  • In this short video Anastasia and I are off to Dukes Hotel in St James for a Afternoon Marteani Experience. A very Ian Fleming setting, but did Ian Fleming really go there? Are there any photos of Fleming on the wall? Did he leave an inscription in the Gents saying 'Fleming woz ere' ?
    We aim to find out.

From the Andrew Lycett bio on Ian Fleming " Vesper Lynds name came from an incident Ian had experienced with Ivar [Bryce] on Jamaica's north coast. They visited a large mansion, met by an old butler who ushered them into a dimly lit drawing room. The butler returned carrying a tray with three glasses. "Vespers are served," he announced. This turned out to be a mixture of iced rum, fruit and herbs which their host drank at 6 o'clock every evening. They invented their own gin-based cocktail, the one ordered by Bond and called it Vesper. When Ian wrote his novel, he appropriated the name for his heroine."

So the whole thing of Fleming getting the idea of the Vesper from Duke's is a myth? Alessandro Palazzi is always claiming that Ian Fleming frequently came to Duke's. Did you ever meet him? I think you just stirred up some controversy.

I'm not on to doubt Alessandro, but he was not there on the day and the barman I asked said there was no physical record of Fleming being there. You're right Alex, I'll have to do some quiet digging and cross examine every one of the staff, after many more cocktails of course.

YES! FLEMING USED TO GO TO DUKES ACCORDING TO SR. BEVERAGE MGR. MR. ALESANDRO PALAZZI (SEE YOU TUBE VIDZ) - REXX

AWESOME THANKS REXX!!!!!! I'd love for Alesandro to disclose his sources. According to the PR team there is no proof. If it's entirely hearsay, that could be said of any drinking establishment.

IMHO it's all B.S. and a cheap con to profit from the Fleming /Bond myth in some way or another! I say 'cheap' because it's overt and not more discreet especially coming from certain bar tenders in London which shall not be named. The look on your wife's face tells it all, it's all fun and games if not taken seriously! A great video produced by Kirby Allison which was filmed in Dukes bar illustrates the 'stretched ' myth more about Fleming and the so-called 'Vesper' cocktail which I believe is pure fabrication ! Check it out. The only vesper drink mentioned by Fleming originated from a visit Fleming made to an old ex-pat in Jamaica in the 1950s and was served a drink of unknown ingredients called 'vespers' , the rest is rumor fabrication as time goes by .

Interesting thanks for the feedback. I saw Kirby's video which I thought was neatly done.
