My 2-Year Experience with Pond5: Why I Decided to Stop Using It

Hey everyone, in this video, I'm sharing my two-year experience with Pond5, a popular stock footage website that I began using in 2020 during the pandemic. Like many others, I was struggling to find work and decided to shoot some stock footage to pitch to news and media companies. However, I quickly found that selling stock footage on Pond5 was a time-consuming process that didn't provide a significant return on investment.
In this video, I'll explain the challenges I faced, including how the subject matter I hoped to sell wasn't in demand on Pond5. Instead, I discovered that the majority of my sales were for editorial footage related to the pandemic and other current events. I also realized that the commercial footage that did sell was typically hyperlapses or other well-produced shots that required significant investment in production value.
Despite these challenges, my experience with Pond5 helped me to develop smooth editing workflows that I now use in my media production business. And while I've moved away from selling stock footage on Pond5, I still earn a small amount of passive income each month from my previous sales on the platform.
In this video, I'll also discuss a new platform called Black Box that I plan to try out for selling my footage. Black Box allows users to upload their footage and have it curated by someone else, with the user collecting a percentage of the sales. I see this as a way to make passive income without having to spend significant time and effort on keywording and metadata.
Finally, I provide a tutorial on how to do bulk editing for keywords and metadata on Pond5, which can be a time-consuming process. However, I'll share some tips on how to streamline this process by focusing on the most relevant keywords and using a consistent format for titles and descriptions.
Overall, I emphasize the importance of focus and specialization in building a successful media production business. While selling stock footage on Pond5 may not be the best use of my time, I still value the skills and workflows I developed through the experience.
