- What is a rectilinear lens? The Canon RF10-20mm f/4 L IS STM is! This ultra-wide zoom delivers incredibly wide images with zero barrel and pin cushion distortion. We got our hands on the new RF version of Canon's popular EF 12-24mm f/4 before launch to see if the new kid on the block would live up to its predecessor's stature.

man, this is the first lens that really has me tempted to move totally over to RF
You won't regret making the switch. The quality of all the RF glass is amazing.
great video! Nice. THX, Greetings from Vienna/Austria
Thank you!
I would also be excited for a ultra wide fast prime lens..
You and a lot of astro photographers I'm sure! We're looking forward to seeing what Canon has in store.
This is great, Canon is killing it with cool lenses! I wonder if this means that for video, a human subject would also look less distorted? I am planning to pair it with my C70!
It's a great video option! If you're mindful with your compositions it'll be great for humans. If you put them in the center edges of the frame they will get a bit stretched and squished.
@@OrmsTV Awesome, thanks for the tip!
What about distortion ? Recently Canon has stopped worrying about this parameter. 14-35 has around 7%, 24 1.8 around 9% and 16 2.8 - i would say it is a half-fish-eye lens - 11-12%, something like that. Is it same story here ?
We didn't see any barrel or pin cushion distortion. The only distortion we noticed is the stretching and squeezing in the middle edges of the imaged. Have a look at the samples in the video, the lines on the edge of the frames are dead straight.
@@OrmsTV On digital-picture it looks like a 8-9% at 10mm. If you didn't notice the distortion, then you were looking at a file to which a correction profile was applied
Dont need any more f4s. F1.2 or 1.4 please, Canon
Can you imagine the size of this lens if it was an f/1.4 or 1.2!
@@OrmsTVi dont think He means this lens in particular. He speaks about a 35mm or any other lens...
@@momenteimlicht3375my Canon RF 85 F1.2 is superb. Best in the biz. Stopping down to f1.4 is not the same as f1.2, and @ f1.2 is sharp as a tack. I use it for closer sports.
Would it work for astrophotography?
It would work for astro, just keep in mind that it is f/4 so it wouldn't be letting in as much light as you'd ideally want.
Excellent side-by side comparisons. I'm tempted to get this lens, but never really shoot this wide.
Thank you! It's an interesting focal length to shoot at, ending up with an image quite different to what the eye sees! But, it can be very rewarding when you get it right.
RF lenses are so overpriced, it difficult to get excited about a new lens when it is out of most peoples reach.
Rip sony nikon 😂
Haha, great lens for sure
It'll be interesting to see what they reply with!
@@OrmsTV yea I think Sony will respond. I will say the 12-24 2.8 they have is really impressive as well but not rectilinear and no IS. Still an amazing piece of glass.
@@robertadams3666Sonys small 46m mount is the limiting factor. Sony could not replease a 10 or 11mm rectiinear due to vignetting on that smaller mount. Note Canon and Nikon both use 52mm mounts.
