MGMT- Congratulations Review

This review is obviously much earlier than the April 13th release date of this album, but Congratulations is currently all over the net--and even streaming at NPR Music at the time of this video's upload. MGMT's Congratulations makes me want to say this to the band: Congratulations. It's a neo-psych rock drama, bursting with cinematic tracks. A real solid beginning-to-end listen. Some songs pale in comparison to others, but Congratulations still avoids falling prey to high highs and low lows. This music is a modern day take on the rock guys like Bowie, The Beatles, and Arthur Brown were playing with back in the day, and it even takes the time to pick up some new wave and post-punk influences, too. MGMT is clearly well-versed in the language of rock, and this album is a result of the fluency.

I think we should just say the reviewers were way too harsh on this album. Man this album rules. It's such a shame that it got such mediocre reviews. It's a 10/10 from me but glad you gave it at least an 8/10
Quade Carter a lot of people didn’t like it because it was a major shift from the sounds from Electric Feel Kids and Time to Pretend
I believe that Congratulations is the Pinkerton of the 2010s. It was a sophomore album that differed greatly from the poppy sound of the first album, was poorly received upon release, but slowly overtime the opinion of the album has gotten better. Hopefully in a few year Congratulations will be seen for the masterpiece it really is.
claudevandog But you know, without the questionable lyrics
I really cannot even begin to understand how/why it got such average reviews. Must have been very unfortunate timing or something. It's a really, really good psychedelic record.
@@wvvw4036 i can forgive the spotty lyrics since most of the time their voices blend in with the rest of the instruments and you can just ignore it
I know there's really long, out there, pretentious psych rock, but I wouldn't say this song or the album it comes from borders on that at all. MGMT really makes the concept of psych/experimental rock fun and understandable. They're no Soft Machine, bro. MGMT is good at writing singles, but I'd hate for them to make the same album over. again. They're probably going to go in a diff direction about this LP, too. Who knows? They seem like guys who like to stretch out and explore different sounds.

It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums.
Did you know that Whitney Houston's debut LP, called simply Whitney Houston had 4 number one singles on it? Did you know that, Christie?
I like this better than their old stuff. It shows that they don't give a rats ass to what the "fans" like, but what they like and where they want to drive their music to.
I agree, but they never gave a rats ass about the fans. They thought Columbia was joking when they were offered a record deal. That's what many of the tracks on Oracular Spectacular are about. The Handshake (my favorite MGMT song and my favorite song of all time) is about Their hesitation to agree to the terms of a record deal and their concerns about what they really wanted (as seen in the lines "I just shook the handshake, I just sealed the deal", and "you've convinced yourself that you want it but you don't know"). At the same time, it's also about acid... ("We've got the handshake under our tongue")
I don't get it--you like it because they don't give a fat flying fuck what you like; they aren't going to entertain you, they're just going to jerk off (musically) and you're going to pay them to do it? I felt cheated by these rambling, hookless songs. I watch the videos, and afterwards, I can't remember anything about the music; I can only remember the visuals. What's the point of listening to this thing?
@@royf.9034 the riffs and basslines are super bright and fun, the vocals and harmonies are pulled off nicely. The drums are steadily groovy. I think the true focus with this record is the instrumentation, rather than trying to give you a "catchy hook". Regardless, a song doesn't need a hook to be enjoyable. It's good to sit back and take in all the elements as they present themselves
@AV I forgot I wrote this comment until today! But yeah, those are the fans I was describing, the people who go to the concerts and only get hyped when Electric Feels and Kids play. Thanks for clarifying that for me!
what is time?
Tell me if you end up digging it more. :-D

Have just gone back to this album, on first listen it wasn't for me. But going back to it now in 2017, how did I miss the amazing tracks? Sibrerian Breaks is one of their finest moments. So much going on in one track.
William Mankelow , Wow man. I've had a very similar experience with it. Now I'm very much looking forward to the new one!
They were ahead of their time, and it will probably take another decade until fans have caught up to the third album.
so you wouldn't listen to them because they're popularz?
theneedledrop holy fuck
Is it just me or is Anthony looking like Ken Bone

this is my favorite album ever ... it gives me hope that good music still exists and siberian breaks... aahhhhhh, i fall in love everytime i listen to that masterpiece!
Honestly I think this might be my album of the decade. It's as beautiful as the day I first listened to it 10 years ago.
same, absolutely perfect album
At first when this came out I was a sophomore in HS and I only liked Its Working, I found a whistle, and Congratulations.. go figure.
4 years later I love the whole album, now that my mind has matured you truly appreciate the music. This is an album for music geeks.
Song For Dan Tracey, Flash delirium, and Brian eno are songs that grow on you.
Someones missing is a great song with good instrumentation but a bit to repetitive towards the end
Siberian Breaks is just pure beauty, art painted over the sound waves.
Holy shit same here. I grew to love this albulm
I was a freshman when congratulations dropped. Thankfully my older brother got me to listen to it over a few times and after that I pretty much developed a taste in music I still mostly stick by today. Congratulations is my favorite album of MGMT, Siberian breaks is a journey with every listen.
skylinez Almighty Agree 100% Dan and Brian we're songs that didn't grab me at all first time around but easily my favorite song listens on the album if I don't have the time for it all.
I was a sophomore too! I did some experimenting if you know what I mean and every time i'd light up i'd throw this on towards the tail end of highschool
You totally hit the mark with that comment Skylines!!!
revisited this great album today and decided to revisit this too. your tone has really changed over the past 7 years and you just seem to have so much more confidence in your delivery these days. crazy how long it's been.
Flash Delirium is the best track I've heard since "What Would I Want? Sky", loved it. You're doing a great job.
Ayeee Animal Collective love

based on what youve said about this album it makes me kind of proud that i had it on repeat every where i went throughout 8th and 9th grade.

Im glad you appreciated this LP. It indeed turned a lot of people off. But in return it gave us "listeners" and musicians a brand new respect for the band. True icons of the 2000s indie rock era.
Brian Eno is def my fav, and it's only 2nd to Congrats @ the end.
You're right, it's not surprisingly weird, but it's just weird enough for me to find a lot of respect for it. It's a much more mature LP than Oracular, and hope thy delve further in this direction.

I feel he would give this album a 6 or 7 if he reviewed it today.

and thank you for watching. :-D
You're welcome.
I see what you're saying. Stylistically, it doesn't really nail down one sound, but I think the variation makes this thing so much more fun. It's a fun album, and that's pretty much all I was expecting from it. Maybe that's why I ended up enjoying it so much? Dunno.
0:47 is the greatest way to describe this album. Possibly the ONLY way to describe this album.
Hey Oldtony Vidtanno here
Is the video quality an aesthetic choice or was this how his videos looked in 2010?
Nah. The melon's voice broke in 2011.
This album is literally a 10 I demand a re-review aha (if you gave anything less than an 8 I'd cry tho)
Digging Gonja more? And what Eno LPs are you digging?
@xXJAMI3Xx what are some of the things you're not digging about the album at the moment?
Congratulations will forever be my favorite album after The Wall by pink floyd and Mothership by Led zeppelin
dude guy You're not allowed to say a greatest hits album is a bands best album....
dude guy those are 3 amazing albums
MGMT were influenced by Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, though, you know that, right?
Totally. I mean, they did write some great pop hits that are going to go down in history as great songs. Why do they need to write more of 'em. Time To, Electric, and Kids are pretty badass. Who knows if they can write songs like that again. But who knows, they probably have more poppy tracks coming in the fut ure.
have you reviewed oracular spectacular??
This could be the best album of the 10s
I quite enjoy, too. I don’t believe it will be regarded as so, but that’s okay.

Great review brah! I like the fact that they took a different route for this album. The pop hits were great but I much prefer this psychedelic sound to their pop sound hits.
My first Needledrop video I ever watched. Congratulations is still one of my all-time favourite albums
Never mind I just gave the song another listen.
that song is an odyssey
Can you do a mgmt tier list?
@Tboy16 Well, thank you. :-)
How do you listen to the albums? Do you sit down and only listen or are you doing something else?
Id love you to revisit this review and know your opinion on it now. Not nearly as bizarre as it felt in 2010. Overlooked, underloved and deserves some recognition. They went somewhere that most people in their position at that point would've been too scared to go
Why does the cover remind me of bubsy 3d lmao
Infinitenik melon actually mentioned in the flash delirium track review that he thinks the congratulations cover looks like bubsy
CocoaHD True
Because of the cat character?
ah 2010 good times
I love this review. I like how excited he seems every time he remembers how good a song was.
Oh my god, I hear "who loves the sun"! When you first said that I really didn't understand the parallel. It's a really specific part in the middle of the big climax where MGMT's harmonies and melody transitions sound lie VU's title chorus to "sun". That's new :D
Thanks for a super good review. Precise and sharp. Spot on!
@FNGRBNGR That's so funny. I think Someone's Missing is my least favorite song on the LP. We're obviously coming @ this album from totally different musical palettes. Weirrrd. I can see what you're saying, though. It's not an intricate, detailed, delicately crafted album, but that's not what I'm really looking for from it. I think the fact that it's so fun, bright, and well-traveled is what attracts me. I can't help but get into the positive attitude this thing gives off.
ikr
0:47 this might be the greatest analogy I've ever heard you make up LOL !
glad you're digging it! :-D
Oracular Spectacular light 8
Congratulations 10
MGMT decent 7
I'd give their self-titled an 8 or 9. I don't understand how true fans can honestly say "Oracular" is a better album. There's literally nothing else that sounds like their third album, and musically it pushes their sound further than "Congratulations". "Congratulations" is no doubt their best album, but "MGMT" actually improves upon it in some areas, and should be examined further. Psychedelic music fans get it.
+psychedelicpiper conversely, I don't understand how people can honestly say their self-titled is better than Oracular. Congratulations being better than Oracular? Sure. But their third album? For me it's an overly compressed mess, the sonic equivalent of throwing 50 cans of paint at the wall all at once, and with not much in the way of actual songwriting. This is coming from a guy that likes groups like The Flaming Lips and Animal Collective btw. The album's just not for me, but to each their own.
@swing77 I tried playing "Oracular" to a couple friends. One of them said it sucks, the other one said it was okay, but a lot of the songs sound the same. I can understand that people who are really into indie music worship the album, but for my friends and I, it just doesn't really stand out from everything else. Though I will admit it's a far better record than "Little Dark Age", which is by far their least original and musically engaging record.
+swingy77 As for their third album, I now consider it equally as good as "Congratulations". I am baffled you don't think there's much in the way of songwriting, because the self-titled album has among their best songwriting to date. "Mystery Disease", for example, is about the human ego. "Astro-Mancy" is about being cast away from a perfect existence, living in a Matrix reality. "Introspection", "Your Life is a Lie", and "Plenty of Girls in the Sea". are pretty straighforward.
It has some of their most in-depth lyrics, and as for the instrumentation and production, there's a lot of interaction going on between sounds and instruments. They sound like the 60's band The Red Crayola on the song "I Love You, Too Death". The album sounds like a total psychedelic experience. And now that you mention Animal Collective, I do find it very similar to their "Centipede Hz" album, which was also very unfairly maligned.
I recommend hearing the vinyl mix, which is less compressed. 10 years from now, a lot more people will understand MGMT's third album, just like it took a while for a lot of people to understand "Congratulations".
+psychedelicpiper You seem to be misunderstanding what I mean by "songwriting". I'm not talking about the deeper lyrical meaning of things (which MGMT have always been great at), I'm talking about the bare bones of the songs themselves: the melodies and arrangements, what the instruments are actually playing. Other than Alien Days and maybe Your Life is A Lie, the album is mostly just a bunch of knob turning noise to me, with zero memorability. I mean Astro-Mancy for example is literally 5 minutes of nothing but layered warping sounds, with Andrew moaning quietly in the background like he has no interest in singing at all.
To me it just feels like they really didn't know what direction to take their music in, so they just threw a bunch of shit in a pot, stirred it up, and then dumped it out on the soundboard. For some people the idea of that sounds really cool, but for me it just ends up sounding meandering and, well, boring. And I like a lot of ambient and drone music, so it's not like I get bored by anything that isn't a catchy pop single; experimental music is cool too. It's just that whatever it is they were going for, experimental or non-experimental, they just did not execute it well at all in my opinion.
I love the feeling you get from this album, like that airy atmospheric floaty feeling, it's like the prog rock of Camel mixed in with the mathy nerd rock vibe of The Sparks, such a good mix of sound.
@MayorsOffice881 Thanks! :-D I'm doing my best. BTW, is that a Tom Goes to teh Mayor reference? Love that freakin' show!
Oracular spectacular is a damn fine album.Ive always believed mgmts first two albums to show their growth. Every song oracular at least on my first listen from start to finish every song seemed to increase the psychedelic aspect of each song as it reaches its end. I was also tripping balls on mushrooms. It was a good time. Congratulations os a masterpiece on shrooms this was easily one of the greatest hours of my 1000 plus hours in an altered reality. This album is truly an experience and its delicious candy to the ears.Flash, Eno, Breaks, Someones Missing, whistle, Congratulations, its working, and lady dada are my favorite songs from mgmt i just listed every song except dan and that ones great too. This album holds a special place in my heart i wont forget that first listen, the shit i saw, the things i felt, and the nonstop eargasms this album gave me.To me a perfect album means you can play it from start to finish and never have to skip a song.
Everything you said in this video is pretty spot on especially the time machine aspect i got a lot of old timers onto mgmt by just telling to check this album out cause its the closest thing to the beatles we will ever get.
I grew up with Congratulations. When this album came out, I was still forming my music taste , and discovering it was very defining. I never understood why reception were so mixed about this one.
OMG He just T-posed on us what a madlad
Thank You for doing what you do!
great review!
"It's like the band took a time machine, stole all the sounds from the 80's, and then went back to the 60's and the 70's to make the music of that time."
That's a great way of putting it!
Oracular Spectacular really holds a special place in my heart. I like Oracular Spectacular more than I do Congratulations. However, I love the direction the band is taking, furthering themselves away from the screaming teenage girls yelling at them to play Kids.
Yea. Brian Eno the song - one of that best tribute songs ever. When i first heard it i knew i had to keep goin with music (i really sucked then). Anywho!
I love the band. This review: it got nailed.
Why the black bg on this one?
Thank you! You had the exact approach to this album as I did.
I see what you're saying. Well, this thing is WAY more of a grower than a shower. Give it some time and see if you end up digging it more. But I think there are some pretty immediate songs on this thing, but I think the catchiest songs are @ the end w/congrats & brian eno.
Thank you melon. I’ll give this album a listen. Great comment 10/10
Absolutely loved this album from the moment I listened to it for the first time. Only album of any group that I love every song on it. Definitely shows their great musical talent. Love the sound so unique unlike anything I've ever heard before. My favorite MGMT album without a doubt.

i love congratulations and i love your reviews, you said everything that i thought about it and more thank you so much. But i think congratulations is great because it goes together so well, everysong while keeping it all different and unique. Oracular Spectacular was.. spectacular however, there was definately two halves to the album rather than one whole creative piece.
you had me at "fragile baby sensibilities"
@vwise5 I don't have a problem with "druggys." Do all the drugs you want. I don't care.
Both 'Oracular Spectacular' and 'Congratulations' are great in their own way. Each is a different experience, but both are very much worth the journey they take you on--as different as they may be. I think that's a testament to how talented these two guys are as song writers.
From the start of It's Working all the way to Congratulations, I just couldn't express my happiness.
I personally like the 60s Psychedelic Rock, because I didn't feel like there was enough on Oracular Spectacular, but Metanoia was a big indicator that this album would be promising.
overall, you enjoy it or you don't.
just because all your friends haven't said they like it, doesn't mean you can't decide for yourself.

This is one of my favourite albums of all time! I think it's just incredible start to finish. It's hands down in my top 10. I find it much better than their first album, because the first album was less consistent, it had great singles and some weaker songs in between. But THIS one is perfect start to finish. Really clean too. Love it.
