Hey there, non union DIT here, dragging and dropping files is pretty frowned upon in the industry especially in my job. You would want a couple of softwares to do things the right way: a offloading tool with hopefully checksums built into it (shotput pro), possibly a LTO tool (yoyotta), transcode software (handbrake), a disk recovery tool (disk drill pro), and a safe mag formatting software (parashoot). For proper DIT work on set you would need a lot more, but for data management this is a good start. Its important to have at least one of each of the softwares I said earlier, especially diskdrill, you dont need it until you NEED it lol. Best of luck boys!

The problem I'm running into is when I copy the SD card over to the drive so my reporter can start editing, then I have to take the SD card and shoot more stuff (but forget to format the card), how do get just the new stuff into the hard drive with the other footage without copying *everything* over again? Its .MXF and I can't just drag video clips because audio is recorded into separate folder on the card and Adobe magically links them as long as everything there.

Getting more SD cards would be a solution. Have them all formatted so you do not need to shoot on the same card on the same day. If you do shoot on the same SD card that has been transferred and not formatted, you could use a backup software like ChronoSync. The software reads the destination drive and reads your SD card. It will find the new files on the SD card and transfer over the newer files.

Or just get in the hsabit of formatting the SD card once it's been transferred. Or you may be able to set yoour camera up to shoot .mov or .mp4.

I know this is an old comment, but something you can do if you don't want to use third-party software and are using a Mac is the terminal command rsync. That will check what has already been copied and only copy over what has not. Also, it will check using SHA to make sure things are copied bit by bit. As per the formatting of the card, a tip I took from a camera operator and DIT was that after the card has been backed up, the DIT will format the SD card on the computer, causing the camera to put up an error when attempting to put the card back in, which then forces the camera operator to format the card before recording again on the same SD card.
I hope that helps. Sorry once again for the reply to an old comment. I just found this video myself (great video, btw).
