    10 rounds, watch boxing for the featherweight title! Sub $100 everyday watch. The conventional wisdom says Seiko all the way, but is it actually as good as 'they' (they being Hodinkee) say? Let's find out, shall we?! Cheers, Jody

    I recognize the shortfalls of the 7s (no hacking/hand winding) and the bracelet it comes with is (as you say) completely un-useable. But in my day-to-day life at the office, my SNKL23 gets more wrist time than pretty much any other watch I wear combined. I've owned it for years and I still find myself staring at it all the time. I don't need second accuracy in an office job, and a black horween leather strap really sets it off. The dial on the seiko is absolutely gorgeous with the applied indexes and brand logo as well as the texture on the outer edge is amazing. If I could ever do a custom job, I'd put a hacking movement like a 6r in an SNLK23 and call it a day. Such a wonderful piece!

    Nice fun review. Regardless of the material specification I would take the Seiko every time - I do think, however, that Seiko really need to up their specs these days in light of the cheaper better specced competition around- they are not the value/quality proposition they used to be.

      @Marcquise White the cadisen literally has a seiko movement inside. The hardware is exceptional. What are you complaining about? the letters on the dial? So you're the kind of person who'll pay $3000 for a laptop because it says APPLE ?

    • @henryettoit897

      @Marcquise White lmao why would I even pay more for the name Nike? its just a name. A good shoe is a good shoe, a good watch is a good watch. I dont care it says reebok or new balance or nike. You focus too much on the name when you should judge the product BY ITSELF. It may say seiko on the dial but the bracelet is horrible. (like mosty seiko bracelets) A lot of microbrands use seiko or miyota movements, even "western" watch brands.

    I have both of these watches… Jody is spot on when he says the bracelet on the Seco ‘sucks !’...When you order it make sure you order a nice leather band to go along with it… Finish is outstanding...Nicer than watches that I have that cost three $3-400...The cadisen slit is so shiny but I personally believe it cheapens the look of the watch considerably… They are both on a black Italian leather quick release butterfly strap… They look amazing and I wish I could post a picture… I find myself choosing to wear the Cadisen Far more than the Seiko...I like the 40 mm size on my 7 1/2 inch wrist, And the sapphire crystal and low cost… Makes it the perfect dress beater watch!

    I really think the lume bonus makes the difference for the Seiko. Having lume makes it a more versatile everyday watch, where as the Cadisen is more of a straight up dress piece.

    I'm watching this with my Cadisen. I have both black and silver dial versions. The case size is actually rather 39mm than 40mm and it wears smaller than the Guanqin GJ16034 also featured here. I didn't care for the shiny bracelet so I changed it instantly to a leather strap which looks much better. Now I'm wearing them on Eulit perlons for the summer. I had the hour and minute hands changed for the silver dial version to a pilot style hands to enhance the legibility and to get some lume as the dauphine hands tend to "disappear" in some lighting conditions. Overall I really like the Cadisens (and the Guanqin too) although I would consider the Seiko 5 too if they would at least upgrade the movement.

    • @sasropakis
      @sasropakis 5 років тому

      @@rofieqnurrozaqrobarwarto4609 I don't know for sure because a watchmaker changed the hands. But I've read some comments that the dial of the Cadisen is indeed fixed so you can't remove it with the movement. Therefore I assume that the watchmaker has changed the hand by removing the bezel and the crystal. I couldn't ask this because when I picked up the watch there was only a salesperson in the shop. I guess that you could try to use a snap-back watch case opener with a lever to remove the bezel. But I wasn't that expensive to have a watchmaker to do it for me so I thought that it was worth it as I didn't have proper tools.

    came back to this classic video, as currently I'm thinking about getting my handy on another Seiko 5 (silver this time) - reason I'm commenting: I owen now a total of six Seikos (SNKL23, New Turtle, Quarz and some of the 'recrafts'), some about 5 years. Not a single one of them got a scratch on the hardlex and I'm clumsy.
    Though I'm still tempted to replace the SNKL-Crystals with Sapphire, as I love the look of domed-crystal on that one...

  • @Azeertyc
    @Azeertyc 5 років тому +24

    I own a SNKL23, it's actually one of my favorite in my collection... So I admit I am not completely impartial here, but I found the Seiko way more interesting and beautiful comparing to the Cadisen. When you put them side by side, you realize that the c1032's dial is quite flat, almost... boring so to speak.
    And that's completely personal but that roman "XII" is a big no-go for me...
    Anyway thanks for your videos, best regards from France

    The thing with the SNKL23 is; for the money it's an indecently pretty little watch and it does look far more expensive than it actually costs - which does have a value to it. It's annoying that it doesn't hand-wind (hacking doesn't bother me either way) but I'll put up with that for the price.
    The specs of the Cadisen are better but it looks like a $100 watch. When I look at my SNKL23, see the detail in the dial, the hands and the finishing... I don't care about the specs.
    I also don't mind the bracelet at all.

    The seiko wins because of its classical size, plus the design is much better. The cadisen would be better for me if it was 36/18. I've always been a fan of the classically sized watches. 40mm is a bir big for a dress like watch.

    I've never been able to tell the difference between hardlex and mineral. I've had maybe a dozen seikos with hardlex over the years and they've all gotten scratched fairly quickly. Sapphire, on the other hand, is in a different league. It's not impervious to scratches but it's a million times better than hardlex.

      Mineral and hardlex are less likely than sapphire to shatter, however, which may be a benefit considering that most people are going to treat a Seiko 5 a bit less gingerly than a $370,000 Grand Seiko Tourbillon watch.

    I purchased the Cadison, and have been wearing it for the last 3 weeks to work. It does wear ok, but I must say, I am not much of a fan of the clasp. It seems to self-open every now and then if I am articulating my wrist, and I have noticed it is sometimes hard to locate the ends to fasten each side. But a truly gorgeous watch. I would have to say though, as an every day wearer, my 20 year old quartz Lorus sports watch is by far better. I wouldn't bother with the Seiko 5 automatic, but might be willing to spend a couple hundred on a very good Seiko Quartz.

    I finally bought a silver dial Cadisen after watching your videos and wore it for the longest time. Then I finally went for the Ruimas you reviewed. That one replaced the Cadisen on my wrist. One note, not too long after the Ruimas purchase I received a call from my CC company to ask if I had purchased groceries at Walmart at 6 in the morning in Arkansas. Since I was asleep at that time in South Carolina I told them no. It was my first experience buying from the company you recommended and I fear the coincidence so quickly after leads me to decide never to make another buy from that particular site. It was the first time I've ever had a cc problem. Of course the company cancelled that card and issued another. I do like both watches and thank you for your reviews.

    I have a two year old Seiko snk809 on leather NATO strap, I also have a few months old Parnis "sumbariner" with miyota movement. The thing is the Seiko certainly has better quality control and manufacturing tolerances where it matters I would say. Parnis has far worse crown, stem feel to it. Not as crisp as Seiko. And Parnis stopped few times during wearing, two or three times. Also my Parnis dial has tiny spec of dust under the black paint near 12 o´clock position. But it is very accurate +- 2 sec. a day, Seiko runs about -6 sec. a day. Nowadays I wear a Parnis, because of the steel bracelet which is better in the summer (sweat is leather strap killer). But for the money you get more in Parnis - saphire crystal, very nice steel bracelet, submariner style, accurate japan movement for 75 USD. I bought Seiko for 74 USD two years ago, now they have become quite expensive around 100 USD. But in the end, both watches are great in their own way.

    Tough comparison in this one, but very informative. I own 5 different Seiko watches, only one of which is a 5. However it is my go to watch in my whole collection of 20 watches. Very nice holographic face with a jubilee bracelet that I have worn for over 20 years without any hair pulling. I’ve never had it fall off, and it looks great on my wrist, but it is very small on my 8 1/2” wrists. I’m a big guy and I wear a smaller watch, but as my eyes have started to fail and suffer from cataracts, I’ve been on the lookout for larger watches. I find them bulky and I continually crash into objects with them. I don’t know what to do.

    I agree completely with this video, but can say with confidence that after the honeymoon phase with the Cadisen is over, I'll definitely be reaching for the Seiko more often than the Cadisen. After all, I do have the Seiko wave tattooed on my arm. ;)

    You should really add a category for quality. I've drunk bought a couple of these cheap Chinese automatics and they all break within a couple of months of using them. God knows if they're even using real 316L steel.
    The Seiko will most likely still be ticking in 10, 15 years barring it being smashed on the ground and broken. Can't make any guarantees with the Cadisen...

      The cadisen uses seiko movement so probably will still working after years the biggest difference would be quality control, with this Chinese watches you can get the best watch for his price or you can get a shit that comes with poor construction quality

    The lack of hacking and hand winding in a watch drives me nuts and is a deal breaker for me. So I got a Seiko 5 JDM Model SARZ005 which uses the 4R36 movement for a few dollars more (about $150 USD at the time), and it has served me quite well for two years now. I really do like it for daily wear. The bracelet isn't great but it looks very nice on a leather strap.
    Until recently I didn't realize that there were different levels of watch within the group of Seiko 5 watches but apparently there are.

    You're generous awarding quite so many points to the Seiko for brand reputation. I'm a bit of a Seiko fanboi, but I can't deny this Cadisen outshines the SNK in almost every other regard. If your title and opening premise are any guide, it's really no contest at all; the Cadisen is just such a great budget everyday watch. I will defend the Seiko in terms of overall aesthetics however, as I agree with your assessment of the Seiko's superior case finishing and especially its far more visually interesting dial/handset. It's also worth mentioning that the SNK not only gets a bonus for having any lume at all, but it's the well-regarded Lumibrite, which acquits Seiko well in any budget watch comparo.

    In my humble opinion "Day-Date" is a must have complication in any watch, which has a calendar function. We usually know which month and year it is, but we usually forget about dates and weekdays - is it wednesday today?? This is a frequently asked question to me by others, and I quite often do not know either if it is not very beginning or end of the working week, not even speaking about long holidays.

    I have the Seiko SNKL19 (essentially the SNKL23 except with a gray dial and gold tone hands and markers), and I agree that the bracelet is terrible. I swapped it out immediately for a leather strap. I also have the SNKK86, however, and find the bracelet on that one to be much more bearable. I think it is because each link is the full width of the bracelet, as opposed to the three-part or five-part links on most Seiko 5 models. The one-piece links have a much more solid feel to them (even though they are still folded links), and the bracelet doesn't pinch nearly as much. So far I have left it on the bracelet and have worn it without any real discomfort. The SNKK86 is gold colored, but it also comes in SS with a black, white, or brown dial (SNKK81, SNKK77, and SNKK79) or in two-tone (SNKK83).

    Great comparison vid. At this point Seiko really should be using the NH36 throughout the 5 series. I have an older 5 series (10+ years now), and I will say that the major advantage Seiko has over its competitors is the detail of the dials. I get so many compliments on my Seiko 5. The bracelets are typically garbage, but it’s common to see them with aftermarket straps. I put a really nice black strap on my SNXS73, and it looks much better.

  • @markplows2198
    @markplows2198 5 років тому

    I have to disagree with you on a lot of the knocks against the Seiko. I use the same SNKL23 for a daily wear in the office and a machine shop and have not had a problem with the Hardlex. The bracelet, while cheaply made is fine. I don't know what you are doing to lose all your arm hair to it but I wear the watch snugly and have not had a problem with that at all. It is also very easy to adjust the number of links which I do twice a year spring and fall due to temp changes here in Canada. One thing that seems to get overlooked a lot is the recessed crown on the SNKL23, it makes the Seiko wear very comfortably as you don't have the crown digging in to the back of your hand all the time. I would like a hacking and hand winding movement but since it is a daily wear it almost never runs down on me so hand wind is not really an issue. As for the Cadisen, I have only heard a few things about them and almost all have been about poor quality and poor customer service, so I won't waste my time, money or energy on the brand.

    Wow you you really punished the Cadisen for being polished as if no person in there right mind would want polished over brushed. Many people prefer polished. After a sapphire upgrade, polishing the case is the most popular Seiko mod! That category really skewed the results. The only reason I haven’t bought the Cadisen is because of the brand (which I think will change soon). If was branded Seiko, I would have it in my wrist now! It’s one sharp looking watch. The only categories I think it loses in is brand and lume. Keep up the great videos! My favorite watch channel!
