At the shelter where you felt it was "a little spooky", I'm glad you camped elsewhere. It's always best to trust your intuition/instincts. May have been nothing, but at the least, if you stayed you probably would've been on edge all night.
I think the mountain your mom was asking about was Yonah Mountain. It lyes been Cleveland and Hellen. With no other mountains around it, it looks very prominent. Actually 3166’.
It was so good! And you should, it was amazing! We hiked after the hurricane. Not immediately after, but I was asking the shuttle driver we book with about the area and the hostel we stayed at and both said the area we wanted to do had not been affected and was fine to hike. Which really was the case, we didn’t see anything on trail that was fresh or not passable.

Exactly how I felt about it. I felt WAY more comfortable up the hill next to the trail.
