    My bff owns 6 rats, 3 boys and 3 girls; Honey, Oliver, Murphy (boys) Amethyst, Lace, Poppy (girls) and she teaches them weird tricks. one is 'type rat' as in, she taught Lace (just lace) how to put her paws on the laptop keys r, a, and t in that order by running around the keyboard edge and booping a key.

      For treats I usually use cheerios broken into fourths or gerber puffs broken into fifths. I'll also give meat baby food if the rats are getting frustrated. I give my rats veggies and fruit in the cage, as they take too long for the rats to eat while training (although they very much love eating them! XD)

    now that's some awesomely motivated rats. it's so nice to see someone actually takes time to bond with their rats & train them :3 and what are you unable to feel pain or something? i mean, they literally climb up your NAKED LEG, it hurts! we must have really different legs. my rat cant even climb my leg easily without clothes on :D

      One of my rats learned to climb inside my shirt using only her claws grabbing the shirt itself. I think she learned this mostly cause I shook and pulled away if she scratched my skin, so she figured out a new way to get to my shoulder (her favorite place to be.) Really miss her. Great video! You motivated me to get another after a year hiatus :)

      My female rats were always able to climb up my legs without any problem. When my male tried it, it hurt. I figure it was because he weighed more, so he had to dig his claws in deeper to keep from falling.

    I had a pet hamster when I started teaching 22 years ago - it was a 5th grade class of kids, and they wanted a hamster. So, I went to the pet store and got a cute Teddy Bear hamster. Well! On the first day with the kids, it bit one kid, then it bit me! So I returned it to the pet store. There, an older man with a rat on his shoulder advised me to get a pet rat instead of a replacement hamster. I was skeptical. But he was right! Templeton the rat was the best pet for the kids and me in the classroom! My little rat was friendly, smart, and liked to play. We did not train him, but he was lots of fun! This video is quite amazing ! Thanks for posting.

    I was a rat owner and absolutely fell in love with them. I love how smart and clever and affectionate they are. Mine loved to give rattie kisses and my roomie taught them how to go down shirts, which they loved to do...hell the only time i was nipped (never bit) was by a male with poor eyesight (a ruby eyed) and that's because i forgot to wash my hands after handling food and well yeah...lol that ones on me :) I miss my ratties v.v...anyhoo great job on healthy, happy lil Squeakers.

    How did you teach em' to unzip a zipper?!

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  7 років тому +1

      Creeper Universe Pretty much the same way you'd train a dog. Using a clicker, click and reward them for touching the zipper, then for mouthing it (biting it), then for placing pressure on it, then for slightly pulling, then for greater amounts of pulling, and finally for pulling more than one time. I believe zipper training is included in my How to Train a Rat to be a "Rat Burglar" (Training a rat to "rob" a purse) tutorial at this link: m.ua-cam.com/video/v-ro802bkTs/v-deo.html. The hardest part is gettin them to bite the zipper, and after that it's pretty easy to get them to pull it.

      Paula gordon Thanks! And no, age doesn't matter. As long as your rats are still mobile and food motivated, training is fun for all ages! Just look at Shadow. She's 2.6/2.7 years old, and still learns new tricks daily. In fact, I'd say it's easier to train an older rat, as they have more focus and a much longer attention span.

    I loved all your adorable rats tricks!! I have just got two from the humane society and they are cuties. Do your rats remember all their tricks and how long does it take them to learn them. Do you work with them everyday? Thanks for sharing!!

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  6 років тому

      Thanks :)
      They do tend to remember the tricks for ridiculously long periods of time, even without practice. For example, I take a month long vacation trip yearly, and every time I return the rats still remember exactly what we worked on before I left, as well as all their other long-standing tricks. If the trick is a new skill and we only practice it for a day or so, they will "forget" it fairly quickly if I don't do any follow up sessions. But even if they do seem to "forget" the trick, it usually only takes 5 minutes of "reminder" training and they'll be doing the trick proficiently again.
      I do work with my rats daily, as for me its a "stress relief" action of sorts. Training is fun and easy (usually lol) with rats, as the smart little guys are very intuitive and pick up tricks super fast. Most tricks take less than 10 minutes for the rats to learn (to give perspective, spin takes maybe 2 minutes to initially learn, paw takes maybe 30 seconds, backup takes maybe 2 minutes, and fetch depends on the rat - it can take anywhere from 10 minutes to a few days), and once the rat in question knows the "basics" (spin, paw, backup, come, fetch, basketball), adding other tricks and combining previous know skills become a piece of cake.
      I've never trained dogs, but I would liken it to people's experience with training some of the more intuitive dogs. The ratties are always trying to figure out what I want ahead of time, and if I'm too slow they might just cycle through what they know in hopes of guessing :P
      Anyway, I find training to be a pretty fun activity, and an easy way for me to bond with all my rats. It helps the less "people oriented" rats realize that humans aren't so threatening, and it helps give mental stimulation and contentedness to all my rats. I'd almost liken rats to little toddlers, constantly getting into trouble if not occupied. If I didn't train my rats daily, they'd decimate their free-range area, chewing up the carpet and the cardboard fence I use to prevent other trouble. But if I do a good 30 or so minutes of training daily, the rat in question will usually be content to just run around some afterwards, and then settle down for a nap.
      And if it helps lift the stigma about rats being "dirty, stupid animals", well, then that's all the better! :)

    This video is so encouraging! We have a 6 month old fancy rat. She has been with our family for 3 months but is hesitant to come out of her cage. Do you have any advice? We try to get her out in the evenings after our children are asleep so they do not spook her but she is still scared despite trying treats, etc.

      Skye Nusbickel If possible, I really recommend getting her a same gender friend. Rats are super social animals, and do best when living with other rats. Another rat will help make her more confident, especially if the other rat is confident itself. In this video, the fawn (yellowish) colored rat Sonic was super skittish towards anyone. But I was able to get her tame enough to train tricks within weeks, simply because she followed Shadow, my other rat, everywhere. Shadow was confident and playful with people, and she would happily come over to anyone. Sonic would follow her, and gradually learned from Shadow that people were ok (in a way I could have never taught her).
      Otherwise, I recommend feeding meat baby food on a metal spoon. Your rat will learn to lick up the meat baby food (which rats all seem to adore), and then you can place it on your hands. She will then lick it from your hands, and as it's a liquid treat, she won't be able to run away with it (thus eating it next to your hands, and forming a positive association with them).
      You can also try the bathrobe/hoody method, where you simply place the rat into a hoody or bathrobe (I recommend a hoody), and let them crawl around it for 30+ minutes (I'd recommend around an hour if possible). This teaches the rat to view your clothing (and by extension, you) as a safe spot, and is one of the most effective way to tame a skittish rat. Simply repeat this method at least once a day, and your skittish girl will learn to love coming out.
      And after you've done some hoody training, you can begin free ranging in a rat proof area. After that, it gets harder to keep the rats in the cage than get them out :P

      Alieena Amos Wafer paper, an edible rice paper. It's probably one of the healthiest treats out there, and the rats seem to like it.

    Your rats are so smart, what treats do you feed them to train them ? I'm scared of mine getting fat from so many treats :)

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  7 років тому

      I usually feed wafer paper, as it is healthy and not fattening, but Shadow in particular goes crazy for millet spray (a bird treat) as well, which is also not fattening. Other healthy options are small pieces of fruits and veggies (be careful not to feed too many as this can cause diarrhea), and gerber baby puffs. I also feed meat baby food, however, this can be fattening if fed too much. Have fun training your rats!

      +Shadow The Rat your welcome. Question...I'm sure each trick is separate but does it take long to train a rat? I'm seriously considering in getting 1 (well 2) and I'm wondering if it take long/effort to see results

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  7 років тому +2

      It's actually very easy to train rats. As an example, the first trick I taught my rat Latte was fetch, which we started training the day I got her, and that took three days of 5-10 minute sessions. All of my rats have also learned paw within five minutes, and spin within a few days. And yes, please get two or more rats of the same gender, as they are a very social species. Having more then one rat also makes training easier, as I find that my rats will imitate each other when they see their friend getting a treat. So in short, rats are generally easy to train, and awesome pets!

    Thank you so much for this video! I am using this video in a power point for school (and me!) My dad is skeptical about getting a rat so my mom (who loves rats also) told me I could do a power point on them and show it to him. I am trying to stress more on their cleanliness and intelligence (along with cuteness!!) so he might be more apt to letting me get one (the companion would be my sisters.) Do you have any advice for convincing skeptical parents? Happy holidays!!

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  6 років тому

      Thank you :)
      Although you may want to use a different video that's filmed in full screen. At the time of making this, I stuck to filming vertically, something I regret.
      Here is a good example of Shadow doing her tricks filmed in landscape: ua-cam.com/video/AV9z0c1hjnA/v-deo.html
      And if you want a different rat example, here's a video of another rat (Blackberry) performing her best tricks: ua-cam.com/video/lhWF8lvxCpI/v-deo.html
      As for convincing your dad, perhaps my video on the pros and cons of rats could help? The main points I discuss are how sociable, clean, intelligent, cuddly, and sweet rats can be. However, I also discuss downsides such as smell, vet costs, and a short lifespan (although this one might be helpful in convincing him - since rats live such a short life, even if he ends up disliking them he won't have to live with them for a decade or longer (as would be the case with dogs or cats)). - ua-cam.com/users/edit?o=U&video_id=9H5w-0kM-CY
      And if he likes dogs, I also made a video with clips of my girls acting very dog like - they share many traits, from there love of chewing up tennis balls to their love of being interacted with: ua-cam.com/users/edit?o=U&video_id=SCbyXCC8OWY
      If your able to get him to met a friendly rat or two, that might also be a huge plus. Videos are great as well, but I know first hand how showing videos over and over to someone who's uninterested in the subject can be annoying. What I did when convincing my dad was to initially show my mom (an animal (including rats!) lover like your's) lots of short cute videos showing off cuddly or trained rats while my dad was in the room. This way, he'd come over and see on his own instead of feeling pestered into it. I also brought up the ways rats have benefited humanity by looking up their use in labs and inputting facts into dinner conversation. My dad is very intellectual based, so he admires people/animals that show obvious learning capability and that are willing to perform. So showing him trick videos (and later training my own rats) helped me convince him to let me have some rats, and later on, convinced him to let me keep them (he really disliked their slight smell at first, but after a year or so he adjusted).
      Good luck! Rats can be awesome little pets, and I can't imagine my life without them :)

    • @GretchASketch__
      @GretchASketch__ 6 років тому

      thank you! I did watch the video about the pro's and con's about rats! It was very helpful! Its not that he doesn't like rats, he just thinks they are very destructive (which they can be). And the rats would be kept in my room most of the time unless I will be shoulder training them and showing them off to my younger siblings. My dad isn't around the house much due to him having alot of stuff to do after work, so the video thing won't work. But my mom says that by doing a power point it would convince him enough to let me and my sister get rats because it would show that we (or at least I XD) spent hours (no joke.) doing this. I was thinking that after I finish the power point I do an animatic/animated video with all the information I gathered so others could see. My dad wouldn't mind rats too much, he just doesn't want us to get any and then get bored with them and having the poor animals not be taken care of properly. But I have been watching your videos as a bit of referance and such. Me and my sister would only really be getting two rats (one for me and one for her). We were thinking of getting dumbos ^^

    Do they remember all/most of the tricks? Or do they forget some of them when they learn a bunch of new ones?
    By the way what you do with your rats is awesome

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  7 років тому

      Thanks! So far as I can tell, they seem to remember all their tricks. When I went on a two month vacation a while back, Shadow still remembered how to fetch and play basketball (her most complex tricks at the time), despite not have practicing them at all while I was gone. For more complex tricks like pushing a shopping cart, which took Shadow weeks to grasp, she was able to remember the motions months after last practicing it, and after a refresher session, she was able to easily add on to the trick. However, I bet if I stopped training the rats altogether, they would eventually forget all their tricks. As I'm always adding on to the girls old tricks, they don't really have a reason to forget any.

    Shadow seems very intelligent. How long does it take to learn a new trick?

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  7 років тому

      Practically no time at all at this point. Even in this video, most tricks were learned in one or two 5-10 minute sessions. Once a rat has down the basics (which for item tricks are fetch and basketball), adding extra steps like opening a drawer or a mailbox is pretty easy. It helps that Shadow is super food motivated, and actually enjoys learning new tricks as well.

      AE V Its actually a GoGo squeeze applesauce lid, which I often fill with applesauce or other liquid treats. It's easy for the rats to hold, and in the case of painting, makes an excellent paintbrush handle!
