6 Speed Gearboxes are bullet proof, its the 5 speed in the Mini one & Cooper that are made of chocolate. Common issues with mini's are wishbone bushes, and heavy clutches. everything else is decent.
The face-lift had different headlights, rear lights, Teflon coated supercharger, some exhaust reworking and a shorter ratio gearbox for improved acceleration, and they had around 7bhp more than a prefacelift. 👍
Calvin that Mini is 100% tuned, has an aftermarket intercooler which usually means a smaller pulley! I had one with coilovers, LSD, big brakes and 212 WHP it was a rocket! Would have one again in a heartbeat!
The 's' in mini cooper s has nothing to do with the word supercharged. You were able to get classic mini cooper s' too. Bmw just saw this as an option to get more power out of the 1.6 and late changed it to a turbo on the r56
1st JCW mini's were 197bhp. 2nd versions were 210bhp. My mate had a tuned standard one remapped with a smaller pulley back in 2004 and made 215bhp, £1000 back then.
Finally , you have to get your hands on a jcw and do a review , Such a better car ! Also judging from the direnza intercooler it’s probably had a 17% supercharger belt pulley , The carbon dash is rare which is strange for a cooper s. The exhaust sounds way to raspy for a standard car so it’s probably got a decat or a decat manifold!
Just watched your take on your Mini Cooper S, to be very honest me darling, you didn’t need to say anything. Your fave was a picture, excellent review and very honest. Looking forward to your next vid. Now going to your website xx
The R53 will be a future classic. Unlike the more modern "MIDIs", the first gen of new MINIs still had the Mini-feel. Easily modified. Great fun. I still own mine (my first car). Will never sell it. Driven Porsche, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Corvettes... The R53 is still my favorite. - - - Is that an Omega Seamaster on his wrist?
a 57 plate will class as a R56 which are known for being problematic even with a forged engine however the power in the turbo of the S is impressive. I currently have a 2002 Cooper S (R53) and mine is a problematic mess but nothing major like R56s have, just overheating issues and old age issues. However your r56 will be fine if maintained correctly, as Mark says at 100k its a £1500 , you need to do servicing and repairs yourself when you own a S of any generation because otherwise you will be spending a lot of money in garages.
@@wullielove8680 It includes a lot, not to sure about yours... Probably best if you google mini service. You will find hundreds of cheap minis around for this reason.
I have owned a few new shape minis, the cooper are slow, cooper s, are okay I had a nice JCW with 220 bhp thst pulled well, one problem not mentioned the head gaskets can go, check the coolant resoovour for brown sludge or cream water in the oil
The 'S' on an R53 Mini Cooper S doesn't stand for Supercharger; it's a carry-over from the original 60s Mini Cooper which had the S for the even sportier model. By your logic, the newer R56 Mini Cooper S that came in 2006 or 2007 would be a Cooper T as it replaced the supercharger with a turbocharger!
I used to own an EP3 and an R53 Cooper S. As standard, the Cooper S couldn't keep up with the EP3. But after fitting a 15% reduced pulley and an airtec intercooler to it, it used to beat the EP3 easily (even used to pull on my friends s2000) so you'll probably find it's got a 15% reduced pulley on it. Or at least 12% reduced pulley as the standard intercooler can handle it. With the 15% it's highly recommended that you change the intercooler for a bigger aftermarket one (or a JCW). So if it's got a larger intercooler, it's probably got a 15% reduced pulley. (200bhp plus)
I was thinking too that it's had something done to it since when the ep3 was launched it was 6.6 to 60 and the Cooper s was in the mid 7s, so yeah makes sense and I much prefer the supercharged over the current cooper s, from memory the supercharged were the rover ones and bmw stuck with it before swapping to turbo
I own an 04 R53 Cooper S JCW, all original spec. One of the most fun car’s I’ve ever driven. When the super charger kicks in, it takes off. Factory Brakes are not really up to the job with that extra power and could do with up rating.
I would be interested in seeing what the corsa vxr vs cooper s on the draft time As I have a corsa vxr and my girlfriend as the cooper s. I have driven both and I think the vxr faster to 60.🤔
The 1.6 turbo cooper S is the same engine that’s in the Citroen DS3 Dsport and the Peugeot 207gti. I owned the DS3 and it was a good car, just french so it got a few faults you wouldn’t expect with a few year old car lol. The timing chain and carbon build up are common on this engine 100%.
You could say that about most hot hatches that age tho, I've owned an R53 cooper S and had no problems at all. Not the fastest thing but great fun to drive
I had a 2003 Cooper s for 2 years never cost me anything in repairs but I don’t think I hit above 26 mpg but I didn’t car only sold it cos I was doing 60-80 miles a day

The car in this video is a 2005. The gearbox issue was solved in the 2005-06 cars when they went from Midlands gearboxes to Getrag. The only 1st generation BMW MINIs to buy are 2005-06 with a manual transmission. (Frankly, those are the only MINIs worth buying; those are the classics; the new MINIs are ugly AF.)

Correct, the 5 speed Midland boxes that Rover insisted were used in the 1st generation One & Coopers were made of cheese.
