Some of my interpritations on this song (and I've got a lot of them lol): Casey confirmed that this song was written for Neo and the Cat, so I see it as a conversation between them once Neo is possessed. I also think Flynt did a great job assigning the lyrics to the correct characters. What I really like about the lyrics is how all the Curious Cat lines are riddle-like. They can mean so many things but also make no sense and it really allows the chorus to shine as, like Neo, I'm also begging for some clarity on what they're talking about lol. I do think there's a lot of self-projecting on the cat's part. "So close to closure. The one thing you need. Underneath a monument with a dedicated plea." - This feels, to me, like the cat taunting Neo. Her grief and rage is such a heavy burden on her as she begs to get her revenge. "See through the smoke now. Illusions are weak." - I think this is the cat doing their classic technique of making someone feel as if they aren't enough to carry their burdens. The smoke line is a reference to the smoke that will be what separates them and also a metaphor for Neo just looking past what clouds her judgement to see that she isn't enough. "Intercept the messages that you left just for me." - Something we didn't see in Volume 9 that was originally planned was that Neo was feeding information to the Cat, so that line seems like a clear reference to their deal. The song then goes from The Cat talking to Neo to the Cat talking to the Gods. "Scratched through the surface and you found a key. Unlocking what you thought was safe inside a box, but it's somehow been set free. Finally..." - The Cat thought found their key to escaping in Neo. I like to think that the Cat referring to the Ever After as a box is a reference to Schrodinger's Cat. Now with their key, however, the cat has escaped the poison of curiosity the Ever After has trapped them with. "Say something real. Do you only speak in riddles, chatterbox? I'm waiting for your ugly mouth to spit it out." - Neo is basically just telling the cat to stfu because they're constantly talking in nonstop riddles. "Give me anything but this symphony of technicolor rage. You call it righteous; meaning. It's anything but love." - The cat was supposed to be this loving creature who helped those in need by making them feel better and talking them back to the tree when they needed it. This version of the cat, however, is nothing but spiteful towards the brothers and Neo is just begging to feel anything besides this overwhelming rage. "Don't take me for a fool. I know this all too well, so leave your tears to someone else cause it's not just you who's lost it all." - The cat is now telling Neo to shut up as they're not falling for Neo's plea since they're feeling a pain that is surprisingly similar to Neo's. "Say something real! Do you only speak in riddles, chatterbox? I'm waiting for your ugly mouth to say something real! Do you only speak in riddles, chatterbox?! I'm waiting on your ugly mouth to spit it out!" - Neo is now fighting harder as the experience becomes worse and worse as time goes on. Casey's singing really gives me the vibe of just how tortuous it would be to have the cat possess you. Apologizes for just how long this comment was. This song is by far my favorite and I really enjoyed your reactions to it!
20:14 I interpreted this line as Neo's experience under Cat possession, and the song in general is the mental agruement those two are having while the Cat is forcibly control her body. 1) The Cat's colour scheme is way closer to technicolour than Neo. 2) The Cat was in full-on villian mode when they possessed Neo. She was probably bombarded with all their spiteful thoughts and maybe even feeling all their rage. 3) It's pretty obvious that Neo hated being possessed as she killed the Cat when RWBY didn't finish them off. I bet she was mentally screaming (and maybe even pleading?) at the Cat to leave the entire time.
Again, I feel like you’re right and Ruby might be part of the equation of this song, because the emotion I’m feeling getting invoked is the feeling of running out of kindness and patience like she feels a couple times this volume, and some of these lyrics could be a Neo and Ruby back and forth
This song is so incredible - the bridge especially - give me anything but this symphony of technicolor rage 🥺🤩 you call it righteous, meaningful, it’s anything but love - don’t take me for a fool I know this all too well - so leave your tears for someone else it’s not just you who lost it all 😢 ❤💗💔
I think you’re right this may have been made when the story was slightly different, but was too good a song to not use. “Scratched through the surface and you’ve found a key”, well, Neo has scratched through the surface of her reality to what was really underneath all along, this place of fairy tales that’s the source of everything unlocks her power, but they’re still illusions. Not part of this song, but I think when she hatches from her Tree cocoon, she’ll have gone for an Alyx-style physical morph in some way, and GAIN THE VERY POWER OF THE GODS, THE POWER OF CREATION ITSELF!! and maybe make permanent/independent things
Most of the songs feel in the style of Awake to me which makes sense since that was from Casey's band and she has more input on the writing of volume 9 (I think). Like the new rock RWBY volume 9 songs to me sound like stuff that could easily be on an Ok goodnight album. It's definitely notably different from Jeff Williams song writing style musically. I like both 😁😁
