  • Bought this motor at Tomahawk 2024 from Phil Gatzow. It had spark when purchased but was in non-running condition. Fuel system needed a lot of attention, but otherwise it was in great mechanical condition.

    Any time I seen an old air cooled Elgin it reminds me of my first motor. It was an early 50's (I think) 2 hp Elgin. My dad gave it to me when I was about 5 and told me if I could start it, I could use it. Times were different then. Anyways, I could start it, and it pushed my old waterlogged plywood boat through the water at a kid-safe speed.
    One day I was playing around in the bay at camp with it and ran out of gas. My older brother helped me fill it up and away I went.... For a few seconds My brother was twice my age, but still didn't know anything about mixed fuel. Pure gas killed that little motor and my chance to use a motor by myself for a couple more years. Even the 5 hp Eska we had was too hard for my skinny little arms to start. Thanks again for the video

      @@waynerowlinson6177 That's a great story even if it meant the unfortunate end to a nice little outboard. I have one of the 2hp air cooled Elgins also. I really l8ke that little motor. It's too bad yours got straight gassed and met its end. The 5hp Tecumseh powerhead on the Eska is definitely harder to start than the 2hp Elgin. Great memories. Thanks for the story and thanks for watching!

    My father had one like this when I was a kid. His had a button on top that had to be depressed when you pulled the starter rope which would recoil into the top. It was a great motor that never gave him any trouble. You did a great job on this one. It brought me back to fishing with my father long ago. Thank you.

    What a sweet 1946! For that rich of a mixture I sure didn’t see any smoke at all! I’m impressed! Thanks Ben! Have a great weekend! Mark in Iowa.

      @@marksmith4582 Thanks Mark! There is some smoke, but once it is warm and dialed in, it isn't bad. That and the fact that it is so small it isn't burning much fuel. It turned out a decent little runner. Have a great weekend and thanks for watching!

    A great canoe motor. Had a 2hp air cooled Elgin when i lived in Saskatchewan and made a side mount for my 15 foot cedarstrip canoe. Worked well until my son and I were swamped by the wake from a passing boat in a no wake zone. Luckliy we were very close to shore so emptied the canoe of water and paddled back to the landing. Dried the motor out at home and got it working again but sold it later for parts. Nice to see a little one running so well.

      It definitely seems like it would be a great canoe motor. I'll have to give it a try on my 17 foot Alumacraft flat back. Too bad yours ended up going for a swim and ultimately ended up as parts. At least you were OK and able to get it going again. Thanks for watching!

    • @marksmith9295

      In retrospect the side mount wasnt a good idea for that particular canoe. A 17 foot square stern will easily take a 4hp . I ran a 4hp Evinrude on a Grumman 17 flat back all summer in 1984 for mineral exploration work in northern Manitoba. The geologist i worked with sat up front in a folding aluminum deck chair for our multi hour daily trips to claims we worked.

    Very cool! A lot quieter than I though it would be, with the exhaust in the water. I got an old Johnson 20 going yesterday. There was so much junk in the tank, fuel lines, fuel pump, but the carb was pretty clean. Put it on the back of my little 14' lund, and took it for a rip. Super nice motor. I hope you put this one on the back of a boat, and show a video of it running. I was given a Tanaka 300, and have an old Eska 3 hp, and a couple other little air cooled 3 hp motors. Sometimes I throw one in the front of the boat for a backup motor. They are all a little on the noisey side, but all run great. Thanks for sharing.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  5 місяців тому

      Thank you. These are fairly quiet. Much quieter than the air cooled outboards built on the Eska platform for sure. The little air cooled motors do make a pretty good backup kicker.
      That Johnson 20 is a great motor. The 22c.i OMCs are my favorite motors. Nice job getting that one back on the water.
      I do plan to put this one on a boat. With any luck I will mange to do that still this season. Thanks for watching!

    They must have made a million of these and think back to being a kid at our lake house in the early 60's there wasn't a nerd for speed . Many small aluminum v hulls with little kicker to get out on the lake

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  5 місяців тому

      @@sailawaybob They sure did build a bunch of these little outboards. There is definitely a big difference in recreational boating from that time to now. Now there are lots of large boats that burn lots of fuel and make huge waves for the sake of making huge waves. It's kind of amazing to me the number of wake surfing boats that I see on all sorts of small inland lakes in my area. Everyone has a right to get out and have fun, and to each their own. Those wake boats sure make it difficult for those of us that like to get out and enjoy our small aluminum boats and smaller outboards though. They disrupt fishing on small lakes to a significant degree too. I enjoy putting around and I also enjoy going fast and I don't want to be a buzzkill for anyone, but I'm not sure those boats have much of a place on small lakes. That's just my humble opinion, though.

    A friend gave me one of these to see if I could get it to run, it doesn't have spark and the plug wire is bad but even with the puller the flywheel won't come and I'm afraid of breaking it, always been able to get them to pop on OMC motors, might wait to see if I can find a parts motor.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  5 місяців тому

      @@stever.3580 Cool that your friend gave you one of these. Don't try to use a jaw type puller on the flywheel. The 1.25hp does not habe any puller holes. You have to partially remove the flywheel nut, put a small prybar under the rim of.the flywheel and give the end of the flywheel nut a solid rap with a hammer (brass preferably) to pop the flywheel off the crank taper. Once that is off everything is accessible. These motors are quite simple in construction. Hopefully you can revive it. Neat little motors. Thanks for watching!
