The Oklahoma City Thunder have once again landed steals out of the 2023 NBA draft after trading up for Kentucky guard Cason Wallace to select him 10th overall while also selecting Kansas State wing Keyontae Johnson in the 2nd round of the draft. Victor Wembanyama to the Spurs has been the talk of the draft but Sam Presti and the OKC Thunder front office are starting to complete their rebuild and are closing in on young pieces to support Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Josh Giddey, Chet Holmgren, Jalen Williams, Lu Dort and the rest of the Thunder’s young core. The Thunder’s offseason will be interesting as they could make trades and offseason signings but step one was landing Cason Wallace and Keyontae Johnson.
The OKC Thunder are the NBA’s next dynasty at least on paper. They made the play-in tournament last season and looks like just a few pieces away from being back to NBA championship contention. To acquire Cason Wallace, OKC traded Dereck Lively to Dallas and in return, the Thunder received Davis Bertans and his huge contract. Now it will be seen if OKC once again emerges as big winners of the draft with their selections. Next season, Chet Holmgren is coming back, Shai just became an all-star and Jdub was a rookie of the year contender. But in this video, we’ll break down the games of both Cason Wallace and Keyontae Williams and how they fit the OKC Thunder.

I like it a lot. And this tells me that presti must see sth in Poku/Ous wings already on the team in this off-season. So he is not worried about taking another smaller guard, instead of a 6’8-9 wings

I’m happy with Keyontae Johnson but at first glance I didn’t like the Cason Wallace pick. I would have much rather preffered a 3 and D wing or big man at that spot. In fairness there was no big men at that spot that fit our needs. So It wasn’t a terrible pick. For example I would’ve loved if Jarace Walker or Taylor Hendricks fell to us but I think Presti did the best he can out of the players available. I think Cason Wallace fits perfectly in the roster and he can contribute right on.

Really like how Cason and Lu Dort play tough, physical, yet, clean defense. Both Cason's and Keyontae's passing (which I'm sure Presti noticed) is gonna be key to this OKC offense. Gonna be great!

Great video! Keyontae Johnson has so many accolades..He was named 2019-20 All SEC 1st team. This yr was All Big 12 1st team unanimous selection. 2nd in Big 12 in scoring. Named Big 12 Newcomer of Yr & Transfer Portal Player of Yr.. NBA DraftRoom named him one of 10 Best Wing Defenders in Draft. Has a 7'0 WingSpan! Amazing he slipped to us in 2nd rd
Thanks man Keyontae is a complete player to be honest. Athletic guy with good size, shooting touch, and defense. Crazy how he fell that far down because of his previous condition
Some people have been saying Dort and Cason won’t be on the floor at the same time… but I think that would be miserable… for the other guards. A lineup of Dort, Cason, JDub, Kenrich and Chet would be a nightmare for other teams. The benefit is that Cason allows Josh and Shai to have more rest as they won’t have to defend the other teams best guard. Keonte is an insane pickup as well, and it’s dope that he played at Florida with Tre. Summer league can’t get here fast enough! Chet’s return is gonna be so exciting!

We dont know about Cason but Dort can score quick, he can get 16 in 7 minutes.

But its the summer league and its silly to put too much stock into a players abilities in the reg season based on the summer league.
At best we can really just see what skills would probably translate......... ive seen A LOT of players have amazing summer leagues and then are out of the league before their rookie contract is up.

Sorry to break it down to you but OKC has two 7-footers on the roster and 4 guys at 6 foot 10. They are big and they don’t have too many guards

As an OKC fan since 2008, I am not happy with this pick….. idk if we needed a guard, we have insane potential in guards, I believe that small forward or power foward that could develop in the long run was better. Chet is big but not a big body which mean we need weight on the pain. 😅not a fan of the pick but a fan of the player. 😅
Exactly, these are great players, but if frontcourt depth isn't addressed soon, we will continued to get beat up by other teams bigs.
Well, as an OKC fan since our inception as well, i will say....... i trust Presti's drafting abilities and both of these players look good. Im really excited for Cason.
As for OPs comment. We drafted 2 3/4s last draft, remember? Both proved themselves and both will have improved.
Not to mention we picked up an exp vet 3/4 in Bertans in the 12 for 10 pick trade.
We wanted to go with guards because we are cutting one or two and maybe adding one or two to a trade. Even if not, we have to prepare fornot being able to afford Wiggins and Dort when they resign. Dort might actually be the best two way guard in the NBA if hes given a larger offensive role on another team and i think he and everyone else knows that.
And lastly, big bodies, chet, etc..... we dont need a big guy. Chet is fine for now. I dont know if people realize this but theres only like 3 big muscular low post go to work centers left in the NBA. If we find that we need another Adams, we will sign one cheap in FA because they are not heavily desired and dont get minutes.

He does not fit our style, hes very limited offensively, not there defensively and he would take up cap and will cost an unreasonable amount to resign if we kept him...... like...... you have to pay attention to what were building here. You cant just toss names out because they can produce and call it a day.
The only big i feel we should go after and it would have to be now be ause im not sure if wed be able to resign him is Lauri Markkanin

Hoarding good young players allows you to eventually package them with say a Bertrans or Dort contract to acquire a superstar or whoever via trade.

Okay, but how are they gonna develop these young players? How much more do they gonna draft? They gonna be fighting for minutes rather than championships. I think it's time for them to constantly compete to get them experience, shai is 24, how many years they gonna waste just to draft.
Really Who knows man. What if OKC makes the playoffs next season? I guess we'll just have to wait and see without pre-empting anything. After all, the team were just one win away from making the playoffs a few months ago
@@riroballs That's what i want them to make the playoffs, right now i don't think they can go past 1st round, i think their backcourt is set, but they need some big bodies at the front, let's be real chet and poku will get tossed around in the paint, they are skilled and tall, but in the playoffs it doesn't matter, much more physical. That's why i want them to be in the playoffs, to learn what does it take only to just compete at that level, same thing with the magic, although they got skilled big bodies, they lack shot creation big time.
I guess we'll see once it's playoff time. I think we'll hold up just fine with our frontcourt but I respect your take

I had jarace at 5 and cason at 8.
I value 3&D way players way more than others.

This season’s line ups are anyone’s guess. Daigneault is going to have a tough time getting minutes for everyone who deserves them. The roster is deep and fairly even, talent-wise. Who’s your fifth starter? Who’s on your second team?
1st - Giddey, Shai, Dort, Kenrich, Chet
2nd - choose from Wallace, Joe, J Dub, Wiggins, Keyontae, Dieng, J Will, Poku, Tre and JRE. Who do you leave out? Those last three names might get left behind.
I definitely believe it’s firmly gonna be Shai, Josh, Jdub, Dort and Chet as the starting lineup. That’s just my opinion. Really interesting situation though with the bench
