Many times, there is an empty wagon between locomotive and oil tankers as a protective measure.

Here in North America, tank cars are now equipped with double - shelf couplers which reduces the likelihood of the cars becoming uncoupled in a derailment.

      Only the insulated/pressurized types.

Double shelf couplers are required on any tank car transporting hazardous materials- they were initially required in the mid-1970s to reduce coupler bypasses/over-rides during switching operations which resulted in a coupler puncturing the head of a tank car. There are three main types of tank cars: non-pressure (a/k/a general service), pressure and cryogenic. “Pressurized” is misleading and not a regulatory term.

So those hairpin things that used to stick out the top of the domes at the terminals are thermometers. I never knew that. Nice drawings btw. So much detail presented with such a consise explanation. In some states and countries fuel is no longer transported in this fashion. But it is still kind of hard to know how much petrol at each depot in the country requires when there are so many towns to supply from one centralised depot in the city. So the depot contacts the fuel refinery and they contact the railways to tell them which town it is to be sent I take it. This is complicated further in the marshalling yards with so many different brands of petrol. The large logos help out but still. Hard to know what tanker goes where and it is also mandatory to know an NTAF from an NTBF bitumen tank wagon as these country fuel depots distribute bitumen in many cases as well or they are sent to a government road maintenence depot with its own bitumen handling facilities.

Nice 👍. Just like oil tanker can you give the knowledge for other freight cars too... I think this also plays an important role in huge logistics sector. Therefore other freight cars explanation are required too in order to understand how it works...

In North America, these rail cars are “tank cars” - “tankers” are boats.

What structure carries the drawbar load of of the train between the cars couplers - it's thousands of tons? Is it the tank itself?

What if a tank car is emptied in Denver at 5280 feet and then taken to The West Coast at sea level. What would keep the tank from imploding?
