  • This is a comparison vid to show the differences between a mini DI cab sim and the joyo amp sim. This vid will show how they affect your sound separately as well as together. We will also use the joyo as a faux amp. Running it clean and dirty. As well as using pedal drive from the Marshall Law from Like My Pedals! Does the Joyo running direct benefit from an additional cab sim? Hopefully this will help answer that!

    Excellent demo and there are quite a few Joyo American demos on UA-cam but none I have seen show the Joyo totally clean (drive all the way down) like you did. That alone is super useful in getting a true understanding the pedal.
    Plenty of others show the light and medium breakup it is capable of so that you didn't focus on that is ok and it wasn't what you were trying to show anyway. I'm late to the party on the Joyo but this was very useful, thanks. I'm going to give it a try along with the ADA GCS5, maybe it will help but maybe it won't even need it so I guess I'll see...

    Great video! The American Sound into the cab sim has a sparkle (especially with the overdrive) that the dark cab sim alone does not. This may be the solution to the muddy sound I get running my pedals straight into my Mooer Audiofile's cab sim.

    Great experiment! I already have the American Sound and some overdrives and wanted to buy the xvive DI because of the cab sim. I find that the American Sound is great clean but a bit cold when you turn the drive knob up, and that coldness is gone with the cab sim of the Xvive.

    Thanks! The 20 seconds or so starting at 4:55 really show the benefit of the cab sim. It's not the clean sounds that need it, it's the rough, raw, unnatural edges that need to be taken off of the overdriven sounds.

    Mooer Audiofile headphone amp problem solved! Running my pedal chain into the Audiofile left me with either a fizzy, crappy overdrive sound with cab sim off, or a blanket-over-the-amp muddiness with amp sim on. Running the Joyo AS at the end of the chain into the Audiofile is a vast improvement. Since the AS is an amp sim (thus speaker sim as well), turning the Audiofile's amp sim off gives a more open-sounding true representation of how your pedals into an amp sound. I sometimes run the Audiofile with speaker sim on to give a thicker, meatier sound with overdrive and distortion, but with a tad more speaker-like resonance and thump. Instead of spending hundreds more for a "better" amp sim pedal with headphone out, thanks to your video, adding the $30.00 Joyo to my $79.00 Audiophile gives me a decent-sounding way to utilize my pedal chain with (quality) headphones. Great, helpful video.

      @aaronjlivecchi  5 років тому

      That’s why I make these! Thank you! Glad I could help! I do a similar thing with the headphone output of the digitech Trio pedal. You can utilize its output to do an unplugged or ampless practice. But it doesn’t sound that great but the drive pedals. Stick the Joyo on into it and it’s a night and day difference.

      Aaron J Livecchi I have a digitech RP355. It’s fizzy distortion no matter what you do, with headphones or monitors in particular. Got a Joyo AS yesterday, use RP355 only for cab sim to smooth out the already much improved JoYo output, and to add effects. My system now sounded better then what you get from thousands dollar setup that you cannot crank up at home anyway.

    Interesting comparison, but it seems likely you could get the Joyo to do a lot of what the cab sim is doing, just by adjusting the voice and EQ knobs.

    • @aaronjlivecchi
      @aaronjlivecchi  6 років тому +1

      TooSlowTube it’s def more versatile. The joyo could prob get fairly close in tone. The cab sim only has the advantage of being smaller and an xlr out. Besides that the joyo is def the better choice. The best choice imo is both though if possible.

    • @TooSlowTube
      @TooSlowTube 6 років тому +1

      Yes, they probably should have put an XLR on the Joyo amp simulators. The Moen ones, and the Behringer BDI, GDI and Acoustic DI all have them.
      It would be interesting to see how they shape a white noise sample, on a spectrum analyser. I'm not suggesting you should, but I've done that with a few things.
      If you start with a good white noise sample that's giving a flat frequency response, in something like Audio Spectrum Analyser (for Windows) or Visual Analyser (for Android), you can then put it through a pedal and see what the EQ actually does. It's often surprising.
      I guess a cab simulator is normally just a resonant filter, maybe with more than one hump.

    • @aaronjlivecchi
      @aaronjlivecchi  6 років тому +1

      TooSlowTube for sure about the analyzer. I wish I had the capabilities for it. I think I’ve seen a few mods for the joyo to have an xlr around the Internet.

    • @TooSlowTube
      @TooSlowTube 6 років тому +2

      You don't need much. I've used my PC to play a white noise sample I found on soundcloud, and a Behringer UCA202 cheapo USB sound card plugged into an android tablet, running Spectrum Analyze, which is very cheap... getting Android to accept the sound card was hit and miss though.
      Then I switched to using the android tablet to play the sound sample, and plugged the USB sound card into the PC, running Visual Analyser, which is free.... I keep getting the two confused, because the names are so similar. There are others.
      I could probably just use the PC to play the sample too, which might be simpler.
      Using a mic input on a PC sound card, or an ipad, doesn't work because there's built in EQ, but anything you're happy with as a recording interface is probably up to the job.
      I've seen lots of synth demos where people used an Ableton plugin or similar as a spectrum analyser too, but I don't have that.
      I use the white noise sample from here, played in a loop:
      soundcloud.com/onlinetonegenerator
      You know when it's all set up right when you see that as a flat graph on the spectrum analyser software, from below 20Hz up to 20kHz or more.
      When you put a pedal in between, you see the shape change, as you turn the knobs, and there's a fairly good chance there's then no way to get it flat. A cab sim isn't supposed to be flat, of course.
      You'd also see interesting things like harmonics being added, from clipping, as you turn up the gain.

      @aaronjlivecchi  6 років тому

    really great demo - thanks for posting! It really shows how important it is use a power amp sim to tame any drive pedals, especially if you record without amps, as I usually do. I haven't decided on whether to get the American or the California, but I'm leaning towards the American, as it sounds more versatile. You might want to experiment with an IR pedal like the Mooer Rader (for cab/mic sim setups). You can load your own IRs into it, or the thousands that are available on the Net. So many options for guitar players these days, the tech has come a long way!

      If you’re using a SS amp, why would you use either of these anyway?
