Hello from Oklahoma! I guess You could say this song had a pretty big infuence on me. I had a cutlass supreme when this song came out. After listening to C.W. music for awhile on my eight track, I traded my cutlass in for a 1975 CJ5. Boy was that a fun rig! Had a winch up front big lift big tires. I'm on my 10 th jeep now. It'll probably be my last one. I'm an old man now, but can still wheel! God Bless!

I'm sorry for your lose . I'm sure you went through hell growing up with out him . I'm sure it ripped your whole family up too . I know all to well how it is to loose a loved one from accidents . Its makes it much harder to deal with then a long Illness . And I know how that is too been through it both ways . It Sucks. But just remember that our Loved ones are with us for life in our hearts . Cool video. I will start rebuilding my 57 CJ 5 this summer, right after I get my 1952 M38A1 running. Those old four bangers were not built for speed. CJ 5 engines were the Willys Hurricane F head 4 cyl, Buick 225 Dauntless, 192 Perkins diesel in Britain, AMC's 232,258 and 304. In the 80s it came with GMs Iron Duke. I spent a good part of high school riding right by the Nishnabotna river on my dirt bikes. It was fun to cruise down the levee. He said a yard wide foot deep but it’s really quite a bit bigger then that.
It was also popular to get a cooler and float down the river with beer and get picked up at a bridge. Cool discovering this.

We is screamin' through the valley
    Where the nishnabotna flows
Through the mud and crud and cornfields
    Where the mari-ju-wana grows
'cross the railroad tracks of persia
Down the hills and up the dale
    Had a cj-5 with a four-wheel drive
    And smokey on my tail.
Well, he picked me up at exit 12
    On the i-six-eighty ramp
    I was doin' 67 per
When I rumbled through his trap
He commenced to whirl his flashin' lights
And he made his siren wail
I slipped on down to four-wheel drive
    With smokey on my tail
Now I got racin' stripes and dual pipes
    And smokey's got a ford
Got a mill with a four pot carb, you know
    But smokey's stroked and bored
Well, the chase was on, but I had the edge
With a rig that'll never fail
    Got a cj-5 with a four-wheel drive
    And smokey on my tail
    Yeah, he was.
Well, I dropped on down to granny low
And I made a hard right turn
My big ol' fat commando tires
    Went slashin' through the corn
    Well, the tassels blew
    And the kernels flew
And it looked like yella hail
Just cookin' alive in a four-wheel drive
    With smokey on my tail
Well, we went screamin' through the valley
    Where the nishnabotna flows
Through the mud and crud and cornfields
    Where the mari-ju-wana grows
'cross the railroad tracks of persia
Up the hills and down the dales
    My cj-5 with four-wheel drive
    And smokey on my tail.
Look out, now. here he come.
Oh, we gonna get it on now.
(don't hit that fella with the banjo.)
We gonna swim this here creek now, smokey. [pronounced crick, of course.]
Yard wide and a foot deep.
    Nishnabota river, they call it.
    Might haveta winch out.
Gonna do a wheelie on that there gopher mound now, smokey.
    Can you dig it, smokey?
Got four on the floor and four in the air on that one, didn't we?
Goodness gracious. 'bout ta bust my shocks.
Well, that jeep of mine made smokey whine
His rig was made of lead
He was mired in fourteen feet of mud
    So he radioed ahead
I pulled up onto the blacktop
Went crashin' on through the rail
Sakes alive! I had twenty-five more
    Smokeys on my tail!
Now I had racin' stripes and dual pipes
    And smokey had a ford
Had a mill with a four pot carb, you know
    But smokey's stroked and bored
Well, the race was on, but I had the edge

Mccall is a fantastic, versatile, lyrisist/storyteller from Roses for Mamma or Sing Silent Night (which you need a tissue for) to Ghosttown and Aurora borealis, to the fun songs: Lewis and Clark, Crispy Critters and may more. I love this song, you dont know whether to laugh, keep your foot tapping or bop to the music .It sounds like something that came from the (Dukes of Hazzard) except they never seem to go to jail. @orcanjus Wikipedia: "The Nishnabotna River is a tributary of the Missouri River in southwestern Iowa, northwestern Missouri and southeastern Nebraska in the United States. It flows for most of its length as two parallel streams in Iowa, the East Nishnabotna River and the West Nishnabotna River. The east and west branches are each about 120 miles (190 km) long; from their confluence the Nishnabotna flows approximately another 16 miles (26 km)."

we was parked up on the top of Brushy MNT.in my friends old CJ-5 smokeing a big fat number once and we had pulled up on the top of the big cliff above I77 and old us rt52 when the cops came they was down below yelling at us to get down off that cliff before we went over the side and dropped abot 200 feet down into the highway lol my friend just drove over the end of the cliff and we went across the rocks and back into the highway and left.I think it stunned the cops so bad they never even chased us lol.it looked like we just went over the cliff and I think they was waiting to hear the crash when we hit bottom .but we usta go up and over that thing all the time if we had someone who had never done it they would start screaming when alfred drove over the end of the cliff,it did look like you was just going out into the air and it was juat wide enough for that old jeep to fit up there it had to be 1000feet up above the Interstate highway and we usta sit there and get sotned and drink beer and watch the cars go by they looked like little hot wheels from up there.now the AT goes right along our old path across there I see hikers sitting up there taking pictures all the time now and when I tell them about taking a CJ-5 across there they just star at me like i am either crazy or a liar.lol needless to say if I offer to take them over it in my 4x4 colorado they don't want me to give them a ride to town lol

I wanted a fast car ( Dad's first car was a '57 vette and traded it in ona family car when he got married, a '66 chevelle and still has it.) Parents said no. A jeep... No. I got, and still have, a '69 chevy 3/4 ton four wheel drive, 4" lift 36" tires and a 307 small block and 4 speed. I out wheeled 3 jeeps on a 4x4 run.I got sent back the " easy way" when my front driveshaft broke. They were rookies. I'm not a master by ant means.
