Shame was pretty much 100% Cliff Roberston's invention. When they invited him to be a villain on the show they didn't have a particular character in mind so they asked him what he'd like to do. He replied that "it might be fun to play a cowboy who was really dumb and took himself really, really seriously."
I am aware, that these are different times we live in. Television and morality, was much better back then...(In case no one else noticed,😉) but I really like how West played on Batman's Intellect and overall education; not like modern versions, where it's all about assaulting people with "violence and barbarity..." I know to a lot of people, this version of Batman, may seem weak, but Batman is a Master of deception and guile when need be... Above all he has immense self control...AKA self discipline. (This series, had a great balance of teaching people to stand up for what is right, as well as teaching them new vocabulary and other important skills, to help them become better people!
This version of Batman was fun but far away from the character that Bob Kane and Bill Finger created. The modern Batman is more like the original creation.
Kevin Conroy modeled his version of Batman after Adam West's. His version was a mixture of Adam West's and Tim Burton's version of Batman. Also, Adam West voiced The Gray Ghost on Batman: The Animated Series.
I loved this show growing up as a child in the late 1960s and 1970s. When the whole “Dark Knight Returns” Batman came along this show was maligned but now it again seems to be coming into favor. Many elements were great - good vs evil, Batman pitting his skills against the villain’s plot for a FULL 30 min, the tilted camera work for the villains lairs, and the cliffhanger death traps. The early episodes WERE based on comics stories of the time, but I wish it were not interpreted with so much camp. In the early episodes there are throwaway camp lines that can be ignored, but as the show went on the writing deteriorated and it just became silly nonsense. I would love to see this show resurrected in the same format but without the camp elements.
Without any doubt, one the best fights of the series! The reason it’s only between Batman & Shame was because of the constantly shrinking budget, but this turned out to be a good thing in the end! There really should have been a few more fights where it was just Batman and the main villain.
@milosbatmanvideos The actor who played Shame here is Cliff Robertson, who's probably more better known for playing Uncle Ben in the Raimi Spider-Man trilogy.
It was probably used dozens of times. Hollywood likes to use the same sets over and over with cosmetic changes, the Universal Studios tour there shows some examples.
Eight when I first saw this, fifty years ago.Loved the movie ,Shane, love his knock off and this scene.Always impressed by how Hollywood actors joined in the fun,and batman's totally meaningless comments after a fistfight.
Too bad Shame wasn't brought to JLU or Batman: the Brave and the Bold. He could've fought Vigilante. Heck, Vigilante gueststarring might've been fun even here (his costume is probably pretty easy to create in live action compared to Batman's)
@@JTDK1981 Oooo.. yeah, Brave and the Bold would've been a good one. And besides Vigilante, there's always Jonah Hex, somehow. I mean, come on, it's DC, they could have found a way.
It's sad that the 3rd Season turned villains like Egghead and Shame into bumbling cowards. The 1st Season of Batman is the best with a prefect blend of action and camp.
This is the Batman of my childhood. He was clean cut, and honest. He always obeyed the laws and taught Robin right from wrong. RIP Adam West, 1928- 2017.
Omg 'Batman don't you cry at my tights'...... Oh wow I would cry if his pretty opaque tights were ruined... Want his legs free of being hurt.... My pretty lil girl so cute mwah xx
You are completely wrong. Shane was Alan Ladd’s character in the movie with the same name. The Batman villain was named Shame, as a parody of that character.

The shame of it 😉

They had an all-out brawl earlier in the episode.
This is one of the few times where Batman seemed pissed at a villain.
I loved it when Shame said “don’t you ever smile, you look grimmer than a losing Football Coach 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I’m suprised that the Joker didn’t kill him right then and there
Enjoyed when Shame asked how far apart they were so his gang could start shooting. But Robin and Batgirl kept the fight fair.
Uncle Ben never told Peter the time he fought Batman in the 60s.
i don't get the reference

My all time favorite Batman fight!
Absolutely!
Pretty sure that street was used twice in the original run of Star Trek.

100% correct
This actually was a really good fight for this show at this time, when the series was falling apart.
3rd season was poor, but the fight scenes were still good.
"You're a sham, Shame"
3:02 Shame lands a kick and it sounds like a punch. 🤨
Shame should've told Batman he's Spiderman's Uncle Ben Lol 😂
He's also a good ventriloquist. 😉
Pretty solid fight for this series. With a little imagination, Conroy's Batman TAS fits here pretty well.

Great episode, great fight scene and great music
A good fight scene. I enjoyed the verbal altercation more than the physical fight.
Absolutely a classic clip !! 😂lol cliff was an outstanding actor ! He was brilliant!!!
"Your mother wore Army shoes" - Shame
"Jokes on you. My mother is dead." - Batman
(reality sets in)
"*MOMMY!!!!!*"
I used to think that was Shane from the movie Shane !! Then I realized his name was Shame !!!🤠
@UncleMikeNJ London was called Londinnium. And Scotland Yard was called Ireland Yard.
And that starred Jack Palance who later played Grissom in the Tim Burton film and was one of the visual inspirations for Darkseid.
Rip Adam West
It was a good thing that Robin and Batgirl arrived at the condemned street so Batman wouldn't get killed and the fight would be fair.
get his tiny gun whipped out of his hand immediately submits to defeat
Batgirl 2023 "I'll take the women, you take the men."
Robin 2023 "You'll have to be a bit more specific"
tolerance not bigotry please.
sad, but true
Shame was my favorite character from the series, just hysterical.
In addition to that ass-whipping he took, Shame then had to endure that sanctimonious speech by Batman
You must admit Batman is tough. Not many people can take being hit with that much polystyrene foam.
He got Batman pretty good!
Was that Cliff Robertson's real life wife, Dina Merrill?
Yes it was! She has the Extra Special Guest Villainess billing as, ahem, Calamity Jan.
Yes.
