Adapting a 60s Bungalow in the UK for Disabled Access for a 6 year old boy with Cerebral Palsy

  • Isaac has just turned 6 and he has Cerebral Palsy. Lifting and carrying him regularly causes both myself and my wife back problems. Door thresholds, narrow corridors and sharp turns in our house make wheelchair use difficult. Disability impacts on every area of life and makes small things you used to take for granted difficult. We couldn’t put off making adaptions to the house any longer.
We are learning that special needs raise many extra challenges in getting building work done correctly. Things can get very expensive very quickly, but thankfully in the UK our local council provides significant funding originating from the public tax pot towards adaptive works, and can project manage certain things.
We don’t want our house to feel clinical so in some areas we are opting to pay extra or self manage the works to hopefully get a better result. This is all very challenging alongside dealing with the significant day to needs of Isaac, and the rest of our family, while running a growing joinery business (designing and making fitted furniture). Over last few weeks Isaac has been in and out of hospital for brain surgery and other issues in the midst of it all - as everyone knows it’s especially stressful when the secure haven of a place to relax at home is turned upside down for a period!
I began this quick video update as a way to let my long term subscribers know what we’ve been up to and some of the reasons why it’s harder to find time to make UA-cam videos lately (though I AM now working on a couple of new build video edits!). The video may have wider appeal to others dealing with disability who are considering their options for adapting their house for accessibility, including door widening, thresholds, outdoor lift, and a wetroom bathroom.

Man, you could make an entire channel on ‘standard’ disability adaptation practices, and then your take on maximizing/optimizing each one, and I’d watch the heck out of it. Seems that much of the usability hinges on such subtle details- and Lord knows us viewers love a good detail. Keep on trucking!

Do you have a personal interest in disability adaptations, or do you think it’s of interest generally? This is what I’ve been wondering, how much more to cover it on my channel - it’s a bit niche (but important to me!)

@@Alastair_Freebird Just dropped in to your channel and really would like to see how you manage to get your house ready for a wheelchair. I have a 4 year old disabled girl and currently building a wooden wheelchair ramp (5 steps (1.05m height), the ramp will be with a u-turn-platform and overall length around 7.5m). Building-for-disabled-videos are rare on youtube. It is a niche, but you would perfectly fit into if you`d make it a little diy-educational.
      Greetings from Germany.

@@__Timo__ Hi! This is exactly the sort of message I hoped I might receive when making this video. Are you on Instagram? Perhaps find me and private message me there. Then we could whatsapp, I could show you a few other things I've learned, it's an ongoing process for us but with isaac being a few years older (he just turned 7), maybe I can give so helpful pointers.

Brilliant job on the house. Nothing like adding a renovation to the mix, when you already have a full time job and full time family. Wishing you all well as everything moves along.

Thanks so much for sharing the video, I finally found the one I was looking for!
We're excitedly waiting for our council house, and we've been told it will be fully adapted for our needs.
I was wondering if you'd be willing to share your experience with adapting your home for your children's needs. Specifically, it would be really helpful to know:
What types of adaptations did the council allow or provide?
Were there any additional adaptations you found helpful to add yourself?
Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

I thought the little boy in the cover photo was a child who went to my children's school. He looks just like him when he was little. But strangely though he's also called Isaac.
