Sarde (noun), [Sa-r-de]: A colloquial term used in the Middle East to describe the act of letting go & kicking off a stream of consciousness and a rambling narrative.
The Sarde After Dinner Podcast is a free space based out of the heart of Beirut, Lebanon, where Médéa Azouri & Mouin Jaber discuss a wide range of topics (usually) held behind closed doors in an open and simple way with guests from all walks of life.

I agree. Its beautiful to know about other cultures. Sometimes you find a lot of similarities surprisingly though, and the differences are also beautiful because they let you reflect on yourself and your culture and maybe improve it when you see fit.

As a lebanese christian with a lot of good muslim friends, I am grateful to learn more about Islam. Perhaps instead of (or alongside) using laws to hold sunni or shia or christian or any religion accountable for religious persecution, another way to do this is to fund local community based cultural work, education and local institutions to work on reconciliation programs, whether in Saudi or Lebanon or anywhere in the Arab world, thus creating a healthy space of dialogue between all sects. Offering a space for reconciliation through arts and cultural programs is, in my opinion, the best way to create real social change and liberate ourselves from the oppression that separates us and isolates us. Laws create more conditions for isolation and hate in some cases. People want to heal, but we need to start by creating that common space after so many years of hatred, oppression, manipulation and inequality
In Islam, non Muslims have their own religious courts. Killing the killer, cutting the hand of a thief who steals as a job (not a poor person stealing to eat), etc... All of these laws are only applied on Muslims, not everyone. In fact, the jizya (or the tax) is paid only by rich people (except women, kids, priests the sick, the poor) and that's in return for services like protection, medical services, independance of non Muslim courts, exemption from military service etc... That's something many non Muslims don't know actually. For example, when Omar Ibn Al Khattab freed Jerusalem from the Romans, he gave the Christians of Jerusalem these services as well as an additional one which was Jews not living next to them (Since at that time there was enmity between Jews and Christians due to what Romans did to Jews and Jews did to Christians in the past).

I am a big fan of your podcasts, which I followed from Tunisia with great attention, and which I continue to follow with interest from France.
I would like to respond to a particular point concerning this video mentioned at 1:07:45.
The Tunisian revolution of 2011 was intended to end an unjust and corrupt dictatorial regime that lasted more than 20 years and not to clear the way for a particular ideology to take "power".
The road to economic and political stability and the establishment of a strong democracy is not without difficulties. The road seems to be long and no criterion is accepted by the Tunisian people except their government's competence.
I hope that we will succeed one day, and that my Tunisia, my beloved country, will be and will remain a model country to follow, modern and progressive.
All my encouragement for your efforts and work for this alternative media that we really need in order to deconstruct the archaic ideas that prevent our union, so that we can one day move forward together and evolve.

The topic is super interesting, but I felt like the subject was rather treated superficially and the guest kind of kept repeating the same ideas with a secular "flavor" over and over. It would be nice to see someone with expertise in Islamic matters in terms of doctrine and history give an in-depth view of the subject.

هو كاتب و صحفى و استاذ " بالإسلام الكيوت "
العنوان الأنسب للحلقة هو " مدخلك إلى الإسلام الكيوت بـ ساعة و نصف من دون معلم "
كلامي مو معناه انو لازم يكون الشخص متشدد , و إنما لما بدك تحكي عن دين معين جيب متديّن و عالم في آن معاً
حتى ممكن تجيب ضيفين و يعملوا مناظرة لطيفة بجو لطيف ..
بس يكونوا معتنقين الدين و يعرفوا يعبروا عن دينهن و يحكوا كمان عن التشدد اللي جاية من سوء الفهم بعدها

Amazing Sarde. The Arab Islamic civilization is in a desperate need for that type of wisdom, open mindedness and courage to separate Islam (and all other sects) from Law and State. Lebanon should be the pioneer of creating a country that respects all beliefs, encourages spirituality while confining religions to the personal choice, to the mosques and the churches. Accepting in the Middle East that one cannot impose his religious beliefs on the others, would be a giant step towards progress. Removing the sectarian fear and division is the only path to obtain decent inclusive leadership. Whoever asks for removal of sectarianism without embracing this secular stance is by definition just trying to seize power and oppress the minorities.

I have been watching your Podcast since about 2 years, always you have been magnificent with your choice of guests, but this time I think not.
Is this really the right guy to talk about how to understand Islam? I think not.
In my opinion, to be able to understand the other party, you need to represent him with someone who is already in that party.
Your guest gives a clearness about how to be a Secular Muslim which does not match your Headline for this episode. And actually, in his way, he is sort of extremist.
To understand Islam I would recommend "Mohammed Rateb al-Nabulsi" who is a Syrian writer, professor, and Islamic scholar.
By the way, I am Christian.

نشر كلمة العلمانية بعد ما لوثت بشكل كبير هو خطأ تسويقي للفكرة .. يجب تغيير الكلمة بنشر كلمة "المساواة بين المواطنين" التي هي لب العلمانية. الانسان لايستطيع ان يرفض كلمة المساواة .
كتاب دراسات في الملل و النحل كتاب موضوعي علمي منهجي صح ..
موضوع الاندماج أمر مركب جدا، اي يحتاج لعدة عمليات مجتمعية ليتحقق.
عملية الاندماج لا يمكن أن تتم من طرف واحد لان هناك طرفان لهذه العملية.
أنا أعتقد ان المجتمعات الاوروبية متفاوتة في قبولها للاندماج وهذا ينطبق ايضا على المهاجرين.
ولكن عادة ما يتم احتواء الطرف الاكبر للطرف الاصغر. وهذا للأسف لا يحصل لان المجتمعات الأوروبية لاتريد أن تغير في هويتها (وهذا من حقهم) كما أن الارث الذي يحمله المهاجرون ليس هو حكايات قبل النوم انه هويتهم وجزء من ذاكرتهم.
لا أعتقد اليوم أن احد استطاع ان يندمج ١٠٠٪ في مجتمعه الجديد حتى على مستوى الجيل الثالث والرابع. لانني كما قلت سابقا ان المعادلة تحتاج موافقة الطرفين، وهنا الطرف الاكبر لا يريد او لا يقبل اندماج اي اعراق او جنسيات داخل مجتمعه، لعدة اسباب دينية، عرقية، اصولية…..الخ.
انا اعتقد ان القانون فقط من يضمن استمرار حياة المهاجرين ويجعلهم جزء من المجتمع ولا يهم كثيرا ماذا يطلق على هذا الاسم ان كان جالية مهاجرون أو مواطنون من اصول غير اوروبية.
اكبر مثال على عدم قدرة المجتمعات على عدم قدرة المهاجرون على الاندماج هو المجتمع الامريكي ما زالوا حتى اليوم يسموا اصحاب البشرة السمراء بالافروامريكان او اللاتينو امريكان.
نهاية اعتقد ان الحل للتخلص من ظاهرة الهجرة ان ترفع أوروبا وامريكا يدها عن البلاد النامية ولا تدعم الديكتاتوريات وبذلك انا أضمن انه لن يخرج أحد من بلده. لا يمكن معالجة الخطأ بخطأ اكبر.
