OEX Phoxx IIv2 2021 Review and Setup • Best Beginner Wild Camping tent!? PHOXX 2 - Stealth camping
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лип 2024
- In this video I review my OEX Phoxx IIv2 (Phoxx 2) wild camping tent. I also go through how to set this tent up. I've used this tent in all conditions so feel its time to give my opinion on it. For the money, is it the best beginner backpacking tent? I'm not sponsored by OEX. You can buy these from Go outdoors, Blacks Camping and Millets online. Around £60-100 depending if you use a discount card/code.

I've been nosying about for a new tent and this vid has sold this to me. An informative and interesting clip. Thanks.
Just ordered one too 😅 doing an annual Brecon trip with my brother's, and still I won't shere.
Great video mate. Really helpful. Thanks
Cracking video Matt tent looks awesome fairplay loving the drone footage . Hope all is good my friend 👍
Cheers Ian, always fun wizzing the drone through the woods... I look forward to you doing the same, you've got the drone cinematic thing nailed.
For the money I think it's a smashing tent, plenty of room and well made, good zips etc. I'm just over 6'8" and just about fit inside (Yes I do touch the inner walls slightly). I've used it on a few wild camps and find it handles the wind quite well too with the angle of the sides.
6’’8” fair play, for the money I don’t think anything is going to knock spots off it
Hey how did you find the tent then I’m 6ft6 and just bought it
Just bought a phox11 and your explanations are by far the best of all reviews 25/06/23
Thanks mate, great review.
Nice one, I bought a phoxx 2 just before lockdown and haven't been able to use it yet, great to see one up, I love the colours and the style, can't wait to get out in it. All the best Paul
Yes Paul, roll on the end of lockdown so you can get out with it! It’s an awesome bit of kit
An excellent, honest appraisal of the tent.
ATB, Dave 👍
Thanks Dave
I own one of these , and i can say for the money is very good, been in some shocking weather and performed excellent.
I used mine last night on a beach camp, pitched with only stones as the beach was rocky! Held up well
Great video mate & definitely a great tent for the moeny! Hope your well
Cheers buddy! Be great to see your Lanshan in action too 🙌
Looks Really Nice. Great video and Beautiful nature. Enjoyed this video very Much. Cool Channel!!!
Thanks buddy 🙌
I’ve got this tent ; it’s a beaut . Not hilleberg but ticks all
Boxes regarding the important stuff. Waterproof . Comfortable and lightweight
Great review mate, mine has just arrived from Go outdoors. I didn't review it just bought it blind to replace my small wild country zephos 1 man. I feel relieved of this new tents pros and cons now I've watched you vid. Cheers ATB Mark
Cheers Mark, a truly great tent. My last wildcamp I used it on the coast kayak camping
I’ve been hoping for a pop up tent that rolls up, but the only one I found was not discrete at all for UK, and also 4.7kg 😬
Thanks to you showcasing the ease of putting it up - to someone who has never put a tent up yet! I’ve just ordered this one, got it for £80 from Tiso.
Thanks dude, nice energy, remind me of someone I know, all the best :)
I’ve used the Phoxx 2 version 1 in all seasons and all weathers on Dartmoor and absolutely love it. Agree that the supplied lines are a bit light so I changed mine for some more substantial ones which have helped in bad weather. Great video.
Thanks Rod! Yes great tent! I’m using mine this week for a kayak wild camp hopefully!
How did it hold up against snow and heavy wind?
@@CRIM35- pretty good, I use a couple of extra guy ropes in really strong wind as well of course as pitching it in the Lee of a tor if possible. No real problem in the snow although I did have to brush off laying snow during the night but that’s pretty much standard for any tent. It is a bit noisy in a strong wind but if you have the outer as tight as you can it is much reduced. At the end of the day it is what it is, an extremely good budget tent and yes there are more durable ones out there (at considerably more cost) but I have used this on Dartmoor in some really bad conditions without any concerns. Also with the phoxx 2 there is plenty of room for me and my kit to shelter in the bad weather.
Nice one mate, I was considering getting one of these and after seeing this video and reading the comments I've decided to go ahead and get one 👍
They’re decent, I might use it again on my next camp
@@AirbornePirates cheers mate, I usually use a Snugpak bivvy (I always like to be stealthy) but wanted something with more room for the winter months, this looks ideal
Great review buddy 👍always have looked at them. My mate Neil has one and he loves it. I'm more of a naturehike guy right now ohh yeeaahh. And your location looked awesome.
Thanks mate, appreciate that, this location was where i did my first wild camp. loved it!!
Where is this beautiful spot man?
It looks spacious and private
Now that's what I call a review!
Standby, I’ll be making a similar one of my cloud up 2! Thank you 😂🤘
Use this a lot, if it's absolutely pisn it darn I'm putting a tarp up before I do anything else so inner pitch first is no big deal 👍😂
That’s the tent I use,love it
🙌🙌🙌
I’ve got this tent it’s as easy to carry as some 1 man tents I use this when hiking or transport. But on my bike I use my Snugpak Stratosphere
I bought one of these last year when on offer at Go Outdoors (£55), best money I have ever spent on an economy tent. Easy to pitch, stands up to the British weather no problem, good quality all round. How they sell it at this price beats me. I'm only 5' 6" so this offers me loads of room, for storage, safe cooking and real comfort. If you get a chance, get one.
Cheers Hobbit! I assume people pay more for less weight ?
Does it need a groundsheet underneath?
Thanks!
@@peppiwilsonofficial922 no, the tub is sewn into the tent so everything included.
Hi great video thanks. If you swap the pegs for lightweight ones how many do you actually need?
iv got the same tent for last year bike packing, perfect for my needs and worth getting 2 man instead of 1 as there isnt much size difference
Bike packing is great! Lots more people doing it now E bikes are so accessible
Nice drone footage, I’m looking for a new tent. I’m tempted by this
Thanks bud, always fun flying between the branches, it’s a great tent. If they ever make a version 3, I’d hope for outer pitch first, for bad weather 🌧
@@AirbornePirates if you search on UA-cam, there is a short video showing a non destructive mod/hack paracord that enables you to keep the inner and outer together and pitch them at the same time...
@@peterevans8194 I’ve seen this video! It’s a great mod agreed
@@AirbornePirates Just been out and bought a Phoxx 2 V2...Wanted a quick to pitch, hassle free tent for the odd overnighter while away metal detecting. Already have a larger 3 person tent, but it's too much hassle to pitch and take down for a single night when I am by myself...
Like to just point out, I have the phoxx1 and it has similar storage space either side. And I manage to fit my 85lr down the side, I do however use the rain sheet on the bag just Incase and I lay the bag on the side and clip the chest strap to the bigger pole to keep it up. Of course I would only do this if the bag is fairly light when packing it to the side. Majority of my stuff is in the tent with me at night so the bag is lightweight and has no effect to the tent. Other than that little bit of input I really enjoyed the review and it’s helped me make my mind up buying one. As I’m looking for a tent big enough for me and 2 dogs so this is perfect. Cheers mate.
I’ve got both, side by side they’re considerably smaller I thought. Do the job though Josh no problem
Hoofin review mate just ordered it 👌🏼
Cheers Royal! 🤘
@@AirbornePirates no problem brother 👍🏼👍🏼
@@AirbornePirates no problem brother 👍🏼👍🏼
Hack - Put string or thin rope through inner and secure to outer. Then you put both skins up at same time.
Here’s a video of me camping in the phoxx IIv2
ua-cam.com/video/9hnDDCuUbAg/v-deo.html
After watching this I went out and bought one. Tried putting it up today to test for a weekend walking/camping and the eyelits that the short pole goes through seem helluva tight.
I had to put more effort to get the pole in place than I feel comfortable with and the little adjustable strap is on full extension. Don't see this thing lasting very long before the tension starts to rip the straps from the groundsheet.
Defo buying 1 after this review! Thanks.
I always take a tarp camping with me, so if it is raining, I'll put my tarp up 1st so the inner tent doesn't get wet!
Once again, thanks
For the money I highly rate this tent,
I am sure I saw a YT review on this tent suggesting a mod to allow a flysheet and inner together set up . Simply put a piece of cord through the sleeves where the poles go through and connect the flysheet ties to the new pieces of cord . I presume a little experimentation would be required to get lengths of the cords and possibly a better actual connection method introduced ( clips or velcro tape maybe ) rather than using the supplied cloth ties , but I think the mod is easy and worthwhile .
Very decent for the price great spot to set it up too
Thanks mate, I do love the woodland! 🌲🌲🌲
The phoxx2v2 can be pitched inner and outer together. As long as its laid out carefully It'll stay pretty dry
After watching this vid I’ve just put a order with go outdoors for this tent to take to Scotland
Great tent I still use mine now and then
Just gone one from go outdoors 😊
It's great tent for one person just spent a wet weekend in Galloway forest in the foxx two can't fault it , bone dry ,warm , no condensation real easy to pitch , get one it's a bargain you'll pay much more for a bigger brand that's no better .
Brilliant little tent. Tons of room for a six foot old guy and gear. Just remember you've got two vestibules. I can sit .up in it no probs
No complaints from me Barry! Great tent
I didn't realise GO do a foot print for this. Do you have the link? X
Where did you get your trousers? They look ideal for hiking. Great vid, subscribed!
Revolution Race the brand is, from Sweden! You can’t go wrong
Hi.
Nice set up review.
Can you connect the fly to the inner via para cord through the pole tubes,so that the inner is connect and protected from the rain, when set up in bad weather?
Regards
I’ve seen it done here on UA-cam, there’s defo a fix for it
Just got a Phoxx 2. I can not wait to get out and use it.
You won’t be disappointed BF. Lots of positive reviews from a wide varies amount of campers
@@AirbornePirates It is great that there is room for me and a hobbit.
Awesome my friend paid more for an umbrella
A lare thought . Iv been all over in all sorts if tents and the worst types of tents to be stuck in a fortnight long heavily drawn out storn are tunnel tents , the big porch with a tunnel front opening lets minimal light in to enjoy that you have to be in an awkward position ,, the phoxx 11 v2 allows for tons of light and you can lie down in a natural position to enjoy it , this style of tent will keep the cabin fever at bay during the longest of storms , it happens a lot
Thanks Joe! Couldn’t agree more
Mentioned in the video the footprint for the tent… can anyone recommend the correct size for the Phoxx 2…
Just got one of these off Millets for £48 with delivery. Looking forward to trying it out soon.
I’m mountain camping in mine next week. 👍
@@AirbornePirates Awesome. Have a good one. Plan using mine on Pendle within next few weeks.
Hey disco stu was that definitely the phoxx iiv2 and not the one man version? Iv2? I've been looking everywhere for one of these. Seems no where online stocks them
great video, what camera do you use to film? makes these great locations looks even better
Hi Colin, Sony ZV1 and IPhone 11 are my weapons of choice 🤘
@@AirbornePirates I guess it all comes down to how you use it, thanks for the reply!
Very tempted by the Phoxx 2. Only worry just have is that you've to set up the inner first. Not great in scottish weather.
Been looking at it or the Bobcat.
Yeh, I saw a video on UA-cam where somebody made a mode so it could pitch outer first
If you store the tent with the inner wrapped around the outer and the two clips clipped at the foot end, you can unroll it and leave the outer covering the inner while you insert the poles and erect the tent. Then just peg down the outer. There’s a guy who demonstrates this with the Phoxx 1 which is the same design. Watch what he does but I imagine you can keep the fly over and get the poles in place. ua-cam.com/video/ozBPBhmDKn8/v-deo.html
i used this tent on a 3 day camp in the peak district, i swapped the pegs out to
For the money, can’t go wrong 👌
Where'd you find this for 60 quid? It's 75% off now at go outdoors and it's... Well I can't tell you how much it was because its now out of stock on the website lol... But I was more like 90quid I think yesterday when I looked
Brilliant video and channel. WHAT TROUSERS 👖 HAVD YOU GOT ON ? LOOK BRILLLIANT 👍
Thanks dude! They are revolution race GPX olive pants, they’re actually mega!!
Do you reckon this is suitable for 1 (6ft), dog (lab) and kit? Casual/summer camping mainly. Great review.
I’m around same size and I’ve camped with my 42kg Weimaraner and kit no problem
Awesome, thanks
I use the Phoxx 2 currently - Love it, done well in the highlands, lakes, south coast - all good. The only issue is the lack of space when you're tent bound - I tried using a tarp to extend the porches but it feels clunky.
I'm considering getting a lanshan to solve its shortcomings.... i.e. weight and lack of porch space. What do you think?
A mountain tent might be better for you, cloud 2 perhaps? The lanshan looks pretty small inside too, but I haven’t got one I must say
@@AirbornePirates I'll check it out !
@@AirbornePirates I’ve got a lanshan 2 four seasons (1200grams) Room enough for 2 plus rucksacks in the vestibules. Solo, its a palace. I’m looking for a second tent to take the kids wild camping but I haven’t found anything as good in terms of weight, size and price. I haven’t tested it in a full-on mountain storm though. I’d like to try something different but I don’t want to go heavier or too expensive. Cheers
@@mistymountainrambler61 cloud up 2 is also pretty decent for the money
I just bought the coyote 111 and havent tried it yet , wondered if you have tried or heard of any one using it.
I’ve never used it but English woodsman has and loves it if I recall
What's the music tracks used in the video?
It’s from epidemic sound 👌
Good tent I picked up a banshee for 60 quid with an elusive foot print banshee beats these hands down...
I’ve heard good things about the Banshee, never tried one myself but for same money can’t go wrong
Hey man should i buy one?
Is there a mesh to keep flys out if you slept with the door open?
Yep keeps flies out mate
@Islander Outdoors probably didn’t explain myself properly I meant a mesh on the inner so you can see out. Sorry
Nothing wrong with a cheap tent for most of us, its not like we need a 1000 pound expeditionary tent for a quick woodland overnighter. Sold my Robens starlight as I have given up on tents for my solo camps, but it was a great inexpensive tent.
I’ve heard excellent things about those robens tents. My favourite thing to do is camp in the British army basha, and they cost next to nothing
@@AirbornePirates It was top notch quality and weight for the money, super easy to set up and just the right size. Finding a flat spot in the woodland for a tent around here is too much work :p
Do you know any websites that I can purchase his tent I live in the United States I really want this team I've been planning on it for a year and now I'm only finding it on United Kingdom websites?
It’s a British company so I’m not sure you’d find it in USA. Go outdoors are the prime one here in UK
Does this tent have mesh on the doors, flyscreens?
The inner does 👍
Been looking at all sorts of 2 man tents, liked the look if the MSR's but i see this one for 70 quid, such a bargain had to get one.
Would be real nice, if you could tell where you bought it, it seems to be sold out everywhere?
@@hyperhummel9135 Millets
@@voodoosurgeon9337 Thank you for the quick reply!
That’s definitely not a 2 person tent 😂 I don’t know why they claim it as 2 person. It’s a 1 man tent.
Great Video, but does anyone know where to get one, they've seem to be sold out evrywhere?
Millets I think, I’m giving one away. See the comp video
@@AirbornePirates Thank you very much!
I just ordered one from go outdoors
@@SamBat97 thank you for the tip, wanted to do the same and now i understand that probably Brexit is the reason i cant get it anywhere in Germany
If it was aimed at wild campers they made a blunder designing it as inner first. I know there's an easy mod.
Anyone know where I can get the iiv2 from? Seems no where online has it available.
They seem to go up in bursts, gooutdoors/ blacks are the ones to keep an eye on
@@AirbornePirates that's awesome thanks for the quick reply!
doesn't look like very breathable, how's the moisture inside?
Never had any issues to be honest
@@AirbornePirates Damn, I almost wish you said it was just I had a reason not to want one lol! Still confused why they didn't add a bit of mesh on the inner doors, but if it's breathable still then that's great. Love the design itself, but unfortunately none of the retailers ship to Canada or I'd give one a go.
I grabbed mine on the way to Scotland having remembered leaving my msr at home , i got the two man job as two man means one man and his gear ( nobody realises we take more gear these days) then moan two men dont fit ? Always buy two man tents even soloing
100% or one man and his dog and gear
Where about a is this? Looks absolutely gorgeous.
Thanks JR, it’s a forest on my island. We have loads of them.
'My island'...? Wow. Weird flex but okay
Anybody had problems with the pole length on these ?, I’d heard of problems before and having just bought one I can confirm this is a real issue.
I haven’t personally Chris
@@AirbornePirates no worries, I got it through a friend who works at go outdoors on a massive discount. She's gonna exchange it as faulty, they said it's not as common recently but in the past oex had a fair bit of quality control issues. However at the price point it does seem like a pretty good tent.
Having just returned from Dartmoor for the first try of this tent, there is no way this is a 2 man tent. It should be called the 1+ as in 1 man plus extra space for backpack etc as the vestibules aren’t big enough for that!
Pretty much all 2 man tents are realistically one man in my opinion 👌
What trousers are those? @islanderoutdoors
Revolution Race bud
@@AirbornePirates Thank you, sir! They look excellent! Love the channel!
⛺🌲🌲🌲🌲
Hydrostatic head is more a marketing tool than a realistic measure of how waterproof your tent is. It measures static pressure, not a collection of individual raindrops. Anything over 1000 will keep you dry, anything over 2000 is just hype.
This would have been perfect for me and my dog if it wasn't pitched inner first. Two doors and loads of space, great price. But a soaking wet inner in a downpour makes a mockery of 4000 hydrostatic head. Why do tent manufacturers do that, it makes no sense.
