being stagnant to the same era before Kendrick, the Top Dawg label , YG, and Nipsey came along. Certain artists you’ve mentioned haven’t broke out outside of the west. Ever since Roddy cooled down, we’ve been down on our ass as a coast ever since. Who knows if its gonna get better.. but i hope it does.
