You murderer! LOL! I have a problem cutting my succulents. Every time I saw you break a leaf off, I cringed. It's definitely not my favorite part of keeping succulents, but necessary. Thanks for the video.
haha I was watching him ripping off leaves, thought he was done and then he did it a few more times. I had to laugh and then looked to see what people said in the comments. yours made me laugh out loud! hahaha
+Gretchen Ethridge well... I mean, this is the video on how to fix a leggy succulent. If you want to watch a video on making babies from a succulent go watch a video on "how to propagate every leaf on a succulent" videos.
Do you recycle soil or pots? Maybe you should make a salvage area for people who feel the need to save the plants. That would be nice for customers and nicer for less landfill....you do waste a whole lot.
My mom came for a visit and brought me all the succulents I left at home when I moved out and my oh my do they ever look different and so ugly! Thank you for this video. I am no gardener and had no idea I could just snap off the leaves and cut the steam. Very helpful :)
Great info! I have also had better luck keeping them out of the sun as they root - both with the leaf cuttings and the beheaded tops. I wish people wouldn't thumbs down because they feel sad for leaves. You obviously have quite a production on your hands and I would much rather you take your time to share videos with us than propagate leaf cuttings! Big thumbs up and subscribed. Thank you!
some of my succulents look like the ones u trashing, but why ! they grow beautiful on top then leggy dropped . just afraid I will ruin them by pulling stems . hoping they will grow heathy . my poor succulents.:(
Thank you for sharing! I got into succulents almost a year ago now and it was a real struggle in the beginning but I've got the hang of it now after lots of learning cuz they are so different from other plants. I've been growing my own veggies and herbs for about 6 years now as well as other house plants. Im my experience, trimming any plant is necessary throughout their stages of growth, I find it really helps to keep them healthy and pushing out new growth😊
I was terrified of cutting mine... I received a single small succulent at my brothers wedding and thru general lack of care it persisted to be really tall and top heavy. Watching this, I could pluck quick a few more leaves.. but each one made me cringe. Watching you get these ready to be pretty and healthy again has reassured me though! Thanks!
I went to 3 greenhouses today and they want 6.00 dollars for a 2 inch pot of Succulents, the smallest pot you can get, last year they were 3.49 a pot, this is in Alberta Canada, then I see you throwing away the pots and perfectly good Propagating succulent leaves, and it kills me 😢😢😢
Thanks for this is extremely helpful video! Seriously, thank you. Should the soil be moist or dry when you transplant the rosette cuttings to it? Does the answer change if the rosette cuttings are calloused or not?
You want it to be dry so it doesn’t rot, though if it’s calloused you can keep the soil moist because it’s less likely to rot. However, I’ve had more success with keeping it moist once it’s calloused but you don’t need to until it has started it’s root system. 👍
You ripped off too many leaves, they looked fine with the ones you didn’t like- also it’s so sad to see the leaves wasted :/ it’s a good educational video and all but I felt like it was too much leaves coming off.
This was great, thank you so much! I've been nervous about dealing with my leggy fella and this did a lot to relieve my anxiety about screwing up by being cutting off too much.
thanks for posting another video on this, I think it's time I take the plunge and cut my pot back. Question though, lets say i have an overgrown succulent pot (multiple succulents). What do I do with the pot of stumps? Will they eventually grow back? garbage?
+Bznak you can leave the stumps! They will bud out again! Or you can remove them, file the container with soil and your fresh cuttings again, and they'll grow out. Either way :-) you'll have a nice planter again.
Thanks for the video. I’m living in Okinawa presently and succulents are all around me. I’ve had a few starts with them but it appears I was giving them too much water. I’ll give it another go! Thanks again.
Awesome video! Just helped me learn soooo much about how to salvage some of my stretched plants and to identify what I have been doing wrong, a couple questions- - How long does it take the cuttings to callous and should they be in the sun during that process or out of the sunlight? - What kind ofroot boost hormone do you use? - I live in Oregon where is very cold outside, all my plants are inside in our living room that has big bay windows and eighth huge skylights, so it is the room with the best sun, we also have a woodstove in that room so it can get pretty warm like 80° to 90° and of course that makes it quite a dry heat in here, how often do you think I should be watering my plants in this sort of environment? Thank you so very much for the information and for your help and for the video can't tell you how grateful I am thank you
Thanks! This actually answered my question on what to do with my Echevarria succulent, I can cut the trunk a little bit because it lost its dry leaves. Can I use the same soil it came with or should I put a new one?
I do hope someone will go through that rubbish in order to recycle at some point... We wouldn't dream of putting all that together in one bin over here.
When you cut off the rosette and leave the small stem and plant it, how long does it take before it will grow roots? I have a couple succulents that have gotten very long stems, which was why I was searching to see if there was something to be done because it gets pretty top heavy.
Braeheid Gardens Quick question, aren't you supposed to let the succulent cuttings Callous (spelling?) over and dry out before you stick them into the soil? Every blog I go to says that so now I'm confused. But hey, it works for you right? I have also learned that you can do the same thing by using water after the cutting dries off. Is that true? Propagating by division? I think that's is what it's called! I've learned a lot from your videos!! Thanks. Looking forward to your answer.
+Marilyn Higgins it will! The plant will reproduce the "sun block" but in the meantime, if you leave it in direct sunlight without the "sunblock" you risk it burning!
Hahahahaha...I love you...You shit get it! Lower leaves? We don't need any stinking lower leaves!!! See, I'm a little OCD, so I like EVERYTHING super clean & tidy. Now, having said that I'm also HYPER empathetic which means I'd feel awful discarding the leaves that could be propagated, but dang if I didn't enjoy the hell outta YOU doing it!! Loved it!
A couple of questions: Is the soil that you’ve put the plugs in wet? Do you need to keep it wet or should it be dry? How do we know when they have rooted sufficiently to transplant? Thanks!
This was very helpful. Can u provide info on watering requirements for propagated stem cuttings? Once stem cutting is placed in soil, how much and how often is watering needed? Thank you!
Awesome Video! Thank you for the detailed information! I do have a question- If you are going to allow the succulent to callous over, do you apply the rooting hormone before or after the plant has the callous? Yes total beginner question... lol Thank you for your time!
I wish I could do this as easily as you do! I’m so cautious and meticulous, not only yo save the leaves worth propagating but I also ave the old cleaned up stem to get the new babies, definitely takes up space and time to grow! But you have some beautiful plants!
Oh, my! This video was hard to watch but very informative! The comments are a little harsh. Sometimes, you gotta do what you gotta do! That was the intended purpose of the video even if it hurts! Thanks!!
+WestCoastBestCoast yes, the stem would produce babies for sure. It comes to space/time management. If you have the space and time to nurture a stem and baby offshoots, then keep it. If you don't have the 3-6 months to have them marketable size, then push them aside and work with the cuttings.
Can you do this to all succulents? I have one that looks very similar to the last one that was cut (long and green) and it keeps falling over in my pot. I would appreciate the help from anyone.
New subscriber and I love this video even though I cringed a bit at how much you cut off, but it makes perfect sense! I need to get a tray like the one in your video👍🏽
Yeah I hear you all. What gets to me is how much he’s touching the leaves and rubbing the powder off....that stuff doesn’t come back and it’s a natural sunscreen to help shield against sun damage. I mean, once you’re around plants a lot you end up defining what’s precious and not so precious to you.
In my experience freshly cut plants should not be watered until first signs of roots popping out which one way I can tell is by tugging on the plant just a little and seeing if it's firm in the soil, usually happens after a week or 2 even. After I cut any succulent especially an open stem, I let it callous over which just means scab over, the thicker the stem, the longer it takes to scab. Can take up to 7 days sometimes. Then I put it into dry soil and only water when I see Roots. You want to make sure you water that succulent before you're cutting that stem so it can have enough water inside of it to survive until it starts showing roots and taking up water. My Method I always use for succulents is no roots no water. Just has worked for me. Now you can stick that fresh coats down right and dry soil but don't water for at least a week. Hope that helps happy growing
I was wondering this too. If you've hardened the stubs then added rooting hormone then that is clear but what about the ones you stuck directly in the soil. The planter looked like it might have been moist but not the tray . . .
Yeah, you probably enjoyed plucking the wings off dragonflies too...! Great tips on how to save plants that would otherwise have been thrown out for lack of sale. Plant owners can preserve their succulents into perpetuity this way. A little work but worth it.
im convinced im not rough enough, and baby mine too much. Case in point, i bring my brown edged plants to my brothers apt . He doesnt 3ven water the things, but after 3-4 months....they look healthier than my plants at my apt. that i baby! ugh
This is genius and so very helpful! I am new to owning succulents and I had no idea this was possible! Thank you so much for the info! I’m excited to try my hand at this! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
It actually hurt. It hurts even when I take off dried leaves from my succulents xD. I'm just starting at this and I would kill for a bunch of leaves like those you so heartlessly threw away T_T
Yes they would have! But this isn't a video about how to propagate the stems of a succulent. This is about how to take your 1 succulent, and make it nice and small again. I have other videos about how to propagate succulents. This one is not that one. This is about how to fix a leggy succulent.
You murderer! LOL! I have a problem cutting my succulents. Every time I saw you break a leaf off, I cringed. It's definitely not my favorite part of keeping succulents, but necessary. Thanks for the video.
+washanda washington hah!
haha I was watching him ripping off leaves, thought he was done and then he did it a few more times. I had to laugh and then looked to see what people said in the comments. yours made me laugh out loud! hahaha
@washanda Washington love your comment I felt the same way. Your comment made laugh out loud I almost choked on my tea lol.
I definitely cringed through this. I'm like 'why the hell you so rough though?' geez.
washanda washington me too!! Omg!! I can't believe he just ripped them off so improperly!! Unbelievable!! I feel your pain!! Lol
Omg, you should change the name of this video to stressful to watch succulent trimming! Lol
CmdrBittles dead
CmdrBittles dieing laughing. This is a horror movie😂😅
I know!! Super cringe!!
I thought I was the only one thinking “what in the hell is this guy doing!?” lol
CmdrBittles 🤭🤭🤭😪😪 so careless
why waste all those pots? can't you just replant in them with the newly grown succulents?
Shana M he wastes a lot 😒
Hi! I wish I had everything in your trash bucket... I am just starting out, so I cherish every leaf and try to get them to grow
😜
me to but it's so much fun
Bevy King
lol ikr!
Bevy King me too!! Lol what a tragic waste of about 50 to 60 perfectly good potential plants!!
Same girl same!! I was wincing the whole time!! I hoard them until I know for sure they aren't going to grow.
This is painful to watch, 😥
+Gretchen Ethridge well... I mean, this is the video on how to fix a leggy succulent. If you want to watch a video on making babies from a succulent go watch a video on "how to propagate every leaf on a succulent" videos.
EXACTLY
I could start a greenhouse from what you toss away.
I'm a newbie and even i was shocked and kinda laughing lol
You totally wasted way too much of the plant. It was not necessary, I don't understand why you would not just give them away instead of trash :(
Mari Corona exactly
Mari Corona I completely agree!! What a tragic waste!! I'm not even subscribing. His voice as well as his technique is way too abrasive for me!!
Yeah it’s kind of annoying. He pulled waaaaay too many leaves off, and the way he handles the plants is really intense. Makes me sad lol. Poor plants.
I agree! Maybe HE just couldn't be bothered to save all the scraps but so many people would have loved to!!
Some plant lovers may cringe, but they are just leaves after all, and the plant will make countless of them in its lifetime.
How ruthless he's being with these makes me feel less scared to handle my own succulents, although I will definitely use a more nurturing touch.
Me: *looks for his adress on internet*
Also me: *Takes his trash home*
Can I have your trash bucket please ?
😆
Right?!? 😭
Do you recycle soil or pots? Maybe you should make a salvage area for people who feel the need to save the plants. That would be nice for customers and nicer for less landfill....you do waste a whole lot.
Wow nice video.is it necessary to use root harmone on baby sacculant.
It was killing me watching him waste all that 😣
My mom came for a visit and brought me all the succulents I left at home when I moved out and my oh my do they ever look different and so ugly! Thank you for this video. I am no gardener and had no idea I could just snap off the leaves and cut the steam. Very helpful :)
Please leave the stem they will grow baby succulents too!
Is it so?
my heart breaks just like the leafs...
i am laughing seeing only 3 leaves remain
Hahahahh lol
It’s like seeing what remains after season 10 of greys Anatomy
Great info! I have also had better luck keeping them out of the sun as they root - both with the leaf cuttings and the beheaded tops. OMG I can't watch....its giving me anxiety lol. Soooio rough and waistful
I like the idea of rooting them all together in the mixed container. I'm going to give that a try with the cuttings (rosettes) I've got. Thanks!
Good luck!
Nooo so many wasted leaves!!
I would loooove those discarded leaves! 😧
Me too! I'll pay for it
Me too
Thanks for the tips! Now, please mail me the trash asap!😂
Why r u wasting those precious leaves
I went to 3 greenhouses today and they want 6.00 dollars for a 2 inch pot of Succulents, the smallest pot you can get, last year they were 3.49 a pot, this is in Alberta Canada, then I see you throwing away the pots and perfectly good Propagating succulent leaves, and it kills me 😢😢😢
I purchased 4 ..@trader joe for 7.99

Braeheid Gardens I will gladly buy your trash bucket from you. Just let me know how much.
Hah! We actually sometimes save ziplock baggies full of leaves and give them away on our facebook page :)
Just earned a Facebook follower! 😄
Braeheid Gardens hi do you let your succulent stem callus over before using the hormone root stem or right after cutting?? Very new to this. Thanks
I could take those leaves happily lol I love to propagate and watching new babies growing 🌵💚
Wow! U don’t mess around! But I guess when you have a business to run, ya gotta move swiftly!
Thanks for the video. I’m living in Okinawa presently and succulents are all around me. I’ve had a few starts with them but it appears I was giving them too much water. I’ll give it another go! Thanks again.
You were WAY to rough with the succulents
Like it was hard to watch you trim them 😬
how long we don't water a succulent cutting
thats my question as well !Why so many selfie replys with no proper questions?
Awesome video! Just helped me learn soooo much about how to salvage some of my stretched plants and to identify what I have been doing wrong, a couple questions-

Do you use a succulent soil or regular potting mix? The soil looked moist so did you put some water in it before inserting the plants?
Braeheid Gardens Quick question, aren't you supposed to let the succulent cuttings Callous (spelling?) over and dry out before you stick them into the soil? it's not necessary to let it callous first. But it helps prevent the stem or leaf from rotting in the soil.
When you touch the rosette leaves and wipe off the powdery coating, will it come back?
+Marilyn Higgins it will! The plant will reproduce the "sun block" but in the meantime, if you leave it in direct sunlight without the "sunblock" you risk it burning!
Marilyn Higgin
Like the others, I also want your trash bin! The rosettes are beautiful! The purple and blueish ones! I need more space for more!
Hahahahaha...I love you...You shit get it! Lower leaves? We don't need any stinking lower leaves!!! See, I'm a little OCD, so I like EVERYTHING super clean & tidy. How long will it take you before watering those plants? Or do you mist them once in a while? Thanks!
The cut succulents we water regularly, and dont let them dry out.
This was very helpful. Can u provide info on watering requirements for propagated stem cuttings? Once stem cutting is placed in soil, how much and how often is watering needed? Thank you!

Oh, my! This video was hard to watch but very informative! The comments are a little harsh. Sometimes, you gotta do what you gotta do! That was the intended purpose of the video even if it hurts! Thanks!!
hi there. quick question. i cut the tops of my succulents and stuck the tops in soil. do i water the soil? or leave it dry for a couple days?
Do I need to water the soil before putting my cutting in or no
What type of plant is the 2nd one in the video with the slightly folded leaves?
Wouldn't the root ball have produced again? You threw them away and I was wondering. Thanks!
+WestCoastBestCoast yes, the stem would produce babies for sure. It comes to space/time management. If you have the space and time to nurture a stem and baby offshoots, then keep it. If you don't have the 3-6 months to have them marketable size, then push them aside and work with the cuttings.
Braeheid Gardens Thanks!!!
Is the soil that the "new" plants are placed in dry soil? Do they require any watering at all?
Can you do this to all succulents? I have one that looks very similar to the last one that was cut (long and green) and it keeps falling over in my pot. I would appreciate the help from anyone.
Wesley Dale Yes, you can do that to all succulents. They don’t mind if you cut them.
Wesley Dale Also, you can cut them in many pieces, I mean the stem, not just the head, and they all will root in about 2-3 weeks.
New subscriber and I love this video even though I cringed a bit at how much you cut off, but it makes perfect sense! I need to get a tray like the one in your video👍🏽
New subscriber! Thanks! Crazy that anyone would feel the urge to subscribe! Hah! Thanks!
Do you water it? Or you have to wait for the roots to show before you water it?
What kind of succulent is the second one? I've never seen it before.
How soon do you water them? Is the soil moist when you pop the stem in? Thank you,
Fix, he writes? I just saw choppped succulent heads!! My eyes!!!
Does it matter what time of the year you do this?
How long it takes to develop rooting system? Just give me an estimated period.
what is the soil mix you use? Thanks!
How do you know that they have good roots and are ready to move?
Would you ever let someone take the leaves you throw out??
Yeah I hear you all. What gets to me is how much he’s touching the leaves and rubbing the powder off....that stuff doesn’t come back and it’s a natural sunscreen to help shield against sun damage. I mean, once you’re around plants a lot you end up defining what’s precious and not so precious to you.
how often do you water the ones you are trying to root?
So do you need to let the callus over and use root stimulator or not
how do you water once transplantEd?
you can use a mister, to be sure not to over water, or carefully use a watering can.
How long do you wait before you water the stump ones?
I was wondering this too. If you've hardened the stubs then added rooting hormone then that is clear but what about the ones you stuck directly in the soil. The planter looked like it might have been moist but not the tray . . .
Wow!! Could you do a video on how to care for paddle plant succulent. Thank you, great information on your video.
Can you or will you consider donating you leaves vs throwing them away??? I would love to pay for shipping.
Do you compost all the leaves you cut off?
You would rather keep the old plant but cut-off the top and wait for new branches and offsets. You would get more cuttings this way.
Yeah, you probably enjoyed plucking the wings off dragonflies too...! Great tips on how to save plants that would otherwise have been thrown out for lack of sale. Plant owners can preserve their succulents into perpetuity this way. A little work but worth it.
Ok tell me how long it takes to grow? I can't follow it language but vedio is superb
Can I buy succulent from your garden? I am in Calgary and wonder the cost and the shipping.
The way you break leaves, broke my heart 😪. But very informative video
What’s the name of the 3rd succulent you’re propagating ?
what kind of soil are you using?
this was one of the best sites and answered many questions
I’ve been sooo scared to cut mine but you have no remorse omg lol
Guys chill there seeds he’s not killing the plant
This gave me anxiety.
I like how he said he's got a baby
HES GOT A BABY
im convinced im not rough enough, and baby mine too much.
Lmao here I am crying over my failed propagations...
I don t discard those roots and stems, in a couple of months they have grown 2 or 3 new rosettes!
Yes they would have! But this isn't a video about how to propagate the stems of a succulent. This is about how to take your 1 succulent, and make it nice and small again. I have other videos about how to propagate succulents. This one is not that one. This is about how to fix a leggy succulent.
Sorry..
What do you do with that “trash “?
Can one reuse the soil ?
Best instructional video yet thank you very much
When to water these?
Do people not recycle/compost in Alberta?
Why didn't you have to callous over the cuttings?
Thx for the video!! I'm new to succulents and this was really helpful
Me: having panic attacked while watching those babies gone to trash!😂😂🤣😘
