I think it’s no coincidence at all that this video was in my suggestions. I literally just had a mental breakdown on Monday explaining to my boyfriend that I love being a nurse and helping my patients but the burn out IS REAL! I’ve been a nurse for 3-4 months on a medical surgical unit and immediately I’ve known that bedside nursing isn’t for me. Don’t get me wrong, I love nursing and I knew it wouldn’t be an easy job but the burn out is literally not worth the mental /physical/verbal abuse. I absolutely agree with the staffing situation, I work in south Florida and we are ALWAYS understaffed. The understaffing is both dangerous to the patient and me. I don’t complain much but I know once I finish out my year and gain mor experience I will definitely Seek other opportunities with my nursing degree. Thank you so much for the transparency. Hi Jahnaya! I just moved to North Dakota but doing my pre reqs online in Miami. What hospital do you work at? I hear it’s understaffed but some nurses are getting 1k extra for extra shift atleast that’s the case at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Dominique I am glad you addressed the struggles of nursing in this video. I feel like I have preached this for years and people don't really understand it until they are actually working at the bedside. I love bedside and I love my job but I also worked very hard for my license and I cannot imagine ever losing it due to being unsafe, understaffed and etc. I even have nurses who worked on the floor for 50 years and have said nursing is not the same that it use to be. I always knew nursing would be challenging but I had no problem with that but when I experienced the mental physical and emotional toll of this career I got myself in FNP school quick and in a hurry .

I started in a hospital, med surg floor. Was told by other nurses/peers that’s where I needed to start. I hated it and was close to leaving nursing all together. I then found a position in hospice and I’ve never been happier. I love my job. Don’t give up on finding your place in the nursing world.
I'm currently in nursing school and work as a nurse tech on a medsurg floor. I really want to do hospice. I've been a caregiver to family members on hospice. Hospice has a very soft spot in my heart. What is your role if you don't mind me asking. Are you a case mgr, admissions nurse? I'm volunteering for a hospice agency (companionship visits), but it doesn't expose me to the nursing side. Understaffing is a huge issue and really does take a toll on our mental and physical well-being. I wish NY had Cali's staffing ratio cap because it is absolutely ridiculous.
New nurse here and I just left the hospital after 5 months and went into hospice. It it completely different and I love it. Less patients, more time, and less stress.
I’m a newer RN and I went straight into CVICU and I just left about 3 months. I truly believe bedside just isn’t for me anymore and I think it’s because I was a CNA for 8 years and even tho I’m a nurse bedside is still beside. I left and I’m going back to dialysis!! I was a dialysis tech for almost 2 years and loved it so I definitely feel like a weight has been lifted off of me and this was the best choice for me and my mental health! Do whatever makes YOU happy !!! You worked so hard for this degree so doing what makes you happy and healthy is what is most important ♥️
Over a two year ICU nurse here and I’m 23 as well, and i could not agree with everything you said more! I’m here 2 years later and nothing is more disappointing and frustrating than doing the same job as someone else if not working harder than others and still making not nearly as much as they do. Like you said at 23 years old I’m doing more than fine for myself, but it would be nice to be compensated for all the hard work we put in as full time staff who have stayed during all the short staffing, Covid outbreak waves, etc. Best advice I was ever given was do what’s best for you because the system won’t! Keep going and find you niche and place that makes it worth your while girl!
I completely understand you! I am 8 months in on a pediatric step down floor and I am trying to make it to a year. But honestly, I am looking into outpatient. There have been too many times where I break down before work bc I’m anxious about staffing or the acuity of the patients. It will work out for the best though! Good luck to you! Girl! I just finished my first week in a Endoscopy Clinic apart of a major hospital. I’m so glad I did it. Prep and PACU right now, it’s fast paced and quite a learning curve from the floor with the charting but bedside wasn’t for me starting out. The patients are so appreciative of the nurses, it’s objective, and very little of the mindless running around for call bells. Downsides are we rarely give meds beside fluids so med knowledge may go down and weekday/ day shift pay only besides call. It’s all related to GI, so there isn’t a variety of multiple body systems but I think it’s great.
I’m glad you posted this . Before I was accepted into nursing school I just knew I wanted to work in the Er. Now I work in the ER in registration while in nursing school and I’ve definitely changed my mind . The foolishness that comes through the ER is insaneee .
It's a problem everywhere! I have been an LPN less than a year and I left bedside 2 weeks ago. I went to a methadone/rehab clinic. So much better on my mental and my back! I work prn at my old facility. After working 20 hours bc I had no relief I decided bedside was not for me! Management will definitely guilt trip you into working extra shifts and they are nurses and they won't dare work those shifts. I didn't see your video as negativ. I'm glad you are keeping things real and honest with us!

I’m so glad you posted this video and how candid you are! I just started in the ED as a new grad too. I can definitely see it already that I’m about to get burnt out so quick. I’m barely two months into being a nurse and this is my second switch on specialties and it’s not it either. I definitely agree that bedside is not it. I’m so glad this was in my feed, I was going to school to be a registered nurse but I hear so much about being burned out and how it’s draining, I’m switching my major to surgical tech for now, maybe in the future I might go back to get my nursing degree but for now I know this is best.
I graduate in December and I’m already feeling the burnout. Just from doing my preceptorship on a medsurg floor and I’m like 😳 nurses are sooooo overworked & understaffed! I hate it has gotten like this. Even the seasoned nurses say it’s NEVER been this bad. Just having the right amount of staff would make allll the difference. I hate so many are leaving are leaving bedside b/c I can see it’s potential but I definitely get it! Prayers on your journey and good luck in school!💓
It’s worse here in Dublin, Ireland. I look after 12 patients during nightshift in an acute medical-surgical ward! That’s the regular Nurse Patient ratio here No LPN or UAP. Only a healthcare assistant that doesn’t do vital signs even, only for hygiene needs. I get paid €22 ($21) per hour with 10 years of bedside experience. The salary can’t be negotiated. There’s a standardised scale for all HSE Public Nurses. Imagine the rate of a newly grad (Around $16). A lot of us are quitting and moving to Australia. Can’t get a mortgage here at all if you’re a single person. As for me, I’m sitting the Nclex very soon this year. So goodluck to me 🙏

When I interviewed for the ER they told me I the lower acuity areas you will get 10-12 patients. They were up front about it which I appreciated but hell no.

This was so real! I loved how you articulated your feelings because many nurses feel the same way! I wish I could say I am surprised but I am not one bit. I am a LPN and got a job outside of bedside because I couldn’t do it anymore! I graduate in December with my RN and I don’t really know what route I want to take. I listen to all the nurses on the floor and they are so miserable. I wish there was a solution to all of this😢.
I’ve been at bedside for 20 years and honestly, it’s has not changed. 12 years traveling, ICU, TRAUMA, CVICU, Neuro ICU, SICU, IR, & MICU, getting worse and patients sicker, less training for staff. Except for lower pay, 10 times for the abuse from patients, families, and the health care industry. I’ve also been teaching for 12 years, and I feel sorry for the new grads because babies teaching babies. Things to remember 1-YOU are replaceable, 2-Call security & don’t get involved, 3- Call credentialing agencies and report safety issue, 4-Follow hospital policy on reporting safety concerns…Not documented , Nit done!! This is what pisses me off more than anything, everyone complaining, no one taking action. If you guys think it’s bad now wait, it’s going to get worse! These factors break my heart every day and can’t imagine how new grads going to survive 😢. I left 3 months ago and not working in healthcare at all now. This article shows the future
You are my motivation! I found your channel towards the end of nursing school and to see you now at 6 months really pushes me. I’m winding down my first semester of pre reqs for pre nursing. I’m interested in the ER as well as L&D.
They won’t increase pay until we all stop going in extra for guilt… corporations know that 2-3 times a year new grads are coming out. So they offer jobs, guaranteed hours and sign on bonuses .. don’t do it.

New grad RN here👋🏾 I started at a local dialysis clinic in Kansas City (not one of the major ones) and so far, so good. I’d like to eventually venture into the world of acute dialysis but that’s as close to bedside nursing that I’ll ever get. I would like to eventually travel as a dialysis RN.
100% agree. They are slowly making that a reality here in RI. They are starting to put more LPNs back into the hospitals, but they are starting off slow. So, they hire LPNS, but not as many as RNs. As far as CNAs, they already had multiple positions in the hospitals here.
Dom thank you so much. I just left my ER nurse position after 6 months because of the short staffing and mental burnout and honestly, risk to my license. The mental toll it took really made me leave. Thank you for talking about this and not sugar coating anything. I struggled feeling like a failure big time but as always you keep it real and really make nurses like me feel heard and seen. 💕
May I ask what your next job is? I was working on a medical floor as a new grad and I turned in my resignation letter this week. I was so mentally unhealthy I wanted to take my own life multiple times on the floor. But now that I quit I don’t know what to do now
@@maxpeng8715 as a fellow nurse with 20 years of experience my heart breaks reading this! My love no job should ever make you feel this way! I suggest you try hospice or home health. One patient at a time and you control your schedule. When you get hungry or need to run to Walmart there is no penalty. Give it a look and see if it good fit. Blessings pumpkin!!!!

I’m at my one year on a medsurg unit. I’m over it. I can’t pee, eat, etc when I want to. The mental/emotional stress is too much. I’ve been so depressed and anxious this past year alone. I thought when i started nursing that i would’ve been going to work often to pickup shifts to pay off my student loans but i can only do my 3 shifts and that’s it. The patient load is too much, they are extremely sick
Yes & yes! I never planned on doing bedside for a long period of time as I’m continuing my schooling. I do plan on travel nursing in the meantime. I am also open to changing specialties!
What’s the average starting pay for Nursing? I personally give nurses their prompts because I couldn’t do it! I will stick with my technologist careers. At least us technologist work independently for the most part, we just need certification/registration/license which means less schooling and can start off making $20-$40/hr depending on what kind of technologist are you. I tell everyone join the Imaging department doing X-ray, CT, MRI, etc and you won’t be disappointed!!! Starting pay can be as high as $30-$40 base pay so do night shift weekends and you can see as high as $35-$50/ hr as a new graduate!
Back in the day...like the 1800 I could see why nurses got paid based on experience. But now, everyone gets taught the same program, they take the same nclex so the pay should be within the same range.
When I worked in cardio and surgery, we regularly had 10-12 patients EACH and it was just 2-3 of us at a time; and the pay was subpar. Currently looking for non clinical opportunities because bedside was my entire life and the staff I had recently gave mean girls vibes smh! 😅

I'm in nursing school and based off what I've seen as an EMT and in clinical and from other nurses... I'm already planning to move closer to the west coast to live and/or at least work in California. I got in this game to help people but I'm not going to kill myself over it. Can't help people if you kill yourself or lose your license.

Thank you! & very to little to none. We don’t have toothbrushes or anything like that in the ER. The rooms don’t have showers or toilets. If a patient needs to toilet we walk them to the public restroom. Patients usually wait to go to a room to shower and brush their teeth. However, of course if a patient can’t ambulate we have to clean them in bed and change chucks.
Lovely video. I graduated in the same college as you, go panthers! I graduated in may 2021. Started in cardiac step down unit as new grad on nights and it’s been almost a year since I’ve been a nurse. The burnout is real and bedside can be stressful. The great thing about my floor/hospital is we have great ratios of 3-5 pts max! I recently went part-time, working 2 days/week and let me tell you it makes a difference if you value a quality of life and helps decrease the burnout. The great thing about nursing is the flexibility in schedule and where you can go in terms of specialty. Do what works for you, the hospital needs you, not the other way around. You worked hard for that degree so do what works for you.
As a little girl I've always wanted to be a nurse, my mother was a CNA for 20 years and highly encouraged me to do so as well. I became a CNA for an agency and worked in many nursing homes, and prayed for the day I could get a job In a hospital. That day finally came, I was so excited and wanted to give my all picking up as many shifts as my body would let me just for my Manager to give me shit for the little things such as not getting a patients water quick enough, telling me to LIE when my shift clock asked me if I got me an UNINTERRUPTED 30-minute break, and many more. When I first started there were supposed to be 4 CNAS on a floor (Which there never were) then a few months later they maxed it out to 3! but there were only ever 2 and many days there were only one. I worked in med surg but this happens on every floor. I counted down the days till I quit. As for abuse I already knew the abuse healthcare workers experience from working at a nursing home, Its not different in a hospital. Since then I only work home health It's me with one patient. I am currently in nursing school and I have NO plans of working in a hospital. I would rather work in a nursing home where I become close with the residents, home health where its just me and one patient or I go from house to house or my main choice of a clinic, But Many people who work in a clinic love it so much so its not many positions unless you speak a different language. My instructor says we aren't going to see a change in health care until we elect someone who has worked in direct patient health care.

I got so burned out as a nurse 4 years ago. I was bullied by my preceptor who was harassing but i just wanted to make it. I needed to make this happen. I pushed through and years later learned you are nothing but a warm body. I have been so burned out even through covid. Nurses are abused and used and at times treated like servants. You can be understaffed and unsafe but you need to smile while your patients yell for you to go running for a blanket. Go running for doctors, go running for admin and go running for families. Yet get called lazy by every none nursing staff in the building. If you want to be a nurse understand that you need to draw your boundaries and stick to them. Do your hours and CLOCK OUT.
My roommate and I have been externs for almost a year now and we're already talking about burnout which is absolutely absurd. I haven't even officially become a nurse yet and I'm already exhausted?? It blows my mind. I pray that L&D will make me happy as I anticipate but I've come to terms with the idea that bedside isn't the end all be all for me. I have worked beside as a CNA for 12 years and I left due to staffing issues. Oh the stories I could tell about my wild ride. I absolutely have PTSD from it. I'll be graduating as an RN in a few months and I want the bedside experience as a nurse so I can be a travel RN too, but I am not sure if this is the best option for my mental health. Did you work in this department prior to being a nurse there? Did staffing get worse or do you feel like you didn't really notice it before? Just curious. Bedside is a whole other beast! I was a nursing student myself & I dropped out - - I felt burned out just within my clinicals during nursing school; & I took that as a sign that I would feel that way as a nurse as well! && talking to some of my former nursing school classmates, majority of them wish they would’ve went to school for something other than nursing - - but I guess ppl see the scrubs & think the job is going to be “cute”, but burnout is REAL! Thank you for being honest! I agree with the physical toll on our bodies. I work in the ER too and the amount of work we do does not correlate with the pay. There was a shift where I didn’t sit for 6 hours and my legs were in so much pain. All states should have mandated nurse to patient ratios. After one year I am considering travel nursing or going back to pursue a provider role.
I agree with everything that you said! I am 7 months in and everything is accurate. We have been so short staffed it’s ridiculous! My intentions are to finish my nurse residency and go travel. We go through so much and I feel burnt out as well. I am not doing bedside for the rest of my life either or working staff waiting for a pension. I have a bedside ditch plan for sure. Investing in myself!!! ❤️ you are right! You do not have to pick up hours just because they ask. I need to make my UA-cam video explaining it as well. I just happened to come across it when I was working. I am a critical care stepdown nurse so we get many ED patients that are still not stable. I feel you when you said that you were burned out at only 6 months. That was me also. I even ended going part time. Almost a year in doing part time and still feeling the burn out. Sometimes it doesn't matter what you do, bedside is just exhausting. I wanted to stay for 2 years minimal but that's not going to happen. I am looking for jobs away from the bedside right now as we speak.
At this point I don't think any nurse will cope on any bedside unit simply die to the understaffing. But thank Goodness there's outpt clinics and other settings with less burdens e.g psych, maternity, operating rooms and also case management

I have been contemplating what I want to do next. Im doing LTC right now and honestly it’s so slow and I hate the repetitive motions. I feel like I need fast paced or faster than what I’m doing now lol. It’s a toss up between ER and med surg. I know you get a lot of experience with ER which is what I’m looking for but I don’t want to be in the way.

I’m a newer RN and I went straight into CVICU and I just left about 3 months. I truly believe bedside just isn’t for me anymore and I think it’s because I was a CNA for 8 years and even tho I’m a nurse bedside is still beside. I left and I’m going back to dialysis!! I was a dialysis tech for almost 2 years and loved it so I definitely feel like a weight has been lifted off of me and this was the best choice for me and my mental health! Do whatever makes YOU happy !!! You worked so hard for this degree so doing what makes you happy and healthy is what is most important ♥️

Over a two year ICU nurse here and I’m 23 as well, and i could not agree with everything you said more! I’m here 2 years later and nothing is more disappointing and frustrating than doing the same job as someone else if not working harder than others and still making not nearly as much as they do. Like you said at 23 years old I’m doing more than fine for myself, but it would be nice to be compensated for all the hard work we put in as full time staff who have stayed during all the short staffing, Covid outbreak waves, etc. Best advice I was ever given was do what’s best for you because the system won’t! Keep going and find you niche and place that makes it worth your while girl!
I completely understand you! I am 8 months in on a pediatric step down floor and I am trying to make it to a year. But honestly, I am looking into outpatient. There have been too many times where I break down before work bc I’m anxious about staffing or the acuity of the patients.

Girl! I just finished my first week in a Endoscopy Clinic apart of a major hospital. I’m so glad I did it. Prep and PACU right now, it’s fast paced and quite a learning curve from the floor with the charting but bedside wasn’t for me starting out. The patients are so appreciative of the nurses, it’s objective, and very little of the mindless running around for call bells. Downsides are we rarely give meds beside fluids so med knowledge may go down and weekday/ day shift pay only besides call. It’s all related to GI, so there isn’t a variety of multiple body systems but I think it’s great.
I’m glad you posted this . Before I was accepted into nursing school I just knew I wanted to work in the Er. Now I work in the ER in registration while in nursing school and I’ve definitely changed my mind . The foolishness that comes through the ER is insaneee .
It's a problem everywhere! I have been an LPN less than a year and I left bedside 2 weeks ago. I went to a methadone/rehab clinic. So much better on my mental and my back! I work prn at my old facility. After working 20 hours bc I had no relief I decided bedside was not for me! Management will definitely guilt trip you into working extra shifts and they are nurses and they won't dare work those shifts. I didn't see your video as negativ. I'm glad you are keeping things real and honest with us!

I’m so glad this was in my feed, I was going to school to be a registered nurse but I hear so much about being burned out and how it’s draining, I’m switching my major to surgical tech for now, maybe in the future I might go back to get my nursing degree but for now I know this is best.
I graduate in December and I’m already feeling the burnout. Just from doing my preceptorship on a medsurg floor and I’m like 😳 nurses are sooooo overworked & understaffed! I hate it has gotten like this. Even the seasoned nurses say it’s NEVER been this bad. Just having the right amount of staff would make allll the difference. I hate so many are leaving are leaving bedside b/c I can see it’s potential but I definitely get it! Prayers on your journey and good luck in school!💓
It’s worse here in Dublin, Ireland. I look after 12 patients during nightshift in an acute medical-surgical ward! That’s the regular Nurse Patient ratio here No LPN or UAP. Only a healthcare assistant that doesn’t do vital signs even, only for hygiene needs. I get paid €22 ($21) per hour with 10 years of bedside experience. The salary can’t be negotiated. There’s a standardised scale for all HSE Public Nurses. Imagine the rate of a newly grad (Around $16). A lot of us are quitting and moving to Australia. Can’t get a mortgage here at all if you’re a single person. As for me, I’m sitting the Nclex very soon this year. So goodluck to me 🙏

When I interviewed for the ER they told me I the lower acuity areas you will get 10-12 patients. They were up front about it which I appreciated but hell no.

This was so real! I loved how you articulated your feelings because many nurses feel the same way! I wish I could say I am surprised but I am not one bit. I am a LPN and got a job outside of bedside because I couldn’t do it anymore! I graduate in December with my RN and I don’t really know what route I want to take. I listen to all the nurses on the floor and they are so miserable. I wish there was a solution to all of this😢.

I’ve been at bedside for 20 years and honestly, it’s has not changed. 12 years traveling, ICU, TRAUMA, CVICU, Neuro ICU, SICU, IR, & MICU, getting worse and patients sicker, less training for staff. Except for lower pay, 10 times for the abuse from patients, families, and the health care industry. I’ve also been teaching for 12 years, and I feel sorry for the new grads because babies teaching babies. Things to remember 1-YOU are replaceable, 2-Call security & don’t get involved, 3- Call credentialing agencies and report safety issue, 4-Follow hospital policy on reporting safety concerns…Not documented , Nit done!! This is what pisses me off more than anything, everyone complaining, no one taking action. If you guys think it’s bad now wait, it’s going to get worse! These factors break my heart every day and can’t imagine how new grads going to survive 😢. I left 3 months ago and not working in healthcare at all now. This article shows the future

New grad RN here👋🏾 I started at a local dialysis clinic in Kansas City (not one of the major ones) and so far, so good. I’d like to eventually venture into the world of acute dialysis but that’s as close to bedside nursing that I’ll ever get. I would like to eventually travel as a dialysis RN.

100% agree. They are slowly making that a reality here in RI. They are starting to put more LPNs back into the hospitals, but they are starting off slow. So, they hire LPNS, but not as many as RNs. As far as CNAs, they already had multiple positions in the hospitals here.
Dom thank you so much. I just left my ER nurse position after 6 months because of the short staffing and mental burnout and honestly, risk to my license. The mental toll it took really made me leave. Thank you for talking about this and not sugar coating anything. I struggled feeling like a failure big time but as always you keep it real and really make nurses like me feel heard and seen. 💕

May I ask what your next job is? I was working on a medical floor as a new grad and I turned in my resignation letter this week. I was so mentally unhealthy I wanted to take my own life multiple times on the floor. But now that I quit I don’t know what to do now

One patient at a time and you control your schedule. When you get hungry or need to run to Walmart there is no penalty. Give it a look and see if it good fit. Blessings pumpkin!!!!

I’m at my one year on a medsurg unit. I’m over it. I can’t pee, eat, etc when I want to. The mental/emotional stress is too much. I’ve been so depressed and anxious this past year alone. I thought when i started nursing that i would’ve been going to work often to pickup shifts to pay off my student loans but i can only do my 3 shifts and that’s it. The patient load is too much, they are extremely sick

Yes & yes! I never planned on doing bedside for a long period of time as I’m continuing my schooling. I do plan on travel nursing in the meantime. I am also open to changing specialties!

What’s the average starting pay for Nursing? I personally give nurses their prompts because I couldn’t do it! I will stick with my technologist careers. At least us technologist work independently for the most part, we just need certification/registration/license which means less schooling and can start off making $20-$40/hr depending on what kind of technologist are you. I tell everyone join the Imaging department doing X-ray, CT, MRI, etc and you won’t be disappointed!!! Starting pay can be as high as $30-$40 base pay so do night shift weekends and you can see as high as $35-$50/ hr as a new graduate!
Maybe if u switched hospitals..? my friend felt the same but she got into a better hospital and doesn’t feel like this anymore.

Back in the day...like the 1800 I could see why nurses got paid based on experience. But now, everyone gets taught the same program, they take the same nclex so the pay should be within the same range.
When I worked in cardio and surgery, we regularly had 10-12 patients EACH and it was just 2-3 of us at a time; and the pay was subpar. Currently looking for non clinical opportunities because bedside was my entire life and the staff I had recently gave mean girls vibes smh! 😅

Thank you! & very to little to none. We don’t have toothbrushes or anything like that in the ER. The rooms don’t have showers or toilets. If a patient needs to toilet we walk them to the public restroom. Patients usually wait to go to a room to shower and brush their teeth. However, of course if a patient can’t ambulate we have to clean them in bed and change chucks.
Lovely video. I graduated in the same college as you, go panthers! I graduated in may 2021. Started in cardiac step down unit as new grad on nights and it’s been almost a year since I’ve been a nurse. The burnout is real and bedside can be stressful. The great thing about my floor/hospital is we have great ratios of 3-5 pts max! I recently went part-time, working 2 days/week and let me tell you it makes a difference if you value a quality of life and helps decrease the burnout. The great thing about nursing is the flexibility in schedule and where you can go in terms of specialty. Do what works for you, the hospital needs you, not the other way around. You worked hard for that degree so do what works for you.

As a little girl I've always wanted to be a nurse, my mother was a CNA for 20 years and highly encouraged me to do so as well. I became a CNA for an agency and worked in many nursing homes, and prayed for the day I could get a job In a hospital. That day finally came, I was so excited and wanted to give my all picking up as many shifts as my body would let me just for my Manager to give me shit for the little things such as not getting a patients water quick enough, telling me to LIE when my shift clock asked me if I got me an UNINTERRUPTED 30-minute break, and many more. When I first started there were supposed to be 4 CNAS on a floor (Which there never were) then a few months later they maxed it out to 3! but there were only ever 2 and many days there were only one. I worked in med surg but this happens on every floor. I counted down the days till I quit. As for abuse I already knew the abuse healthcare workers experience from working at a nursing home, Its not different in a hospital. Since then I only work home health It's me with one patient. I am currently in nursing school and I have NO plans of working in a hospital. I would rather work in a nursing home where I become close with the residents, home health where its just me and one patient or I go from house to house or my main choice of a clinic, But Many people who work in a clinic love it so much so its not many positions unless you speak a different language. My instructor says we aren't going to see a change in health care until we elect someone who has worked in direct patient health care.

I got so burned out as a nurse 4 years ago. I was bullied by my preceptor who was harassing but i just wanted to make it. I needed to make this happen. I pushed through and years later learned you are nothing but a warm body. I have been so burned out even through covid. Nurses are abused and used and at times treated like servants. You can be understaffed and unsafe but you need to smile while your patients yell for you to go running for a blanket. Go running for doctors, go running for admin and go running for families. Yet get called lazy by every none nursing staff in the building. If you want to be a nurse understand that you need to draw your boundaries and stick to them. Do your hours and CLOCK OUT.

My roommate and I have been externs for almost a year now and we're already talking about burnout which is absolutely absurd. I haven't even officially become a nurse yet and I'm already exhausted?? It blows my mind. I pray that L&D will make me happy as I anticipate but I've come to terms with the idea that bedside isn't the end all be all for me. Def will be looking into outpatient nursing jobs like Fertility, Derm, Aesthetics or somethinggg...idk, but I'm so happy you shared your truth and kept it real. I have worked beside as a CNA for 12 years and I left due to staffing issues. Oh the stories I could tell about my wild ride. I absolutely have PTSD from it. I'll be graduating as an RN in a few months and I want the bedside experience as a nurse so I can be a travel RN too, but I am not sure if this is the best option for my mental health. Did you work in this department prior to being a nurse there? Did staffing get worse or do you feel like you didn't really notice it before? Just curious. Bedside is a whole other beast! I was a nursing student myself & I dropped out - - I felt burned out just within my clinicals during nursing school; & I took that as a sign that I would feel that way as a nurse as well! && talking to some of my former nursing school classmates, majority of them wish they would’ve went to school for something other than nursing - - but I guess ppl see the scrubs & think the job is going to be “cute”, but burnout is REAL! Thank you for being honest! I agree with the physical toll on our bodies. I work in the ER too and the amount of work we do does not correlate with the pay. There was a shift where I didn’t sit for 6 hours and my legs were in so much pain. All states should have mandated nurse to patient ratios. After one year I am considering travel nursing or going back to pursue a provider role.
Agreed! I plan on doing both. Traveling for a year or two & definitely going back to school to become a provider.

I agree with everything that you said! I am 7 months in and everything is accurate. We have been so short staffed it’s ridiculous! My intentions are to finish my nurse residency and go travel. We go through so much and I feel burnt out as well. I am not doing bedside for the rest of my life either or working staff waiting for a pension. I have a bedside ditch plan for sure. Investing in myself!!! ❤️ you are right! You do not have to pick up hours just because they ask. I need to make my UA-cam video explaining it as well. I just happened to come across it when I was working. I am a critical care stepdown nurse so we get many ED patients that are still not stable. Definitely have experienced the rude patients, the laying on the call lights, totals and a bunch of other things so I truly understand.

I feel you when you said that you were burned out at only 6 months. That was me also. I even ended going part time. Almost a year in doing part time and still feeling the burn out. Sometimes it doesn't matter what you do, bedside is just exhausting. I wanted to stay for 2 years minimal but that's not going to happen. I am looking for jobs away from the bedside right now as we speak.

At this point I don't think any nurse will cope on any bedside unit simply die to the understaffing. But thank Goodness there's outpt clinics and other settings with less burdens e.g psych, maternity, operating rooms and also case management
