YES! You cannot bleed the brakes without the scan software!!! It will set off a Thousand Alarms and Lights and your braking WILL be majorly compromised.
Thanks for sharing from a fellow Camry Hybrid owner. How many miles are on your car? I'm at 103k on mine, and I thought I heard a squeak today, so this video will come very handy.
Only if they are warped or thin. A pulsing pedal is a good sign of a warped rotor. You can have a garage try to turn the rotor for you on a brake lathe or just buy new rotors. (what I normally do) I have done the rotors on two other Toyotas, a 99 Tacoma and a 96 Rav 4. It isn't a tough job. I have videos of both of those jobs in my video library here.
Great video. Is it necessary to bleed the system when replacing brake pads and rotors? I read a comment on another related video where people started getting dash warning lights after pads replacement also for a Toyota Hybrid. Someone responded/recommended that the Computer Hydraulic Brake System Bleed had to be done. I am in the process of ordering the parts for a DIY brake job, but wanted to make sure first. This is for a 2008 Camry Hybrid with approx 98k miles. Any input/advise will be greatly appreciated. Thanks and God Bless!
I did not have to bleed the lines but it is possible you have to depending on how the pedal feels afterward. If it's soft and spongy then you probably have some air in the line.
Pro-tip. Check your brakes visually regularly. Mine have been quiet but today I went in for an alignment and after, the concerned tech asked if I had noticed that my rotors were worn like a vinyl. Needless to say I will be referencing this video tomorrow.
Supposedly, hybrids have the risk of the brake actuator activating on their own. Did you do anything to address this such as disconnecting the 12V battery to disable the computer?
You are correct and when I filmed this I wasn't aware of that potential problem. When I did the same job on my 2007 Prius I disconnected the 12V battery for that reason.
These cars have TOTAL ELECTRONIC BRAKING!!!!!!!........meaning you need Diagnostic Software JUST to bleed the brakes!!! And the ABS modules are KNOWN for failure.....meaning you Lose braking and probably crash. I WISH I would have known about this Before buying!!! The car has been awesome.... up until my ABS module failed!!(luckily I was only doing 10mph and only lost 50% braking power............sure it's Not too hard of a job to swap the Unit, and the Diagnostic Software is only $20.......but it's HIGHLY UNSAFE!!! I'm seriously spooked now!!!
@@alfredocarrillo2433 Google Techstream software. You can get the version 12 free with special code to bypass the Toyota required activation. Or pay $12 for the newest version15 with activation by pass. Also you need to buy Mini VCI cable to connect your laptop to the OND port. Amazon has it for $40 with the software
Thank you for being informative and kind. Definitely not a video for beginners like me, so much terminology!
Hope it helped!
Nice Vid ...great lighting...keep them vids coming...
Thanks for the video even though it's 8 years old it still helped me out.
Glad it helped!
Thanks. I too was wondering if there was a difference with the hybrid brakes. This video helped with that.

I noticed you didn't replace the rotors, is that not usually necessary?

Mine has around 105k at this point. Pads were changed in the mid 90's.
Thanks buddy!
Thank you for sharing this video. Since it a hybrid car you worked on, any difference between the hybrid and non hybrid brake pads?
I am not sure but hybrid brakes should last much longer because of regen braking.
You cannot bleed hybrid car just like a regular gasoline one. You need a scanner to activate the process.

Good tip
I wonder if you still have the hybrid Camry!
I own a hybrid to!
Nope got rid of that awhile ago but it was a great car.

Yes you are right. Always disconnect the negative from battery
But a good video BTW.
No the car was off. I think it would be ok to do it either way.
did you turn on the car before you pumped the brakes to reseat the pads?
hotbenny1313 same question
is it the same for a 2009 camery hybrid
As far as I know nothing changed with the brakes on a 2009.
and i won't get electrocuted
Car was traded in for a new Volt last week. :)
Dufisthenics how's the Volt been? Does the electricity bill rapidly increase at home?
Your pads have uneven worn out. You may need to check that!!!
Why did you even bother changing those pads? They were 90% good.
Agreed, but I had new ones so I threw them in.
I don't think you need any pads. And they look like better than the new ones in quality. Lol 😆
I agree.
