  • Most videos don't go into detail about what it takes to reverse engineer a somewhat complex part. In this video, we show you in 5 minutes the 3-hour workflow to 3D scan and reverse engineer a sand cast part.

    Yeah man. When my company first started reverse engineering from scans, there was not a lot of content out there. The salesmen promised amazing accuracy and the pros reported even better tolerances... But it took me a long time to realize it's more of an art. And there is a definite difference between being accurate and capturing design intent. Anyone promising a parametric model of an injection-molded part completely within .004" is either a god or a liar.

      Agree. Most of the time the part you are scanning, especially plastic parts, are no where near the design intent. Shrink, warping, heat deflection, assembly deformation all play havoc on the part. Knowing what the CAD model should be can be a real challenge.

      I'm wanting to get a scan of rare car part made, I'm hoping I can afford it. My goal is to get it scanned and CAD made, even if I cant get the physical part made at this time. The plan is, if its in the computer I'll have it, then when I can afford to have the physical part made or split the cost with some other gear heads like me. I have the RARE part now, took over 10 years to find and purchase. LOL

    So glad to see this video,
    I have superiors who think you sit down and within some minutes, boom! your Reversed engineered CAD Model is ready...its very challenging, explaining to them that it doesn't work way.

      Agree most people don't understand what it takes to reverse engineer a part from scan data which was the intent of this video. Another great video that demonstrates this is this video ua-cam.com/video/CnxFJ246YoQ/v-deo.html

      We feel its important that people understand what is involved in 3D scanning and more importantly what it takes to turn scan data into CAD data.

    I've used a CMM arm to reverse engineer parts, but the CMM software set your X,Y and Z planes but I could never get a radius endpoint to touch and be tangent with a straight line on any plane.

      CMM's are great for inspection but yes can be more of a challenge for reverse engineering especially on complex parts.

    This is most definitely a point that is lost on a number of people. There is, for sure, a skillset in scanning parts properly, and indeed in using other measurement techniques to reerse engineer a part as scanning is not the be all, and end all of data gathering techniques. That all said getting the data is one thing but knowng what to do with that data is completely another.

    Hello sir, my name is rajan Patel and i am see your video of scan to cad it's really help for me.
    Sir want to know how much annual income of reverse engineering designer as a fresher ? Pls. Sir give me the ans. When you show my comments.

      Hi Rajan, If I understand your question you are asking how much an engineer would make doing reverse engineering. That amount would vary greatly by location, industry, experience, etc. I would suggest looking at career web sites like Indeed.com, Glassdoor.com or similar in your country. Many of those sites will list annual income ranges for mechanical engineers. Our employees are all mechanical engineers.

    I dont have scanner, my company expect me to reverse engineer plastic parts thats move a lot with 0.01 accuracy, and want it to be in few days without a single error. taking measurement is hard and then they simply check it and moving it around and simply tell this part is 1mm larger, do it again. Their measurement process are also questionable. I took lots of measurement and try to figure the design intent and they simply just said the measurement is incorrect hello.

      Hi Toronto, we can provide 3D scanning and reverse engineering to you as a service if that helps. If you wanted us to quote your project send a couple pictures of the part to info@ems3d.com

    why not just use calipers and a notepad?
    I don't understand why 3d scan when you have to remake the part anyway.

      @EMS3D  Рік тому +2

      Hi SS, the more complicated the part the faster and more accurate a 3D scanner is going to be.
