    Would love to see more advanced topics covered in this same granular detail. On-set video distribution; live color grading, transcoding workflows, etc.

    Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. As a one man band documentary maker, my new motto to any assistants I work with will be: Stick to the system! I lost a card's data through my own error while hurriedly changing (actually not changing) out cards in the field during a hectic documentary day a few months ago... Every lost shot I lost still haunts me...

    Just a recommendation for everyone. Try the software parashoot for formating your cards. It is free for MacOS and it doesn't format the mag itself just the first bits, so the captured data becomes unreadable. With that, if you put it in a camera you have to format the mag in camera and are sure it is formated correctly for the camera.
    If you you erased the mag wrongly with parashoot you will be able to restore the files on the mag with parashoot again. Happy DITing everyone :)

    Thanks for great video. Question if it’s OK? I thought the three backups have to be done from the camera card/mag, to stop any possible corruption occurred during transfer being copied to backups? I believe Hedge has Mac software that can transfer data from one mag to three or more places, including tape? Thanks, C

    • @learndit922
      @learndit922  9 місяців тому +1

      You are correct.. In fact, most backup software will do one source to many. It's been a problem of data transfer rates up until the new Thunderbolt connection. With a T-bolt hub you can move data to three backups faster than the camera card will transfer. Ahhh, changing technology is a wonderful thing.

    Where do you log the total data copied from? When you check the files that have been copied, do you manually verify the file size is the same or rely on the checksum?

    • @learndit922
      @learndit922  7 місяців тому +1

      I typically rely on what the checksum indicates. I do eyeball a file now and then to see if there's a problem.

    I would love to take you and your course seriously but it's flash based. Up 'till now, I have avoided installing flash for all the right reasons but, I wanted to see your stuff. All the installer it did was lead me on a wild goose chase of download and install and then update which downloaded the installer again etc.
    Flash is finally dead and gone for sure at the end of this year. Now is time to jump ship to something more suitable. Sigh. Now to root out any of the Flash crud littering my system.

      Leo... sorry about that. I have no control over the course website underpinnings. And I agree with you on Flash. I will bring this up with the platform provider. I think they are already working on something.

    have you ever had a cfast card fail or any card for that matter? would you suggest any recovery software for this? or is it always best to contact a data recovery center immediately. this is one step i never had to face but always worry could happen.

    • @mindytrim5169
      @mindytrim5169 3 роки тому +1

      I have had a variety of cards fail. It does happen. I have had great success with Disk Drill and RecovRX. When those fail You can have a conversation concerning a recovery service, but they are very expensive and often use the same programs. Always alert production when a card fails and keep them updated on what is recoverable. Depending on the project it often is cheaper to re-shoot that scene.

    Great video! I don’t follow all of your tips, mind you I’ve been trained in slightly different and using offload programs I generate my own reports for both production and post so I don’t use a notebook or spreadsheet. But really great beginner video for anyone looking to start in data management! Thank you for your work on all your videos.

    Thanks for this video, it is very informative. By formatting the card and putting it in the red bin, don't you risk the chance of your backup disk failing? Wouldn't it be better to double backup before returning the card?

    • @learndit922
      @learndit922  Рік тому +2

      Good point. In reality, I and most do several backups of a card at the same time. It would be a really rare situation where a DIT or Data Manager would be forced to release a card back to set with only one checksummed backup. That's a stressful position to be forced on you. If you have drives, hubs, and card readers that have fast connections, making 3 backups at the same time, takes not much longer than a single one nowadays.

    • @NOMOFilms
      @NOMOFilms Рік тому

      @@learndit922 Thanks for the response. Would you typically make a secondary backup from the original card or just duplicate the checksummed backup? I guess if it's checksummed on the secondary backup it shouldn't matter?

    • @learndit922
      @learndit922  Рік тому +1

      @@NOMOFilms you are correct. Once you have a mirror backup, you can make the others off that. Ideally, all 3 backups should come from the camera original.

    This is a great basic tutorial for data management, but I feel like some of the techniques are a little dated or a little incomplete. I don't believe in reformatting cards in utility myself in preference of using apps like Parachute or deleting redmag bins to prompt a card to be formatted in camera. Also I don't format a card until we shoot through all the media in our possession. I understand everyone has their own etiquette. Logging by hand is great to start out with but most DM softaware with extensive offload logs has pretty much taken care of that.

    • @learndit922
      @learndit922  4 роки тому +2

      Jaime, Good points. You have struck on some finer points of card workflows that are covered in more detail in the on-line course and the DIT book. That being said, the book weighs in at 530 pages already and is targeted at the person starting out, so without making it a real monster, some stuff gets left out or skimmed over. Stuff that I would cover in a seminar, live interaction setting. Great input from someone who is doing it... and I appreciated you commenting here, sharing.
