Whoever is doing the mixing and tech setup for this podcast is doing great job btw. The sound is super clear and well balanced. Good choices for camera angles too. It's not easy, and even a lot of music focused creators get it wrong.
I got to tell you... I've been playing music my whole life well since I was three and I'm 70 now so a long time. I so wish I was in the room with you guys... I'm in a band now, and except for making music it's a slog. All the promotion and management and non-music-related aspects are just crushing the life out of it. I know you guys have to do all that stuff too. But seeing two guys just enjoying playing music together the way I've done my whole life is a treat. I applaud you
I find composition mind boggling. Herbie said Donald Byrd told him to come up with chords first and melody latter. Jimmy Heath said modern songs aren't melodic and we should come up with melodies first. Wayne whould write complete songs in a sitting. Monk wrote amazing songs and could make standards sound like he wrote them. I was told by a older musician when i was young that musicians that don't compose get forgotten. It's hard trying to come up with something that doesn't sound like something I've heard. This was great to experience.
Please let this be a recurring episode theme! It’s not just the amazing music created but how you two do it with minor cuts, scrapes or bruised egos! ❤
42:50 this whole section till the end gave me chills, the way they spontaneously decide to dig a little cavern into that ending section just because it feels so good, relentless stank and feeling.
I've been a professional composer and teacher for 30+ years (and my dad was a composer and jazz pianist and worked with a number of the "heavys" in his day), and I always learn something new when I watch the two of you - not to mention the joy of music making. Thanks for this!
Good lord. So much joy. So much creativity. Just two guys having the best time, the best banter, casually writing a superb tune together. Love it! Goosebumps.
I'm glad y'all kept the intro in, that cracked me up. This was really cool to watch, sometimes collaborating can be intimidating or doesn't go smoothly so it was cool to see the legends at work
Hear the leaves in the storm; Heaven breathes in their song Spinning in the autumn wind, they are fallin’. And still, there is one holdin’ on Caught up in the current, it turns and twists just barely holdin’ by a thread. Caught up in this moment, I watch it sadly, madly holdin’ in my breath Spinning in the crazy wind, things are fallin’. But, I just can’t help holdin’ on
@@daveincalgary1205 Thanks Dave in Calgary! Hope you're getting enough water. I'm Beth in Nanaimo. Made my day. I don't usually post. I'd love to hear it sung.
Came here from Spotify just to follow along with the sheet music. This is incredible! Next episode, I would love to see an explanation what went through your head with some of these decisions, especially with the choice of harmony. Long live the GALA!
It is often thought that musicians have super powers, and it is true that some talent come with it... but... it is all hard work put into music that makes you reach that level. It is amazing and I have to say that the entire channel's mood makes, at least me, feel great. Lovely guys! I wish I had what it takes to reach that level of writing, reading, and interpreting music skills. May the Jazz be with you!
As much as I love the software demo, and I really want some composition software for myself, I really believe you could have written this thing much faster with pencil and manuscript paper - even with correcting mistakes and then copied the completed written manuscript into the software in the same period of time that it took you to write it directly into the software. BUT…I get that this was necessary for visually showing us the composition process with excellent clarity, before our very eyes. Truth be told, I don’t want to tell you what other tunes I hear, I don’t want to search for other tunes. This is unique. Example: If George Harrison knew he was re-writing “He’s So Fine” in the moment he was writing it, we’d never have his very awesome song “My Sweet Lord”. Truth be told, I only hear FROM MOO TO YOU and it’s bringing sizzle to the gorgeous! 🥰🔥😍😎👍🏽
You Guys did Great! I grew up on Jazz...I hardy had 9 Months of Being Taught piano over 40 years ago...yet Thank you for your great report with each other...Great Composition!
Deciding when to keep it in the pocket and when to open it up a bit more... fantastic blend! Definitely Bob James with the Rhodes sound and melodic phrasing, Kirk Franklin and some gospel influence... It's the first time in a long time that I'm sitting back and calling out chords and you're making many of those changes... It was such a creative space with purpose because you were under the gun with time. Great exercise, guys! You work so well together and appreciate the different influences. My wife was like, "what are you getting so excited about?" "It's the joy in this process!" IDEA 1): For a composition exercise, what if you took an artist, a key and did something like this in that vein but with requests from the audience? Be really fun. Little more prep, but still! Or IDEA 2) from a harmonic state, have someone send in the melody and write 3 or 4 harmonic variations on the melody AKA Jacob Collier's harmonic series. From a skill level and understanding, you are both "Geniuses of Joyful Expression." Thanks for sharing that with the rest of the world.
Can you guys make a video to analyze this song, what’s the concept behind the chord progression like Abm Em Cm Am Fm? It’s so interesting to see insights behind this song. It may be a great knowledge for composition.
Already playing off the lead sheet on the video in the last five hours and love the vibe especially the moving inner voices at the end of the A section.
I hope live composing will become a new thing on yt now! It was so fresh and enjoyable. Also, I can't get this tune out of my head now! I agree with other commenters, that it'd be so great to hear about the thought process.
Just wow, internet jazz magic! How much fun was this, watching Adam and Peter set this mad challenge then make it happen, a compositional sprint right up to the wire! Adam, "We really wasted that first twenty seconds!", as his tech collapses at the end. Of course it did, lol! But still got it done. What a blast, what a ride! Peter and Adam, thank you so much for this epic demonstration! Next up, building a full band arrangement in 30 minutes??
The BEST Laugh Ever!! Peter! Adam honors you with Such a Laugh! I'd take it like that! Friends for many years!? Awesome! Now I trust you both even more! Good Medicine!
I loved this so much. Listened on Spotify twice and watched on YT once. Haha! I say record this with bass and drums and maybe a horn and make it your theme song. Nothing against the current theme song. Love that, but how cool would it be to have a new theme song every year that is created this way. Make it an annual thing?
I was certainly thinking of a Bob James influence, soon after you started. So when you mentioned it at the end I gave myself a smart arse pat on the back 🙂. Seriously though, great work guys.
🤣👍🏽 Wasn’t that the cutest thing. He’s that kid will lose the “Let’s see who can be quiet the longest!” Contest. 🤣🤣🤣 Oooooh yeah…he’s got a lot on his mind! That’s why I love him. 🤫🗣️
Just for fun. The melody of this song inspired the image of leaves twirling, falling in the wind. Here's my stab at a lyric. The B Section would be a challenging melody to sing, but.... Anyone else game??? Thanks for the continued inspiration Adam and Peter. This is so good!!
Oh my. I'm sweating watching this. My Thanks to You 🙏
Bob James, Norah Jones, with a little Herbie's "Tell Me a Bedtime Story" - enjoyed the content!

Awesome!! Thanks!
Earworm. Beautiful.
Of course! You are both greatly talented so duh!
This is great❤
Exciting to watch!
I'm really starting to admire you guys 😄👍🏼
This is just amazing!
Great stuff, the start reminds me of Curtis Mayfield's People Get Ready
this is so fun!!
Taxi meets “just the way you are”
brilliant - couldnt place what the ending riff remind me of
This was the funniest and most charming intro to date
Beautiful !
Maybe it's just the keyboard voicing, but I definitely heard Taxi back in there somewhere. Nice!
The key is the dibi-dabi-doobi-doo thingie
Singing, yes.
I’m no where near you guys but I love what you do , and if some how I can play 50% what you play I will be very happy 😂
That was FUN!
Plus, I looked up "mu chord" and learned something.
Take the finished track. Add drums, strings, and some winds, and brass.
And a Female vocalist😊
Lets Go Open Studio

This literally made me cry
Yes!
This intro will NEVER get old, what’s the song? Is it out on all platforms or whattt

What a nice Journey gentlemen...get work !
Thanks
Love the banter at the start 😂
Bridge lick and chords have serious Russell Ferrante vibes.
I love this idea 💡 I hear accents of Chick Corea. You should do that again with other genres. Swing, bebop, bossa, ...
Sick video

So inspiring dudes…
These guys are amazing musicians and players. Its such a shame that modern music has devalued those kind of skills.
What is that synth tone and how can I replicate it? It’s beautiful.
Are you talking about the sound Adam uses? That's a fender rhodes sound.
❤ I use staffpad. What is the advantage of Sibelius?
Great tune and video, but four dotted quavers in a row?! We need to see the beats and the division of the bar! Get yo’ ties out!
