  • This is a general video at 7 weeks on Cornish cross meat bird chickens.
We weighed some out and the roosters are over 8# and the hens are over 6#
We buy 1 skid of feed every n the spring. 40 bags at 50# is 2000# of feed. We get our best buying deal at this price.
We place the feed in blue plastic bins that were used for transportation of various peppers into the USA.
They are air tight and keep the feed usable, longer, rather than just in the bags.
This also eliminates the invitation to rodents and bags of feed sitting around.
Back to why a 2000# of chicken feed is important.
That split works very well to feed 75 in the spring and 75 late summer. We use a starter chick feed also. Some of this feed also goes to our egg layers.
Over 25 dies before butchering in the spring batch.
Was it the cheap 20% feed that I made a deal on?
Was it genetics? We don’t know.
So this summer/fall batch of 75 Cornish cross chickens we mixed 6 bags of 28% turkey/game bird high protein feed into our blue barrels.
They filled out and increase weight much better.
The last two weeks we are using a Non-GMO 20% protein feed that is coming out of a mill in Ohio.
We are hopeful that the majority will make it to butchering time next week so the freezer will be stocked.
Growing these chickens is NOT cheaper than what we can buy from a local chicken wholesaler that sells to all grocery stores and restaurants within a few hours of our area.
We do this for better cleaner food for us.
If you are ever interested in a chicken from us let us know. Our price is $25 a whole chicken. If you help learning how to cut one up we can help you when you buy.
As always we are not responsible for anything you may or may not do. This is just what we do on our farm. Farming can be dangerous and deadly. Working with livestock, heavy stuff, manure, and anything else you may see or hear about in our videos can be dangerous. You are warned.
A lot of this knowledge was in my hands as a child when I helped my great grandparents and grandparents. It has been a journey relearning a lot of what I almost forgot and teaching our children.
I am thankful for my father and grandfather always joking they were going to get us chickens as gifts. As I child I wanted to raise chickens so bad after my great grandfather died and my grandfather also stopped raising them. They both had backyard coups. One was built into the garage/barn/storage. The other, was a coup on skids that lays in ruin at the back of my property.
Anyways. Enjoy the video. It’s about entertainment and maybe some education for you.
