I was amazed at how much better my lawn looked when I kept the blade sharp. Doesn’t take very long even with a hand file and if you’re mulching, it’s far better to have a sharp blade over a dull one.
This is all good advice if you live in the US, but hear in Britain the average mowing hight is between 1 and 2 inchs, and my grass at an inch short is dark green like the grass mowed at 3 inches in the video, so really It all depends on where you live and what sort of grass you have. I use a rotory Honda mower with a rear roller, beautiful stripes with no wheel marks.
Awesome video. I cut my grass at 3.5 and it looks fantastic. In my younger days, I would try to cut it the shortest as possible thinking I wouldn't have to cut it as often. It takes you 3 1/2 hours to cut your grass!? You should seriously invest in a zero turn mower. I work for a landscaping company and mow on the weekends for extra cash. Even when doing everything myself (mow, string trim, and blow) it never takes more than an hour. Those much larger properties we use zero turns

This well done video is by a Colorado-based firm. Their 3" height minimum is true for most cool-season grasses, but not necessarily for warm-season grasses of the southern states. Here, height depends upon turfgrass variety. Cut St. Augustine tall, but Bermuda short. Zoysia can go both ways depending upon the water and labor you want to put into it. Essentially, shorter cut lawns must be cut more frequently so that you're never removing more than 1/3 of their height. Even with my crappy St. Augustine yard I have to cut more than once every 7 days during the peak of the summer growing season. If I don't, I end up with clobbs of grass leaves smothering the lawn beneath and I end up taking. And I do sharpen my blades several times per season, but probably not every 4 cuts. (I don't work in the industry but years ago I did earn a horticulture degree which included a semester-long turfgrass class.)
Can confirm after military in Polk, LA/Drum, NY/CO now. Scalped in one state, max deck height here, cut like my hometown up north because I was from there (aka the wrong way -_-...)
Every site I visit says Southern Common Bermuda should be 1.5-2" tall. The manufacturer seed says 2". Videos like this are confusing to me. Has anyone successfully kept their Bermuda grass taller?

Growing up here in Phoenix I was taught to water 2x a week deeply. The Bermuda grass will spread and fill in best. Also to cut it short until it has filled in. I was taught it would help it be tolerant of times with missed watering. After it is reestablished in spring then to cut it ~2". I dont know if it is correct or not. It is just how I was taught back in the late 60s & early 70s. And now, I am moving to Iowa so have to learn how to get rid of the sticker weeds there and what to over seed with and how to care for it. I am 64 and still trying to learn and get better. Thank you for your videos.
We are not sure about warm season grasses like the ones that grow in areas like Phoenix, but this is the correct technique for cool season grasses which you will most likely have in Iowa.
Yes that is correct. Move both the front and the back. They might adjust in the opposite directions so make sure you don't accidentally move one up and the other down.
You're right on all points! Also, the more expensive mowers have the ability to set the deck higher than cheaper ones. Very good information, but IMHO it's NOT that most homeowners who cut their own grass too low inadvertently set the lawnmower too low, it's that they cut shorter because they don't want to mow as OFTEN.
We service about 5000 customers and when we inform them that they are cutting their lawn too short they always say, "I am cutting it on the highest setting." Then we go look at their lawn mower and it is on the middle setting. Then they say, "my son cut the lawn last, he must have lowered it because I had it on the highest setting."

There was a severe drought last year where i did not mow the lawn during early spring. I would say it was about 3-4" and it was much greener than the neighbors who had cut theirs multiple times before the water shortage.
To short for a radial mower: anything below 3” To short for a reel mower: anything below 1/2” or 1” I use a zero turn radial mower at my farm since I live on a rather large piece of property but I want to use a reel mower for around the house while still using the zero turn radial mower for everything else.
There wasn’t any mention of different types of grass being cut at different heights. I was told that fescue is cut high and zoysia is cut low. Most of the lawns my young son cuts in my neighborhood has zoysia. What are your thoughts on this? Thx! Great video!
If you want to cut lower than 3 inches in the summer, you must cut it every 3 to 4 days. That will give you the same green as a higher grass and root strength.
Agreed, I have not seen many Golf Courses at 3" (not the greens but the fairways...) - but they mow more often, When you let the grass grow high, the grass stem elongates and when you do mow you are cutting off all blades and leaving only stems, Comparing a 2" mow to a 3" mow should be done if in both cases you only cut off 1/3 the plant (Cutting the 2" lawn when it reaches 3" and cutting the 3" lawn when it is at 4.5") Only then are you comparing Apples to Apples.
Another question, how many times can a blade typically be sharpened before it should be replaced? The new blades at Lowe’s etc. come with a dull edge. Are they good enough? Or do folks sharpen a brand new blade as well??
My neighbors scalp their lawns every week which are a salad bar of weeds and weed grasses. I aerate and overseed my lawn every fall, I fertilize, spot spray weeds and mow at my mowers highest setting. If it hasnt rained and it's been hot for several days I don't mow until we get a good rain. My yard looks like a sea of green grass in the middle of a dessert.
Quick to the point video. Subscribed! A question please. Is a hover mower a bad idea? Is it better to use the type of mower with wheels you are using in this video always better? Thanks in advance.
Our recommendations are for cool season grasses. We do not know much about warm season grasses so it is best to consult a warm season grass expert about Bermuda grasses.
Tell this the my nabers. They literally mow it down to the roots, then during summer they are out there every day watering there lawn because it all dies. Then they say to me "your lawns are getting abit tall there do you want me to organise my guy to mow it for you" yet my lawn is the only one that stays green all year around...
I've been having issues with my lawn not growing fast, I cannot get it to grow 4 inches, I have not mowed my lawn in 2 weeks, I have fescue, and I use organic's and limestone, my grass is nice a green but no growth, I water every other day, I am in a Zone 9A so we are getting in the hot season, morning sun, usually temps 95 to 115, I had a sold sample done and I was told to add limestone, if I mow my lawn my Honda plastic deck lawnmower only fills a 1/4 of the way, typical smaller front yard in Ca. maybe 800 sq ft. Any ideas?
I was sitting out front of the house Yesterday. I told myself I couldn't mow the lawn until I saw a NJ License plate. it wasn't 30 mins later and here came a car from NJ. Damn the bad luck. I had to mow.
I mow once every 10 days. But no way am I going to sharpen the blades every 4 mows. Ain't nobody got time for that! In fact, you're more likely to damage your mower with edge sharp blades if you hit something hard, both the mower and the blade. Maybe doing all of that would help if you had a freshly planted lawn in the first place....but in most places, most lawns are made of weeds and other stuff. And it's not just from bad mowing practice. The closer you are to wooded areas or properties where foliage is allowed to overgrow, you're going to end up with all kinds of stray weeds and stuff in your lawn as they spread, no matter how you mow. Most lawns aren't freshly planted. The vast majority of lawns have been around for over a century without digging up the soil and starting from scratch. In fact, a lot of stuff is left over from the depression era where people were growing anything they could to eat. So you see lawns with all kinds of wild herbaceous plants growing in it that we just keep cut short. Which I think is actually a good thing, because if there were ever a famine, all people would have to do is let their lawns grow and they'd find all sorts of edible stuff. Grass on the other hand, is America's biggest crop, and serves no other purpose but to give property a tidy uniform look.
I have a comment about sharpening your mower blade. First, I believe it is important to keep it sharp. Rather than sharpen a blade ever four weeks, I choose to have at least 2 if not 3 blades. Yes , it can get pricey if your own a lawn tractor with 3 blades, but, in the long run, it will save a bunch of time and keeping the mower cutting clean. We downsized to a smaller home and lot size, so I purchased a new 21" Honda self propelled mower, and with it I purchased 2 extra sets of blades. (This Honda has a two blade system.) So, I swap out the blade three times per season. I sharpen the one I took off, when I have nothing else to do. It only takes a couple minutes to remove and re install a blade set on a small mower. Sharpening and balancing a blade it not that big of a deal. I've found that a belt sander and file speeds up the process. Many years ago, I made a nice working balancing device. I just look at these things as part of taking care of the homestead. But, that's just me.
Very informative video thanks for the great tips 🙂👌.. why do you recommend for the blade option when cutting without the bag on a push mower ( regular or mulching blade ect..)?
If you have sharp mower blades you should be able to walk at a normal speed. As they get duller the lawn mower needs to move slower to cut the grass properly.
I just bought my first riding mower (John Deere S100) I’ve used a push mower for the past 11 years and have always mowed low. I have more weeds than grass it seems (crabgrass, dandelions, onions etc) if I start mowing at higher setting 3” will the grass naturally take over and snuff out the weeds overtime without having to use any weed/vegetation killer? Sorry I’m just a newbie at this
There is a lot more to controlling weeds and having the lawn choke out the weeds, but mowing the grass tall is one aspect in that formula. The formula for a great lawn in cool season grasses is to mow the grass tall, watering according to the 1-2-3-2-1 lawn watering technique and stimulate beneficial microbial activity in the soil by using organic products. This explanation probably didn't help but that is how to have a healthy lawn without having to use chemicals.
I only can dream of cutting our .70 acre of lawn once a week. Due to fertilizing, lawn irrigation and the periodic summer rains here in Michigan, I have to cut every 3 to 4 days. Being that I do not bag when cutting with my zero turn mower, there would be messy trails of grass if I were to let it go for a week before the next cut. I liked your video otherwise. Should I cut back on the fertilizer? We hit it with a spring fertilizer, a summer fertilizer and a winter fertilizer to give it a good start the following year.
this is going to sound stupid but do I also move the back wheel height ? Thank you .I think I'am mowing to short I have crab weeds and a lot of the little weeds that are white with stems. My husband passed away last year from cancer I should of watched him when he mowed
I am so sorry to hear about your husband. That is so difficult! Yes you need to adjust the mower height on all 4 wheels. Unfortunately we cannot help with the weeds unless you move to Colorado.
The taller the better for the majority of grass types. This doesn’t apply to Bermuda, Zoysia, and possibly Kentucky Blue Grass. St. Augustine and Turf type tall fescue should be mowed 4 in or higher.
5 " for me for now on this upsidedown blade the bolt heads rounded. Ive a sharpened mulch blade and a new finshcut blade but need a grinder and a new prop bolt.
Great video if you live in the southern states, try that 3 inch mow crap in the north and you'll be mowing every DAY!! Anywhere north of Penn and east of Ohio is considered the North for you non Geographical type.
Guaranteed this guy is mowing some type of tall fescue. Pretty much every warm season grass can be and should be mowed short and Kbg, rye, and bent can be mowed short if maintained properly.

Great video 👍🏻 you are correct sharpen your blades once a month 😁 and mow at 3 inches 😎
Thank you very much for an informative video, really helpful for me because its my first time cutting the lawn
Goodness I was mowing my yard completely 😱 wrong!!! Thank you.
Nice video…..why are the blades pushing over in the same direction a priblem
There wasn’t any mention of different types of grass being cut at different heights. I was told that fescue is cut high and zoysia is cut low. Most of the lawns my young son cuts in my neighborhood has zoysia. What are your thoughts on this? Thx! Great video!
This video was shot for our customers that live in Colorado. We don't have warm season grasses in this area.
@@stevehebert2189 Golf courses water their grass every night, that's why they get away with cutting it shorter.
@@Margalus no they don't that's a recipe for fungice disaster. They water in the morning 2-3 times a week.
This video has inspired me to concrete my whole back garden! 👌
That is a unique solution to mowing a lawn.
Another question, how many times can a blade typically be sharpened before it should be replaced? The new blades at Lowe’s etc. come with a dull edge. Are they good enough? Or do folks sharpen a brand new blade as well??
If you are sharpening a blade properly you should be able to get about 100-200 sharpening before it needs to be replaced.
That's great, you must be retired
@@swishy2028 Nope, I wish. Just take pride in what I have and dont want my lawn to look like straight up shit.
@@matthewhartup941 LOL
I paved my front yard. Blamed it on having too many kids. Really I just hate wasting gasoline on a sea of shit. Green or not.
Let me see it.
Quick to the point video. Subscribed! A question please. Is a hover mower a bad idea? Is it better to use the type of mower with wheels you are using in this video always better? Thanks in advance.
Sharpening the blades every 4 or 5 mows is a lot. Especially for commercial mowers. Some of those guys are mowing 4 or 5 lawns a day.
I live in Ireland, never have to water! But going to start leaving it grow a bit longer, great tip👍
Great video thanks for posting!
Is this for uk lawns aswell
I agree the taller grass looks better but if you and your kids play on it a lot, the shorter grass is much better and easier to run around on.
Do these tips (especially height of cut) apply to all grass types? Looks like you have some type of Fescue, I have Bermuda. Thanks.
Our recommendations are for cool season grasses. We do not know much about warm season grasses so it is best to consult a warm season grass expert about Bermuda grasses.
great video. think it does depend on the grass, but good explanation none the less
3 “ is my settings for years. No weeds.
Thanks buddy. Very helpful
Excellent video, clear and with enough information and graphics
I cut mine 2 inches and its nice, 3 inches looks too long
I mow on a 2 1/2. Is that bad? Do I need to raise or can I keep it at a 2.5 and get the same results?
Any ideas?
Great video and subscribed, gave a thumb's up. Learned a lot!
My lawn mower's owner's manual has a picture of the height each notch puts it at.
"Sharpen blade every 4 mows"......hahahaha Yeah, like THAT'S gonna happen.
Probably not, but that is best. Most people sharpen their blades once every 30-40 years. haha
The blades on my riding mower didn't get sharpened until the mower was 9 years old.
Was thinking the same thing.
Thank you for t Sharing all the info!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏
@@CuriousKL I use Toro or Craftsman Atomic Blades. They cut even, obliterate cuttings, stay sharp, and allow the mower to burn less fuel.
You did outstanding Brad! 😁
Very informative video thanks for the great tips 🙂👌.. why do you recommend for the blade option when cutting without the bag on a push mower ( regular or mulching blade ect..)?
Mulching blade
should you walk slow with the mower or fast? or doesn't that part matter too much?
What kind of grass are you cutting? I was told to cut my zoysia 3/4 to 2 inches.
This video is for cool season grasses like bluegrasses and fescue. Not sure about mowing of warm season grasses.
I've got a sit-on lawnmower, How do you sharpen the blades and how often?
We are probably going to defer to the owner's manual for that one.
Great tips including to change directions, people forget that!
My lawn mover does not have 3 inch option only below max 55mm min 20mm
I only can dream of cutting our .70 acre of lawn once a week. Due to fertilizing, lawn irrigation and the periodic summer rains here in Michigan, I have to cut every 3 to 4 days. Being that I do not bag when cutting with my zero turn mower, there would be messy trails of grass if I were to let it go for a week before the next cut. I liked your video otherwise. Should I cut back on the fertilizer? We hit it with a spring fertilizer, a summer fertilizer and a winter fertilizer to give it a good start the following year.
Do I need a leaf blower to start a lawn mowing other peoples yard
this is going to sound stupid but do I also move the back wheel height ? Thank you .I think I'am mowing to short I have crab weeds and a lot of the little weeds that are white with stems. My husband passed away last year from cancer I should of watched him when he mowed
I am so sorry to hear about your husband. That is so difficult! Yes you need to adjust the mower height on all 4 wheels. Unfortunately we cannot help with the weeds unless you move to Colorado.
@@OrganoLawn do I move both wheels at same height ?
@@esmeraldacano2292 That is correct
The taller the better for the majority of grass types. This doesn’t apply to Bermuda, Zoysia, and possibly Kentucky Blue Grass. St. Augustine and Turf type tall fescue should be mowed 4 in or higher.
5 " for me for now on this upsidedown blade the bolt heads rounded. Ive a sharpened mulch blade and a new finshcut blade but need a grinder and a new prop bolt.
This blade on my troy push is bent cracked and upside down but I got a good cut
Great video if you live in the southern states, try that 3 inch mow crap in the north and you'll be mowing every DAY!! Anywhere north of Penn and east of Ohio is considered the North for you non Geographical type.
Wish me luck I’m about to try it :)
Guaranteed this guy is mowing some type of tall fescue. Pretty much every warm season grass can be and should be mowed short and Kbg, rye, and bent can be mowed short if maintained properly.
5/22/20 6:42p.m. Hey, I hear you I mow for the Arc of Crew Labor Chestnut Ridge Center here in Turnersville,New Jersey we're just out on state of emergency because of the covid-19 which really sucks and hopefully we can all get back to work soon either this next month June or July but nothing is set in stone and I am a really good mower I take my time I get it done right and I kill it like Nike! Please pass the word on thank you and have a nice day.,1:04
Mowing high is the only way for me. Looks amaing in my opinion and when I edge it up, oh sweet heavens.....
Great information ! Thanks

Not gonna lie, when he showed the two lawns, I think the 2" lawn looked better.
