"Ballet is not a rivalry at the barre or who will do more pirouettes, but art, where the artist is yourself." This was stated in an interview by Sergei Polunin. According to him, unlike sports, where there is no right to make mistakes, artists must first of all live their characters, then mistakes and excitement will become secondary. The youngest premier dancer in the history of Covent Garden spoke about the uniqueness of his new production of The Master and Margarita, which will premiere on March 22 in Moscow. He also recalled the last meeting with the composer Eduard Artemiev, said that he did not understand how directors take five or six years to make films, and explained why he considers figure skater and wife Elena Ilinykh to be a talented dramatic actress.

Yes, bureaucracy can be such a discouraging thing. 😔Sergei has made it clear in many interviews, including this one, that he appreciates his audience and it is not the audience or lack of audience support that keeps him from finding his place - on the contrary, they are the ones who are actually supporting him by buying tickets and coming to his shows. ❤
But he's had difficulty finding the structural support he needs for funding and for venues, having people in charge of cultural development in cities "yawn in his face" over his ideas for bringing shows to the area. And it seems that this has been a problem for other artists in Russia - that they don't get the professional support they need to be able to develop and thrive as artists or to make a living. I do hope this situation changes and that he finds the structural support he needs in Russia. I appreciate so much his fans in Russia and all the support they give him by going to his shows, and for sharing their video clips from his performances with those of us who can't be there. ❤
Да, бюрократия может быть такой обескураживающей вещью. 😔Сергей во многих интервью, в том числе и в этом, давал понять, что он ценит свою аудиторию и не аудитория или отсутствие поддержки публики мешает ему найти свое место - наоборот, именно они на самом деле поддерживают его, покупая билеты и приходя на его концерты. ❤ Но ему трудно найти структурную поддержку, в которой он нуждается для финансирования и мест проведения, поскольку люди, отвечающие за культурное развитие в городах, «зевают ему в лицо» из-за его идей по проведению шоу в этом районе. И в других интервью он упомянул, что это было проблемой для других художников в России - они не получают профессиональной поддержки, необходимой им для развития и процветания как артистов или для того, чтобы зарабатывать на жизнь.
Я очень надеюсь, что эта ситуация изменится и что он найдет необходимую ему структурную поддержку в России. Я очень ценю его поклонников в России и всю поддержку, которую они оказывают ему, посещая его спектакли, и за то, что они делятся своими видеоклипами с его выступлений с теми из нас, кто не может быть там. ❤

Серёжа, ты самый лучший танцор , в балете, лучший и честный человек среди своих коллег. Смотрела все твои танцы. Самоотдача неимоверная. Ты просто удивительный человек. Таких больше нет. Счастья тебе и твоим деткам и жене. Прости нас, за своё выступление в Ташкенте. На самом деле это были единицы, а мы тебя любим, понимаем и были возмущены таким поведением властей. Но народ с тобой А это главное. Твой танец на 9 мая, день победы - это шедевр. Здоровья тебе и чтобы не болели ноги и спина.
Сергей бесподобный! Его слова о том, что балет это искусство, где артист главное должен "жить своим персонажем", а не механически точно исполнять движения, эта свобода изображения и есть прелесть, необычность и притягательность его постановок!

Вы правы, Сергей очень развивается, как говорит прекрасно , очень внятно, прежде он лучше говорил на английском. И вот прекрасный русский язык.
Он открытый ни для чего-то и по выражению лица это было видно, когда задан был вопрос.
Он такой и не может по другому.
Побольше бы таких людей, мир бы стал светлей и чище.
А чаще бывает- думают одно, говорят другое, делают третье.

Интервью Сергея, которое особенно интересно послушать и оценить после просмотра МиМ(в Питере)! Насколько убедительно и четко Сергей продумал сложнейший спектакль, поставленный в короткий срок с минимально возможными финансовыми вложениями, при этом сохранив булгаковский калорит и аромат времени,- становится не по себе, как удалось ему создать этот шедевр,воплотив в нём всё что было задумано автором? Замысел спектакля великолепно передан в этой непренуждённой беседе, которая лишь подчёркивает глубину, благородство и зрелость личности Мастера- Сергея Полунина . ! П олагаю спектакль превзошел все ожидания!💯 Браво! 💥💥💥

What he says about ballet not grabbing his interest enough to go see it because there’s evolved forms of art like holograms and Avatar and Cirque de Solei (which I’ve seen all myself), I consider someone like me, who’s never seen a classical ballet performance and have bought tickets to see my very first one this October, that, well, It may be “outdated”, but to people like me seeing for the first time, it is new. I’m wondering if he realizes this? What if both can exist- classical and contemporary/experimental? Great interview- thanks for sharing!
I’m glad you enjoyed the interview! This discussion about a modern audience and ballet is a common topic in Sergei’s interviews, so he’s talked about his ideas quite a bit in ways that weren’t necessarily covered here.
But what you are saying is exactly one of the things he has talked about - the coexistence of classical ballet and more contemporary/ experimental forms of it.
He believes that the classics, such as Giselle, Don Quixote, Swan Lake, etc. are works of art and are worth preserving and should definitely be continued by traditional theatre companies.
But he has also suggested, which is more what he’s talking about in this interview, is that the way classical ballet is presented and choreographed needs to be modernized. An example of what this looks like to Sergei, would be Johan Kobborg’s “Romeo and Juliet” which was a classical ballet Sergei produced with his company Polunin Ink in 2019 (and performed again in 2021), which had a shorter running time than usual and the kind of focused, story-telling choreography Sergei refers to wanting to see in this interview. It is a purely classical ballet.
In addition to preserving the classics, he also, yes, wants to see new, contemporary stories be created with classical ballet steps, and to experiment and combine ballet with different types dancing and art forms. But he does not want to do away with classical ballets. He enjoys dancing classical ballets and has mentioned that the production cost is one of the barriers that keeps him from producing more of them himself. (Due to the sets, number of performers, costuming, etc. they are much more expensive to produce than a ballet with a small cast and less elaborate stage or number of set pieces.)
As far as theaters go, however, he does want to see dancers treated better and paid more fairly, and so he tries to create competition with his company by paying dancers well and giving them more creative opportunities. (His company is very small and he hires dancers on an event-by-event basis. He doesn’t have a theater troupe.)
All that said, I hope you enjoy your first experience of ballet! 🩰
@@IndiaInk all that to say, I appreciate that he can admit he’s not the best, he’s not fully accomplished in anything- but nonetheless, he always tries his best. I think I realized a lot of what he speaks of at my own age 10 yrs older than him - and always intrigued how fast some people mature and understand themselves and others so quickly. For myself, focusing on one religion for 20 years stunted this kind of growth. I believe he doesn’t focus on one religion, yes?
In the end, I take away how gracefully he composes himself as he listens and responds. I do not respond so well in real life. Some if these questions are quite challenging and surely stirred some emotion- yet he remained still. Some kinda media training or something- wow.
Yes, Sergei is almost always very composed and thoughtful in his interviews, despite the kinds of questions some people ask (and some of them can be incredibly inappropriate)! I think this is simply a skill he’s developed on his own over the years through his many interviews. He’s always been very polite and candid with the people interviewing him and as he’s matured and had time to think through his ideas and goals, he’s grown in his ability to communicate them. He’s passionate about his vision for bringing ballet to a wider audience and seems to enjoy sharing his thoughts and ideas.
I’ll have to disagree with you, though, on saying he’s not “fully accomplished in anything”. Of course we are all hopefully maturing and growing in our skills throughout our lifetime, but I don’t know what more one could have expected him to accomplish in his ballet theater career except “more years”.
He’s accomplished more in his career at his age, both in his theater career and his independent productions than most dancers do in a lifetime. (e.g The number and type of classical roles he’s performed, including performing the lead in Mayerling in his early 20s when this demanding role is normally reserved for dancers much later in their careers; the number of original ballet productions he’s created and produced, somewhere around 9 or 10 over the past 7 years… 3 of those were produced in one year alone! Rasputin, Romeo and Juliet, and Little Red and the Wolf, all created in 2019. etc al.)
And yes, he’s very humble and he doesn’t go around comparing himself to other artists, but not so many years ago he was considered among professionals in theaters as one of the best dancers in the world (and still is considered such by many ballet artists) and he is certainly considered to be among the best of his generation. That kind of recognition and accomplishment doesn’t disappear just because he moved on from dancing in theaters to focus on other areas of his life and to explore more creative aspects of dancing and ways to develop ballet.
I think I was referring to some things he said in the interview. Not his exact words, and I may have misunderstood when I was watching it. Sorry for the poor choice of words, because after re-reading them, it doesn’t make sense. Hmm…
Maybe I was referring to the part where he’s going to do what he can with the body he has and as he gets older, and if there’s someone who “jumps better”, then he just allows them to become better and doesn’t continue to try to be even better than the jumper. Or maybe I was referring to the fact that he doesn’t consider himself great at everything, like for example acting and how he says he was kinda just thrown in there alongside very accomplished/trained actors.
Wow all those accomplishments that you listed are so impressive. Now when I consider all of that, all the productions his company does, I think of the part in the interview where he thinks it’s ridiculous that a movie can take 5 years because people take long pleasurable breaks. Sergei’s like, screw that, I’m gettin this shit done in half a year 😂
He ain’t waisting any of his time. That part kinda made me laugh.
He’s kinda like a machine and it makes me wonder what breaks look like for him and is it difficult to rest and relax.
