    I use to stay with a family of Indians near Albuquerque, N.M. They took me to a turquoise mine known only to them. I saw turquoise, some as soft as chuck,
    all the way up to some that look like glass. They showed me how they made turquoise jewelry., drilling holes in it, with broken tips of wood files. on a long shaft with a clay disc to make it spin fast to drill the turquoise. They would polish the cabochons and wrap them in thin gauge sterling silver to make jewelry. I was only twelve then. I am 80 now, and cry when I think of those memories.

      You were blessed to have such an experience. Turquoise is sacred and so are your memories, how lucky you are. I am 77 and my brother was Hoopa Indian from Northern California and I remember visiting the reservation and watching as huge salmon were netted from the river then cooked over an open fire for a big celebration dinner. No turquoise but wonderful memories and beautiful pine needle baskets. 💜

    If you go to flea markets in the southwest you can find turquoise also Native American jewelry shows but gotta ask and they do like trading if you have other rough rock or sheet silver. I shopped Durango Silver they got smacking good turquoise.

    I love when you talked about giving your wife a ring when she was 14!!! I've known my husband since I was 2 yrs old! Yesterday was our anniversary. You look like a happy person! How amazing to work with turquoise for your whole life! I'm so grateful to have randomly happened on this video! I just left a few messages on your eBay about a couple stones I want to get. So, what I never understand is, should I never buy stabilize? Or only a certain kind of stabilization?

    • @JohnHartmanDurango
      @JohnHartmanDurango 5 років тому +1

      There is nothing wrong with stabilized, It's just not generally worth as much, so???

    I noticed all the isolated pieces you showed were shiny. Is a natural turquoise that's been cut into a cabochon naturally shiny? Are there any that are kinda chalky dull but still a beautiful spiderweb blue? The reason I ask is because of this ring I bought that is suppose to be real turquoise. This thing almost reminds me of a real robins egg...kinda that eggshell ( not glossy) appearance. The color is robins egg blue and it has thin black spiderwebbing on one half more than the other half. Its suppose to be a somewhat old ring. Any info at all would be much appreciated.

    Funny. I knew this was going to be an advertisement for his company, but I also knew I would learn something. What I learned was this: REAL turquoise is rare and, sadly, there are tons of people buying fake "stablized" and synthetic turquoise, thinking it's the REAL THING.

I found a new deposit in Caribbean. sky blue, robins egg blue, deep blue, Caribbean blue. im gonna start a mine. some with matrix and some without. cut into jewelry and polished with no stabilization then cut stone was dropped on concrete flood and still no damage. it still is not the hardest turquoise but cuts and polishes with zero stabilization. better blue than iran mine and arizona sleeping beauty. id love a pro like u to cut mine sometime

      @@JohnHartmanDurango what is the best email to send to? Not sure how easy it will be to get the right to mine in another country. I should be able to cut what i have into jewelry and fly to the island and try to start a jewelery business and just take it as i need it.. I did the hardness tests and some of them have hardness of 7 or more... sharp quarts did not scratch it, and others were 6.5 or 6 steel and iron and glass did not scratch. some look amazing can take polish but glass scratches so those will be great for stabilized jewelry so people can buy something affordable. What ever comes of it I hope the island will benefit from it and i hope i get a good reward.. not trying to steal their resources but when you see it you will know what a waste it will be if no one does anything with it. with other mines closed that also have robins egg sky blue at those hardness levels this will be a new source and the matrix is tiny colored types of quarts crystals... clear, blue clear, white, tan, yellow, orange, red, light brown, chocolate brown, and black. The ones with matrix are like hard blue with round unmelted colored quarts embedded so when its cut it looks amazing, also has solid blues, and example of sky blue and light blue swirl. I was told the best stuff will be deeper down in ground

      @@JohnHartmanDurango nice, just got this message. I was looking up your videos on how to make turquoise jewelry and the equipment is too expensive. is there anyway you can turn some of it into jewelry for me and also go in on a possible mine on the island? I looked up laws and asl ong as there is no land owner or we get permission from land owner we can mine it and give the government their percentage. i tested hardness and some is 3 to 5 and others hardness is 6 and all the way to 7. sharpen quartz did not scratch it... iron file did not scratch, glass did not scratch and steel did not scratch...
